Review: IncrediBuilds: Harry Potter: Stag Patronus Book and 3D Wood Model - Jody Revenson

Patronuses are one of the most difficult and powerful defensive charms a witch or wizard can conjure. This book gives a behind-the-scenes look at how this magic was imagined, designed, and brought to life for the Harry Potter films. Readers will get a look at how the filmmakers crafted each Patronus s ethereal appearance, how Harry Potter s stag saved him from the Dementors, and how the mysterious doe led him to the Sword of Gryffindor. Finally, participate in the magic by building your own stag Patronus with the included do-it-yourself wood model, and paint it any way you like!

Review:
I've reviewed quite a few of these Incredibuilds model kits now so I'm sure most of you know what to expect from these kits. The models come as a sheet of wood and you have to pop out the pieces and follow the instructions to slot them all together making, in this case, a model of Harry's Stag Patronus. I've found all of these models fairly easy to build and they've all held well even without using any kind of glue so you don't need to buy additional materials. Of course you can paint them if you like but I've left all of mine as plain wood and they're still really cute bookshelf decorations.

Each model comes with a small booklet with insider information about the Harry Potter books and movies. This booklet talks about the Patronus spell, has a section on the Dementors that it repells, talks about the effects they used to create both Dementors and Patronuses in the movies, talks about Dumbledore's Army and the different Patronuses each of the characters creates. It's not a large book so you'll be able to read through it very quickly but it's a nice accompaniment to the model.

I've really enjoyed making these model kits, I think I've done nearly all of the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts ones now so I'm hoping they might come out with a few new designs but to be honest I'm starting to run out of shelf space to store them all anyway! These do make great gifts for Potterheads though so I'd recommend them as gifts for any HP fans in your life.

Review:
I've been enjoying collecting these Incredibuilds Harry Potter model kits so while the Sorting Hat was definitely one of the easier models to make it still looks great on my bookshelves with the other models. It isn't my favourite of the set, I like the animals more, but they've done a good job of creating a recognisable Sorting Hat. While this model was very easy to make I did end up damaging a small part and having to glue it in place so be careful when putting all the pieces together.

As with all of these kits this comes with a book about how they brought the Sorting Hat to life for the movies. It also has sections about Professor McGonagall, The Great Hall, Dumbledore's Office, Fawkes, the Sword of Gryffindor as well as details on other hats seen throughout the series.

Review:
As much as I love these Incredibuilds Harry Potter model kits I hate spiders so I wasn't sure about buying this Aragog kit but it's actually kind of cute, well in a weird kind of way lol. The booklet contains all sorts of interesting facts, illustrations and photos of how they created Aragog and the rest of the acromantulas for the Harry Potter movies. The animatronic model of Aragog used for filming Chamber of Secrets weighed a ton and with an eighteen-foot leg span it was the size of an elephant!

These kits are all easy to build but you do need to be extra careful removing the pieces for this model from the laser cut board. The legs in particular are very long and thin so would be easy to break if you don't pay attention. As far as the actual build goes this was one of the easier models in the range, everything slots together really easy and there aren't that many pieces. It looks fabulous when it's finished though and they've done a great job of capturing the character.

These models make great shelf decorations and are sure to be a hit with Potterheads of all ages.

Review:
This is one of my favourite Incredibuilds models so far, it was fun to make and took a little longer than the other ones I've done (Niffler, Dobby, Buckbeak etc) because it had more pieces. More than ever it's really important to follow the instructions carefully when building this one and it's so much easier to keep track of the pieces if you only remove them from the board as you need them.

You can choose to paint your model if you like, the booklet it comes with even includes some colouring suggestions, but even unpainted these are nice little models. The book has a few interesting facts about the Fantastic Beasts movie and some of the different beasts but it's only short so you're really buying this for the model not for a book to read.

These books make a fab gift for any Harry Potter fan, they're fun to make and they look great as bookshelf decorations.

Review:
As a total Potterhead I have an ever growing collection of Harry Potter books and other related merchandise. Slap a HP logo on anything and you're pretty much guaranteeing a large number of fans will throw their money at you but we all know some items are worth more than others. The Character Vault is a lovely hardback that is packed full of photos from the movies and fun facts and information about all the main characters. Is the kind of book you can pick up and flick through again and again and will always spot something new on each read.

The book is split into 9 different sections:

Chapter 1: Hogwarts students - Has multipage spreads for Harry, Ron, Hermione, Neville, Fred & George, Ginny, Draco and Luna.

Chapter 2: Hogwarts staff - This is the largest chapter and profiles Dumbledore, Hagrid, Filch, Pomfrey, Hooch, McGonagall, Sprout, Flitwick, Snape, Quirrell, Lockheart, Lupin, Moody, Umbridge, Slughorn and the Hogwarts Ghosts.

Chapter 3: Student Robes & Quidditch Sportswear - an in depth look at the school uniforms.

Chapter 4: The Triwizard Tournament - Information about the Hogwarts Champions Harry and Cedrick along with sections on Beauxbatons, Durmstrang and reporter Rita Skeeter.

Chapter 5: Celebrations - Looks at costumes created for the Yule Ball and Professor Slughorn's Christmas Party.

Chapter 6: The Order of the Phoenix - Profiles on the Order of the Phoenix members not mentioned elsewhere - James, Lily, Sirius, Nymphadora and Kingsley.

Chapter 7: Dark Forces - Profiles on Voldemort, Peter Pettigrew, Bellatrix and the Death Eaters including a neat little additional booklet with pictures of some of the Death Eater masks.

Chapter 8: Ministry of Magic - General information about Ministry uniforms along with profiles of Cornelius Fudge and Rufus Scrimgeour.

Chapter 9: Families - Sections on the Dursleys, Xenophilius Lovegood, the Malfoys and the Weasleys.

Epilogue: Nineteen Years Later - a quick section about ageing the characters for the final scene as they watch their kids go off to Hogwarts.

Also included in an envelope attached at the back of the book is two posters, one featuring characters from the Order of the Phoenix and the other featuring Death Eaters.

This is a lovely addition to any Potterhead's collection but I'll warn you now, flicking through this book is almost guaranteed to make you want to watch the movies again!

Review:
I've really enjoyed building these Incredibuilds model kits, they're pretty easy to put together but it's a satisfying way to spend half and hour and I love having the finished models to decorate my bookcases with. I think the Golden Snitch was probably the most awkward of the models to put together, most of it is very straightforward and super easy but when you get to step 11 you'll probably have to gently use a hammer to get that spike to go through the rest of the model so younger builders may need assistance at that point.

This is probably the model that would be easiest to paint after building, the others I'd recommend decorating the pieces before together but there aren't so many awkward angles here so you can easily add paint to the finished model if you want to. I still think they look fine without any decoration though so I'm not going to be in a rush to paint mine. The Snitch model stands about 11cm tall at the highest point and the wingspan is 23cm tip to tip so it's not too large but looks nice on display.

As with all of these kits the hardback book is only about 30 pages long but it includes lots of information about they filmed the Quidditch matches for the movies. Everything from how they designed the costumes and decided on the shape of the brooms to how they filmed the actors against blue screens so they could add the CGI background later on. There are lots of pictures from all different production stages and even though it's only a quick read Harry Potter fans are sure to find it interesting.

The only Harry Potter model set I'm missing now is the Aragog one which I'm actually a little reluctant about buying - do I really need a giant spider on my bookshelves? I definitely want to start collecting the Fantastic Beasts ones though, the only two available right now are a Niffler and the Swooping Evil which both look like pretty cool sets to build and I wouldn't be surprised if more are released later down the line.

Review:
This is the second of the Harry Potter Incredibuilds model sets that I've built and Buckbeak was much easier to put together than the Dobby model (not that either were particularly difficult but this one had less pieces!). I did find it a bit more fiddly popping the pieces out of the wooden board they come on, partly because there were some very thin and easy to break parts, but as long as you're careful it should be fine. Make sure you follow the included instructions and you'll have the model made in no time.

The finished model stands about 12cm tall and is about 20cm wide across the wing span. If you're going to decorate the model it would probably be easier to paint it before you put the pieces together and you'll find some painting tips at the back of the book if you want to make your model look like the original Buckbeak. I was happy to leave mine undecorated though and it's still a really nice looking model.

The hardback book it comes with is only about 30 pages long but it includes lots of fun facts about Hippogriffs in general and Buckbeak in particular. You'll find stills from the movie, pictures of the life sized models they created, quotes from the books and information on exactly how they brought Buckbeak to life including 3 different full sized models and a lot of CGI. It's not a long read but it was interesting to see how much effort went into creating just one character who doesn't even have a major role in the story really. They wanted to create a fantastical creature that was as real to life as possible and studied both birds and horses to help them work out how Buckbeak would move.

I love these sets, they're brilliant for any Harry Potter fans who will enjoy the information included in the book and love having a finished model to display on their bookshelves. I plan to collect them all eventually!

Review:
I've been wanting to buy one of the Incredibuilds Harry Potter model kits ever since I built the Firebolt from the Winter at Hogwarts box set so when I spotted a copy of this at a good price I couldn't resist. The set comes with a small (in page numbers rather than in size) hardback book that's full of fun facts about some of the House Elves from the Harry Potter books and movies. Obviously Dobby is the star House Elf of the series but there is some information about Winky (who never made it into the movies) & Kreacher too.

See pictures of some of the artist sketches created when they were trying to decide what Dobby looked like, learn about how the Dobby you see on screen was the first fully computer-generated character in the Harry Potter series (they used tennis balls on sticks as place holders for the actors to interact with during filming!). Although he was a CGI character they still created several life sized models of him to help with placement on set but the only time one of them appears in the movie is during Dobby's final heartbreaking scene. This booklet is only about 40 pages but it's packed full of fun facts and I really enjoyed flicking through it.

Of course the main thing about these Incredibuild sets are the models though. You'll receive a laser cut sheet of wood (whatever you do don't pop out all the pieces before you get started - remove them as you need them so you can easily find the pieces you're looking for!) and an instruction sheet. All of the pieces are numbered and they're very easy to pop out, just follow the simple instructions and slot the pieces together and before you know it you'll have a finished model of Dobby.

You'll find tips on decorating your model inside the main hardback (rather than in the separate instruction sheet which seems a little illogical to me!). To be honest it would probably be easier to paint the pieces before you slot them all together but since I made the model before looking at the book I didn't figure that out until it was too late. I actually quite like my model as it is though so I'm not planning on decorating it further at this time.

Dobby stands about 15cm high and 8cm wide from elbow to elbow, he's very steady on his feet so you don't need to worry about him tipping over and I think he'll make a lovely addition to anyone's Harry Potter collection. I can't wait to make more of these (I've already ordered the Buckbeak and Golden Snitch versions!).
