Synopsis:

Archangel Uriel is hell bent on revenge on the demon prince Vladek. To get into the prince’s impenetrable fortress, he’ll have to fight in the pits of the underworld. And he’ll need the help of the last person he can trust––the demon witch Nadya.

There is no way Nadya, who spends her days taking care of others, expected to find Uriel on her doorstep. He seems no happier about being there than she does. But helping him means evening the scales against her backstabbing sister, and she’ll do whatever it takes to make that bitch pay.

Using the fight pit circuits in the demon underworld, Nadya helps Uriel combat his way to the arena at the castle in Russia. Only she isn’t what she seems. As a matter of fact, she may hold the key to his redemption…and to his heart.

Excerpt:

Nadya

Oh, God.

My heart plummeted into my stomach, ice bleeding into my veins. It couldn’t be him. I blinked hard, willing the frightening vision to go away. But it didn’t. Quite the opposite, he drew farther into the semicircle of light spilling from my doorway. Dressed in full black, the striking contrast against his skin and hair and wings punched me in the gut. The firelight gilded his white wings gold, shining on the blond hair falling past his shoulders, dipping over the sharp, beautiful angles of his face, and hardening the lines to terrifying perfection. But his eyes. Christ, his eyes. Two pools of cold blue that had always reminded me of Arctic waters. Deep, dark, and absolutely deadly. The last time I’d looked into them, they were hazed with pain, fury, and for the briefest of seconds, gratitude. I’d tried to rid myself of that memory, but it haunted my dreams anyway. He haunted them.

I saw none of that in his eyes now. No. The archangel standing in front of me was a lethal warrior, wearing revenge like a cloak. And I knew better than any what he sought revenge for. I could all but feel restrained fury eking out of his pores, seeping into the air, creating a shield of stand-the-hell-back around him. Even when I last saw him as a captive, helpless in chains, the power of this archangel rippled off of him, lapping off of me in electrifying waves. It had stunned me stupid then, just as it did now. He was power personified.

“May we come in?” asked Anya softly.

Standing there in a stupor for a few more seconds, I finally blinked several times and opened the door wider.

“Of course.”

Anya entered, keeping her wings tight against her back. Dommiel followed, his boots echoing on the floor. I glanced away—unable to look directly at him—and sucked in a breath as a pulse of potent force pushed against me, against the whole world, as Uriel walked past.

Mother of God, why was he here in my home?

Review: Darkest Heart - Juliette Cross

Wrong side of heaven...right side of redemption.

Anya—a stoic, blue-winged angelic warrior— was bitten by a demon prince in battle, and now she has precious little time to find a cure for his deadly venom. But the only archangel with the power to stop the dark poison from corrupting her body and soul is missing. She’ll have to trust her guide, the outcast high demon Dommiel, who is as handsome as he is dangerous if she has any hope.

An outcast of his own kind, high demon Dommiel stays under cover while the war between angels and demons rages on. But when the only person who ever showed him kindness asks for his help, he has no choice but to try to save the angel. Venturing back into the dens he has avoided for so long, Anya makes him want and feel things he never thought possible.

But Dommiel knows there is no way an angel can ever love a demon…

Review:
Anya is an angel on a mission to save the missing archangel Uriel and if that means she has to pair up with the demon Dommiel, a very unlikely ally, then she's willing to take that risk. The journey to find Uriel is fraught with danger but Anya is on a deadline and she knows that failing to find him quickly will have devastating consequences.

I didn't realise when I requested Darkest Heart that this is a spin off from Juliette Cross' Vessel Trilogy and to be honest there were times, particularly at the beginning of the story, that I was a little lost in this world. I think if I'd already read the previous trilogy I would have found this story much easier to get into but as it stands I still have a lot of questions about how angels and demons ended up using earth as a battleground. I got a bit lost when it came to the different groups of fighters and who was fighting for which side. This did get easier in the second half but it made the first half of the book lag a bit while I tried to figure things out so I definitely think people who are familiar with the earlier books will appreciate this one more. Having said that I did enjoy the story enough that I want to go back and read the earlier series and I'm definitely hoping that we're going to get a book about Uriel soon!

Anya and Dommiel are total opposites which isn't surprising when you consider one is an angel and the other is a demon. Anya was a little too innocent for my tastes but she was a very skilled warrior in her own rights and I liked that she was willing to accept her own feelings quite quickly, we didn't have a pages of her doubting herself and Dommiel and instead she was focused on making things work. Dommiel is a reluctant ally at first, once an angel he was stripped of his wings when he fell and became a demon and he now seems to play both sides off against each other. I wish we'd been given more information about his background and what happened to make him fall, he seemed to believe he was betrayed by his brother but I'm still a little hazy on why that is or how it all happened. He may be a demon but Dommiel has his own moral code and there are lines he isn't willing to cross, make no mistake he admits he's done terrible things, but he's not an all out evil character and I think we probably would have seen some of his struggle in previous books.

This is paranormal romance so the attraction between Anya and Dommiel is pretty instant but as far as relationship building goes they did take a little time to act on it. I enjoyed spending time with them both the banter between them was fun and there was a nice amount of flirting as things started to heat up. I'm definitely interested to see where this series goes, especially if we're going to get a book about Uriel, but I think I'll try to read the Vessel Trilogy and the connected novel, The Deepest Well, before I continue reading. Hopefully that will give me a better understanding of the world and help me avoid the sense of confusion I felt reading this one.

Review:
I left it a long time between reading this one and finally getting around to writing my review so I'm going to keep it fairly short and sweet but I loved The Black Lily. This is a Cinderella retelling with a twist, Arabelle isn't a simpering idiot who is desperately waiting for the prince to save her, in fact she's the leader of the rebellion and the only reason she's attending the ball is because she intends to kill the vampire prince. Arabelle is sick of the vampires abusing their powers and getting away with murdering people and she's determined to lead a revolution that will put the humans back in charge. Marius had no idea he was Arabelle's target so it comes as quite a shock when she stabs him when he's in the middle of seducing her. He's so surprised by her attack that she managed to escape while he recovers from being stabbed in the heart but there is no way he'll let her get away with that so he sets out to hunt her down.

This was such a fun enemies to lovers romance, the attraction between Arabelle and Marius is pretty much instant but I can get on board with lust at first sight so that wasn't an issue. Although their relationship developed quite quickly it never felt rushed and I was definitely on board with the fact that Arabelle was an independent and experienced woman who knew what she wanted and was willing to fight for her people. There was more to Marius than first met the eye and he wasn't just a pampered prince who was used to being waited on.

The story has more to it than romance, there was lots of action too and we're introduced to some really fun characters along the way, I have a pretty good idea who the next couple will be and I'm definitely exited to spend more time in this world. Once I'm caught up with this series I think I'm going to have to start working my way through Juliette Cross' backlist too!
