Review: Danger Next Door - Katie Reus

After an explosion leaves detective Grant Caldwell scarred he quits his job and tries to hide from his well-meaning family while he heals. When Belle Manikas, a beautiful new neighbour, moves in next door with problems of her own he finds himself drawn to her even while he tells himself she’s nothing but trouble. Even though he knows he’d never have a chance with a woman like her—not with his disfigurement—he can’t stay away.

Thanks to severe health problems as a child Belle grew up sheltered and smothered by her loving, if overbearing, family. Now that she’s finally out on her own she plans to wring everything she can out of life. When she sets her sights on her brooding neighbour nothing can stop her from getting him into bed—until a madman fixates on her.

With Grant now working for Red Stone Security, he sees it as his duty to protect her at all costs. Unfortunately a violent criminal is stalking Belle and will stop at nothing until he’s destroyed her.

Review:
After an explosion in the middle of a drugs bust left Grant horribly scarred and medically retired from the police department he has become a bit of a recluse. But when his neighbour finds herself in trouble he knows he has to help her. The attraction he feels towards Belle is intense but can she see beyond his scars to the man inside and is he brave enough to let her try?

I enjoyed the first story in this series No One to Trust and when I found out the sequel Danger Next Door was about Porter's brother Grant I immediately purchased my copy. These brothers are the kind of alpha heroes that I love to read about - all ex-military men who now work in law enforcement or private security they are very protective of their loved ones and the women in their lives. They can come across as a little overbearing at times but they have hearts of gold and they want to look after the women they love not just control them. I really loved Porter but I have to say that I think Grant has knocked him off the top spot for my favourite Caldwell brother! He is just so sweet and sexy at the same time. He received his injuries in the bravest way possible - protecting someone else from harm - and I hated that he felt embarrassed by the scaring. I could understand why he had lost his confidence but I wanted him to realise how sexy he was.

Luckily Belle was a great heroine and I loved the way his scars were never an issue for her. She saw them more as a sign of the hero that he was and still found him incredibly attractive. Belle really was the perfect heroine for Grant and I loved watching the way things developed between them. I also really enjoyed the storyline, I was genuinely concerned for Belle's safety as she continued to come under attack and I loved the way Grant looked out for her (with a little help from his family and a few friends). The story had been described as a a Beauty and the Beast re-telling but I would say that apart from the scarring and Belle's name and beauty the story goes in it's own direction. This is perfect for when you're looking for a fairly quick read with a hot alpha male, a worthy heroine, a scary bad guy and some hot action. I'm really hoping that Katie Reus plans to continue this series - I'd love to read more about the third brother Harrison and I'm also very curious about the friend Travis!

Review: No One to Trust - Katie Reus

Computer security specialist Elizabeth Martinez has never been able to turn her back on her brother Benny. When his risky lifestyle finally lands him in harm’s way, Elizabeth finds herself dragged into the dangerous underworld with him and into the cross hairs of one of Miami’s death-dealing drug lords. Only after her ex-boyfriend saves her does she realize she might have no choice but to depend on the one man she has tried so desperately to forget.

Former Marine Porter Caldwell never should have let Elizabeth walk away from him all those months ago. She means more to him than anything and now that she’s in danger and turned to him for help, he won’t make that mistake again. When a local gang targets her and she’s nearly killed in a drive by shooting, Porter vows to do whatever it takes to keep her alive. Even if it means turning his back on all that he’s sworn to uphold.

Review:
As the only member of her family still talking to her brother Benny, Elizabeth finds it impossible to say no to him when he comes to her for help. But helping Benny puts her life in danger and when she finds herself under fire from a drug dealer her ex-boyfriend steps up to keep her safe. Porter can't stand the idea of Elizabeth being in danger - especially because of the junkie brother who came between them when they were dating - and will do anything to keep her safe. The attraction they feel for each other has never faded and Porter is determined to woo his woman while he rescues her.

This was just the kind of story I was looking for, I wanted something that I could finish in one sitting - something with action, romance and a few hot scenes to keep me entertained and No One to Trust hit the spot perfectly. Both of the main characters are likeable, the relationship felt believable and because they have a history together it didn't feel rushed. I also really liked the side characters with Porter's brothers Harrison and Grant on the scene - in fact I was really pleased to find Grant's story is already available (called Danger Next Door). This is a whole family of tough ex-military men who all work in law enforcement and private security and I have a feeling I'm going to fall for them all!

The action kicks off right from the beginning as you watch Elizabeth walk into the home of a major drug boss to rescue her brother. I have to admit it was a bit frustrating how willing Elizabeth was to put herself in danger to rescue Benny - I wanted to shout at her to let him fix his own messes for once! Having said that as you find out more about their history you understand why she feels the need to be there for him and you have to admire Elizabeth for being so loyal to her family. Anyway, the pace was really good and pretty non-stop from start to finish but I also loved the chemistry between Porter and Elizabeth. There was something raw about this couple that really drew me in. This was the first story I've read by Katie Reus but I've already purchased Danger Next Door and am looking forward to reading it next.
