Review: Her Sinful Angel - Felicity Heaton

Cast out of Heaven and now the king of Hell, Lucifer is a powerful fallen angel warrior with a heart as cold as ice and soul as black as the bottomless pit. For millennia, he has ruled his realm with an iron fist as he plots the demise of his ancient enemies. When one of those enemies dumps an unconscious mortal female in the courtyard of his fortress and leaves her there, Lucifer finds himself entranced by the beguiling beauty and tempted beyond all reason. But is the enchanting Nina an innocent pawn in the eternal game or part of a plot against him?

Review:
Her Sinful Angel is a nice bonus story in a series that I thought had already finished, it was actually really great to revisit this world and see a couple of the previous characters. It's a shame we didn't have the chance to catch up with all the couples but I actually liked how the story stuck closely to the main characters so I'm not going to complain about that. This story was previously published in the Dark and Damaged Box Set and is now available as a stand alone ebook.

I have to admit I never really saw Satan as a romance hero, especially not in a series where we've seen him do such horrible things, but in the last few books our Lucifer has started to show a softer side to him, especially where his daughter and grandson are concerned. I was very curious to see how Felicity Heaton would redeem him and I was actually pleasantly surprised that she didn't try to gloss over his past or the bad things he has done. Lucifer was betrayed and tricked into becoming a fallen angel, he is bitter because of this and he has made it his life's work to reek revenge on heaven's angels. We've seen before in this series that nothing is black and white and that both heaven and hell are made up of all sorts of grey areas and that definitely continues to be the case here. Lucifer certainly hasn't suddenly turned "good" just because he's met the woman of his dreams. He's still capable of committing atrocities but I was able to completely believe that he would never hurt Nina or his family.

Nina was an interesting character because she knew nothing of the supernatural until the day she was kidnapped by an angel and rescued by the devil. This is all very new to her and it takes her a while to accept what has happened to her but she is very loyal to those she cares about and she's smart enough to make decisions based on what she's seen rather than listen to what other people tell her. The romance does develop very quickly, as it has with the rest of the series, but somehow Felicity Heaton always manages to pull it off without making me feel uncomfortable. I found myself thoroughly enjoying Her Sinful Angel and kind of hoping that we're going to see more of Lucifer and all the other angels from this series.

Review: Breaking Nova - Jessica Sorensen

Nova Reed used to have dreams-of becoming a famous drummer, of marrying her true love. But all of that was taken away in an instant. Now she's getting by as best she can, though sometimes that means doing things the old Nova would never do. Things that are slowly eating away at her spirit. Every day blends into the next ... until she meets Quinton Carter. His intense, honey brown eyes instantly draw her in, and he looks just about as broken as she feels inside.

Quinton once got a second chance at life — too bad he doesn't want it. The tattoos on his chest are a constant reminder of what he's done, what he's lost. He's sworn to never allow happiness into his life ... but then beautiful, sweet Nova makes him smile. He knows he's too damaged to get close to her, yet she's the only one who can make him feel alive again. Quinton will have to decide: does he deserve to start over? Or should he pay for his past forever?

Review:
Jessica Sorensen is one of my favourite NA authors, she always creates such realistic characters, ones who are deeply messed up and who don't always deal with their problems in the healthiest ways but that just makes them all the more compelling to read about. Breaking Nova is about two of these damaged people and about one of them learning to move forward with their life. It doesn't really end with a happily ever after but I'm kind of hopeful that these characters will sort themselves out eventually and I'm looking forward to following their journey.

Nova lost the love of her life when he committed suicide and she was traumatised when she found the body. Quinton survived the car crash that killed both his girlfriend and his cousin but because he was the driver he blames himself for what happened and suffers with survivors guilt. They're both in a bad way and have turned to drink and drugs as a way to make the pain stop. I definitely don't agree with a lot of the choices they make but it's easy to understand why they act the way they do. Their lives have been turned upside down and they've got to make the choice to get past what happened so they can find a way to move forward.

I think Breaking Nova was probably the darkest book I've read by Jessica Sorensen but I absolutely loved it. This isn't always an easy book to read, in fact at times it's downright depressing, but I enjoyed seeing Nova make such huge changes in her life. She has had it tough but she has come out on the other side stronger than ever and I was really proud of her. On the other hand Quinton is still heading towards rock bottom, I'm kind of scared to see how much harder things are going to get for him before he manages to pick himself back up but I have confidence that he can do it. What I really appreciated was that the romance between them doesn't automatically solve all their issues, they still have to find a way to deal with the past. Nova has some difficult decisions to make but I really felt like she did the right thing and it was good to see her put herself first for a change.

This was a heart wrenching story that really tugged at my emotions and I can't wait to see these characters continue to turn their lives around.

Review: Me and Earl and the Dying Girl - Jesse Andrews

Me: My name is Greg Gaines. I am seventeen. I am the one who wrote this book. My physical appearance is unsatisfactory, and there is probably a fungus eating my brain. I'm not even sure I'm a human.

Earl: Earl Jackson is the only person who is even sort of my friend. We make mediocre films together. Werner Herzog is our biggest influence. Earl is generally filled with violent rage.

Dying Girl: During my senior year, my mother forced me to become friends with a girl who had cancer. This brought about the destruction of my entire life. If you seriously want to read about that, then I guess this brain-punchingly inane book is for you.

Review:
I'm not really too sure what I expected when I picked up Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, obviously from the title you can tell that something terrible is going to happen and I guess I thought it was going to be a fairly emotional story but that wasn't what I got. Instead this was a light hearted and very quick read but while I liked it I didn't love it as much as I had hoped to. The story is full of humour but I'm afraid a lot of it missed the mark for me, I just didn't get it and it almost felt too light hearted considering the sensitive topic it was dealing with.

The characters were okay but I didn't really feel much of a connection to any of them, I guess I just felt like I was being kept at a distance. I think that was partly down to the writing style which consists of very short chapters and quite a lot of scenes written in the form of movie scripts, lists or telephone conversations. The narrator Greg can be quite selfish and insensitive which is something I could have forgiven but I wanted to see him grow up a bit as the story progressed and it didn't really happen. It didn't seem like the events in the book had any lasting effect on him and I would have thought that seeing a friend die would have more of an impact. The antics of Greg and Earl were funny in the beginning but grew old fast and I ended up being disappointed.

To be fair I probably wasn't in the best place when I read this one because we'd just had some very bad news as a family. I think I was hoping for something heart-wrenching like Jenny Downham's Before I Die to help me cry it out and that isn't what this book is even trying to be so I can't blame the story for my expectations. I may have enjoyed it more if I'd picked it up at another time but I have to say I think the book just isn't the best fit for me. I know several people who absolutely loved the story though so would hate to put anyone off giving it a try.

Review:
Hunted by a Jaguar is the fourth story in Felicity Heaton's Eternal Mates series but although it includes appearances from characters we have already met I think the story would work very well as a stand alone. I love this series though so personally I think you should read them all starting with Kissed by a Dark Prince!

Kyter is an alpha shifter with a dark secret, he left his jaguar pride behind when he left the jungle and has never looked back. Now the owner of Underworld, a nightclub that caters to shifters, fae and demons alike, Kyter has left his past behind him. When he finds out that demons attacked his old pride and murdered his mother he swears to get revenge. All he needs is to find the artefact that will enable him to summon his enemy. Iolanthe is a treasure hunter who is also searching for the artefact, she only has a week to find it for her client or she will suffer the consequences. Kyter and Iolanthe are both desperate to find the item which leads to a fierce rivalry between them but could they both get what they want if they can just find a way to work together?

I have to say how much I loved this story, we met Kyter in the first book in the series when Loren and the others visited Underworld but we didn't know much about him and I enjoyed finding out about his past. It was quite heartbreaking reading about his upbringing though and I was so mad at the way his pride had treated him - he was an innocent child and they blamed him for something that was completely out of his control which was just maddening. Considering the way he was raised he has grown up to be a surprisingly caring guy, he has built a good life for himself and he has turned Underworld into a safe place for others to be, somewhere that they will be protected and cared for. Kyter was abandoned by his family but he has created a pride of his own and he will protect the members with his life. His biggest regret was leaving his mother behind when he left so he feels terrible now that she has been murdered. The only thing he can do is promise to avenge her and there is nothing that will stop him destroying the demon who hurt her.

Iolanthe is a new character (well, I don't remember seeing her before anyway) but she is the sister of someone we're very familiar with. I'm not going to say who for fear of spoilers but I will say I loved getting to see another side of one of my favourite characters through Iolanthe and I really, REALLY hope that we get their story soon - it's one I've been wanting for such a long time now! I loved how strong Iolanthe was, she isn't a weak heroine who needs a man to rescue her, in fact she's smart, intelligent and more than capable of protecting herself. When she first meets Kyter she wants nothing to do with him, the last thing she wants is a man who is going to stop her from living her life the way she wants to. Kyter is a bit of an idiot at their first meeting so I was really pleased that Iolanthe didn't take any of his crap, luckily he soon wises up and realises how stupid he was and it doesn't take long for him to make up for it. I was glad that he realised his mistake and was man enough to apologise for his actions and I don't blame Iolanthe for finding it hard to resist his flirtatious nature. There is a lot of fun banter between the two of them, they have fantastic chemistry and I enjoyed seeing them learn to work together.

Hunted by a Jaguar was a very satisfying story and it's left me eager to get my hands on the next book in the series. This series just gets better and better and I'm sure Cavanaugh is going to win my heart in Craved by an Alpha.

Review:
I'm a huge fan of Maria V. Snyder and I absolutely love her Chronicles of Ixia series. I think the first three books starring Yelena were probably my favourite but I've still been really enjoying the Glass books featuring Opal so I was looking forward to seeing how things played out for her in Spy Glass. I hate to say it but I think this is the first time I've been disappointed by one of this author's stories. Don't get me wrong, there were a lot of things to love about this book and I think that anyone who has started Opal's trilogy will have to read this book if only to see the end of her journey but there was one thing in particular that really annoyed me.

I'm going to talk about the positives first and I think the biggest was seeing how far Opal has come since the beginning of the series. She's been through so much and losing her magic at the end of the last book left her despondent and depressed. She feels more than a little sorry for herself at the beginning of this book but I can't blame her for that and I thought the author did a good job of showing how lost and alone Opal felt. I loved seeing her come to terms with what had happened though and deciding to make the best of things. We also get to see her spending a lot of time with Valek which was brilliant, Valek has always been a favourite of mine so I'm never going to complain about him getting more page time! There was plenty going on in this story, lots of action and a good does of mystery and magic that kept me turning the pages.

The main issue I had was to do with Devlin and is where I veer into spoiler territory so you might not want to continue reading this review if you haven't read the book yet! I've actually grown to like Devlin a little in the last couple of books which surprised me considering how we first met him, we've seen a lot of changes in his character and I do think that people can redeem themselves and turn their lives around. I could even get on board with Opal forgiving him to a certain extent and I would probably have been happy to see him find love in a future book once he'd done a bit more to prove that he's changed. What I really, really, REALLY couldn't believe was that Opal fell in love with him. That just didn't seem even slightly realistic and I'm just completely unhappy about their relationship.

This is the man that tortured her both physically and emotionally, not just once but on multiple occasions going on for days at a time. He broke her, he basically destroyed her and he made her betray her friends and the people she loved. Not only was he involved in her sister's murder but he also swapped souls with her boyfriend and then used her boyfriend's body to seduce her and torture her all over again! All this has happened in the space of the last two books and yet now I'm expected to believe that she can not just forgive him but fall head over heels in love? Nope, I don't believe it. In fact I HATE it. I'm disappointed in Opal and I'm angry with Maria V. Snyder for leaving Opal's series with such an unrealistic ending. Of course the one potential silver lining to Opal ending up with Devlin is that Kade is still single and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we're going to get to see more of him in the next part of the series. I'd really like to see him meet someone and get his own happily ever after.

I may have been disappointed with Opal and Devlin's relationship but I've still really enjoyed the series as a whole and I would highly recommend all 6 of the current books in the Ixia series. I can't even begin to tell you how excited I was to learn that Maria V. Snyder was writing a new trilogy for the series and the first book, Shadow Study, is one of my most anticipated reads of 2015 - especially since it is going to be told from the points of view of three of my favourite characters in the series - Yelena, Valek and Janco!

Review:
I really enjoy this series so it was great to pick up The Girl with the Iron Touch and catch up with Finley, Griff, Emily, Sam, Jasper and Jack. I love the way Kady Cross manages to give all the characters a chance to shine. This story gives both Emily and Sam a much larger role but we still get to see how the others are doing. Griff is struggling to cope after the events in the previous book, he has pulled back into himself and is keeping secrets from the others which is worrying everyone and upsetting Finley in particular. Finley is desperate to find out what is happening with him and she's scared that she's losing him. Jasper is also struggling after everything he went through, he isn't his usual fun loving self and we see a lot less of him in this story but I'm hoping he'll have a bigger role to play in future novels. Jack is also a little on the scarce side in this story, we see more of him than Jasper but I'm such a huge Jack fan that I wanted more.

Emily has always loved Sam but she worried he would never forgive her for making him part machine to save his life. Sam has resented what he is ever since the first book but we finally saw him start to accept himself in the previous book and I was pleased to see that change continue here. Sam loves Emily too but because he couldn't accept himself he was never able to begin a relationship with her. It was so lovely to finally see them start to get closer again, unfortunately they don't get much time to decide what is happening between them before Emily is kidnapped. Sam is desperate to find her and will risk everything if it means getting her back with them but Emily is facing a dangerous enemy, one who could kill everyone she knows if she isn't smart enough to outwit him. I don't want to say too much about what actually happens with Emily but I loved seeing her use her brain to get out of the situation, she has some fun abilities that really come into play in this book and it made for a lot of edge of your seat reading.

The Girl with the Iron Touch is an action packed instalment to the series and I enjoyed every minute of it. It introduces us to a particularly interesting new character who I think will be the star of the next book and I'm definitely eager to dive back into this world again to see how things play out.

As the pieces and the players of the game reveal themselves, Troy feels the fine edges of his control slipping—control he can’t channel without hurting Ruby. The stakes are high, and the risk higher. Review:
I really loved Troy and Ruby in His Risk to Take so I was excited we were going to get to see more of the couple in Riskier Business and thought this was a great way for Tessa Bailey to introduce us to her new spin off series. If you've already read the first book you'll know that Ruby was a pool hustler who had spent most of her life travelling around with her con artist father making money for him. When we met her she was trying to turn her life around and get back on the straight and narrow, her father was no longer around and she was trying to make an honest living when she started dating NYPD Detective Troy. Since the end of that book her relationship with Troy has gone from strength to strength, she has started her own business selling custom made pool cues and has managed to stay out of trouble. Unfortunately her father is now back on the scene and he's offering her the one thing she is desperate for - information about her mother - if she'll just play one last game for him.

Troy is reluctant to see Ruby pulled back into her father's world, which isn't too surprising considering what happened the last time, but he understands how much Ruby needs the information her father is offering her and he's willing to put himself on the line to help her get it. I absolutely loved Troy in the first book and I have to say that the chemistry between him and Ruby is still off the charts. He's a brilliant dirty talker and they love to play games in and out of the bedroom which is a lot of fun to read about. Unfortunately I had one major issue with him this time around and that was his jealousy over her friendship with Bowen. It was just irritating to begin with but then Troy goes and starts a physical fight with Bowen just because Ruby was having a conversation with him and I was completely turned off by that. A little jealousy in a relationship is one thing (I'm sure we've all felt that little green eyed monster at some point in our lives!) but it is NOT attractive when a guy gets physically violent just because you're talking to another man. I absolutely hated that and it made me question my previous opinion of Troy as one of the good guys. I would not accept those actions from anyone but the fact that he's a police officer made it even worse.

As much as I enjoyed the novella Troy's behaviour really did ruin this for me. The story is hot as hell, has a couple of interesting (although fairly predictable) twists but it lost points for that one major issue. It did remind me how much I love Bowen though and I have a feeling his story is going to be very interesting so I'm excited to continue the series with his story in Risking it All. I just hope he doesn't turn out to be a jackass like Troy.

Review:
I'll admit that the main reason I wanted to read this anthology was for the stories by Nalini Singh and Ilona Andrews, I'm a huge fan of both the Psy-Changeling and Kate Daniels series so of course I was eager to be able to dive back into both of those worlds. It was a great opportunity to try a couple of new series though and I have to say that I definitely want to read more from Lisa Shearin and Milla Vane in the future. I'm going to talk about each of these stories individually but I would just like to say that if, like me, you picked up the anthology for one or two authors it's definitely worth giving the other stories a chance too. All four novellas are great and I'd be happy to recommend any of them.

I have loved Bastien ever since we first met him so I just knew that his story would be fantastic. He's such a great guy, fun loving and sweet but also incredibly protective of the women in his life as we've seen from his interactions with his sister Mercy. Bastien is currently infuriated though, he has finally caught the scent of his mate only to lose it again almost immediately. As a cat he should be able to hunt his prey wherever they go but the one person he needs to find almost desperately is managing to stay hidden from him. He isn't one to give up though and when he finally manages to track Kirby down there is no way he's letting her out of his sight again.

I don't want to say too much more about the story because there was a fabulous twist when it came to Kirby and I really enjoyed watching Nalini Singh reveal it. What I will say is that I absolutely adored this couple and I hope we get to see more of them in the future. This novella takes place over a very short space of time but it's a testament to Nalini's writing that it never felt rushed, I always find her stories completely believable no matter how short the timeline is. Kirby is one lucky girl to end up with a guy like Bastien and I'm definitely looking forward to reading his brothers Sage and Grey's stories.

Magic Steals by Ilona Andrews

The Kate Daniels Series:
A Questionable Client (Short Story included in the Magic Graves anthology)
Magic Bites
Magic Burns
Magic Strikes
Magic Mourns (Novella included in the Must Love Hellhounds anthology or available separately as an ebook)
Magic Bleeds
Magic Dreams (Novella included in the Hexed anthology or available separately as an ebook)

As a fan of the Kate Daniels series I have been rooting for Dali and Jim ever since I read their first novella Magic Dreams so I was excited to see more of them as a couple. This story fits into the timeline during events in Magic Rises while Kate and Curran are off in Europe leaving Jim in charge of the Pack while they're gone.

Dali is such a brilliant character, not only is she an incredibly rare white tiger shifter who has an unusual magical ability but she's also the only vegetarian tiger you're ever likely to meet, her eye sight is terrible and she faints at the sight of blood. Basically Dali is the complete opposite of Jim who is the Alpha of the cat clan and Curran's right hand man. I think one of the reasons I love this couple so much is because of their differences though, they compliment each other's characters so well and it's nice to see a lighter, more relaxed side to Jim because of the way he is comfortable enough to let his guard down around Dali.

Dali has a lot of insecurities about herself, she doesn't feel like she fits in around the other shapeshifters but Jim is brilliant at boosting her confidence. He is so incredibly sweet towards her and I love the way he doesn't let her keep hiding their relationship. As with the first novella there are some hilarious scenes with Dali and her mother but Jim makes the whole situation even more amusing. This novella has plenty of action, it introduces us to some more of the Indonesian mythology from Dali's ancestry and it has an incredibly sweet romance. I still hope we get to spend more time with this couple in the future but I'm very glad we got a second novella about them.

Lucky Charms by Lisa Shearin

SPI Files:
Lucky Charms (Novella included in the Night Shift anthology)
The Grendel Affair
The Dragon Conspiracy
The Brimstone Deception
The Ghoul Vendetta

The first book in Lisa Shearin's SPI Files series (The Grendel Affair) has already been published but I've not read it yet and Lucky Charms is a prequel to the series so you're fine to start here. This story introduces us to Makenna, the new Seer who has just joined the SPI (Supernatural Protections and Investigations). Makenna's first job is to track down a missing leprechaun prince and the rest of his bachelor party after they escaped from their previous bodyguards. The leprechaun's have no intention of coming home quietly though - not when there is a whole city of trouble waiting for them to find it.

This story was very light hearted and a lot of fun to read, the world Lisa Shearin has created is full of a wide range of magical creatures (Makenna's boss is a vampire and the CEO is a dragon!) and it's one I'm looking forward to exploring further. There was plenty of humour and I loved the banter between Makenna and the rest of the team she was working with. I'm very curious about her partner Ian and definitely planning on reading the rest of this series - in fact I've already ordered my copy of The Grendel Affair and can't wait to start reading it.

The Beast of Blackmoor by Milla Vane

A Gathering of Dragons Series:
(Chronological reading order as per the author's website)
The Beast of Blackmoor (Novella in the Night Shift anthology)
Silent Night (Free short story on the author's website)
A Heart of Blood and Ashes
A Touch of Stone and Snow (July 2020)

Mala is a warrior on a quest from her Goddess to tame the Beast of Blackmoor, she will do whatever it takes to achieve her goal because her people are depending upon her to protect them and she needs the Goddess's gifts to help them survive. What she doesn't realise is that the Beast is in fact a man and Kavik will do anything to avoid being enslaved again. Kavik angered Mala's Goddess so it's not too surprising that she has forsaken him but Mala believes that they can both earn redemption for themselves and their people if they only listen to the Goddess and follow her will.

I believe that The Beast of Blackkmoor is the first in a new series from Milla Vane (who you may already know under her other name Meljean Brook). This was very different to anything else I've read from this author and in a way it seemed like a bit of a strange fit for this anthology. The first three stories are UF and PNR where this is a straight fantasy and it's much, much darker than the others. I still enjoyed the story and would definitely read more if this does turn into a series but it just wasn't at all what I expected and I can see why some people haven't liked it as much. Milla Vane has created a dark world, one where you will see characters raped, beaten and tortured so its probably best to be prepared for that going in, but I really liked the main characters and enjoyed seeing them fight for their freedom and the lives of their people. This won't be the story for everyone but I'd recommend giving it a try because it might just surprise you.

Review:
I have been a fan of Terry Pratchett's Discworld series for over 15 years now but I have to admit I've fallen a little behind with the more recent books. I've actually been promising myself for a few years now that I'll reread the series again from the beginning and catch up but for some unknown reason I never quite seem to get around to it. I decided it's time to bite the bullet but rather than read the books in order I used Christmas as an excuse to read Hogfather. This book is a perfect festive read, Death has always been one of my favourite characters in the series and seeing him dress up as the Hogfather (the Discworld equivalent of Father Christmas) is absolutely hilarious.

The Auditors are causing trouble again, they may be in charge of keeping the universe running smoothly but they think it would be much better if there were no humans around messing things up. This time they've decided to target the Hogfather and they've hired the assassin Mister Teatime (make sure you pronounce that correctly unless you want to upset him - it's Teh-ah-tim-eh NOT Tea-time!) to take him out of the equation. How exactly do you go about killing someone who can't die though? Teatime has a plan and Death is the only person who has noticed what is going on and is trying to put a stop to it. He's going to need help though and the best person for the job is obviously his granddaughter Susan who is used to dealing with all kinds of monsters using her trusty poker.

Hogfather is a hilarious read, obviously Death is the star of the show (he always is to me!) but we also get to visit with the wizards at the Unseen University, catch up with Susan, and spend time with the Death of Rats. With the Hogfather out of the equation (although Death is doing his best to fill in for him) the excess belief is causing all sorts of new creatures to pop up including the Verruca Gnome and the Oh God of Hangovers which makes for a lot of amusing moments. Death has always struggled to understand humans but this leads to some fantastic moments of insight. As with all of Terry Pratchett's stories we get an insightful look into the human psyche and you have to laugh at our way of thinking sometimes. Terry Pratchett obviously sees the world through a very interesting lens and I'd love to be able to take a trip inside his mind. This reread has left me more determined than ever to complete my Discworld catch up, so hopefully 2015 will be the year I finally make some serious headway.

Review: The Pact - Karina Halle

It all started with a pinky swear . . .

Linden McGregor is tall, rugged, and gunslinger handsome; a helicopter pilot with a Scottish brogue and charm to spare. He’s also one of Stephanie Robson’s best friends and has fit into that box for as long as she’s known him.

Beautiful, funny and an ambitious businesswoman (with one hell of an ass), Stephanie Robson is one of Linden McGregor’s best friends and has fit into that box for as long as he’s known her.

But some relationships can’t be boxed, can’t be classified, can’t be tamed.

Back in their mid-twenties and tired of the competitive hit-or-miss dating scene of San Francisco, Steph and Linden made a pact to marry each other if neither one of them are in a serious relationship by the time they hit thirty.

It sounds like fun and games but as the years to thirty tick past and lovers come and go out of their lives, the pact becomes larger than life.

Sex is inevitable. Friendships are tested. Hearts are on the line.

The pact is about to change everything.

Review:
The Pact is a stand alone adult contemporary romance by Karina Halle and although it's very different to the other books I've read by her I enjoyed every minute of it. It's strange because Karina Halle seems to have this ability to make me love her stories even when they have things that should irritate me. I should have been annoyed that it takes over 40% of the book for Linden and Stephanie to get together because they're too busy dating other people and I should have been irritated by the drama that pulls them apart towards the end of the book but I was having so much fun reading their story that I just didn't care about any of that.

The story is written from dual points of view and the first half focuses on Stephanie and Linden's birthdays from the age of twenty-five when they first make their pact through to their early thirties when they finally act on it. Stephanie has been friends with Linden and James since she first started working with them both in James's bar, she dated James for a while but it didn't work out between them and the three of them have been inseparable friends ever since. Although Stephanie has always been attracted to Linden there has never been anything more between them, Linden is a player and she knows it would be far to easy to get her heart broken and she isn't willing to risk losing their friendship. Little does she know that Linden has been in love with her for years, he chose never to act on those feelings because James is his best friend and you don't date your friend's exes but he's finding it harder and harder not to tell her how he feels.

At the end of a drunken night to celebrate Stephanie's twenty-fifth birthday Linden asks her to make a pact to be each other's back up so that if they are both still single by the time they are thirty then they'll get married. Stephanie thinks Linden is joking and goes along with him for fun but Linden has never been more serious about anything in his life and he's determined to follow through on his plan. I loved the way we get to know both of the main characters, we see them through major events in their lives and get to see just how important they are to each other. They are so obviously in love with each other and it seems like everyone around them can see it but they're both oblivious to it. I spent half of the book desperate for one of them to finally make a move and although it took a long time it was definitely worth the wait. They have fantastic chemistry but their relationship is about so much more than sex and they fit together perfectly.

I had so much fun reading this story, the relationship between Stephanie and Linden was sweet, funny, sexy and so much more. Neither of the characters were perfect and they both make silly mistakes but they are always, always trying to put the other person first so it's hard to blame them for their choices. The Pact is full of sexual tension, angst and heartbreak but it's also romantic, cute and fun to read and I really hope Karina Halle decides to write more like it. If you love friends to lovers stories then this is one I'd definitely recommend!

Review:
After this Night is another fabulous instalment in the Seductive Nights series by Lauren Blakely. I really enjoyed the prequel short story and the first book but I'll admit I was a little nervous that Julia would continue keeping secrets from Clay and end up causing unnecessary drama in this book. Luckily that isn't the case and although it takes her a little time to trust Clay she does end up opening up to him and letting him in on her big secret. Of course Clay, being the kind of man he is, wants to fix everything for Julia but he understands that she needs to be able to sort things out in her own way. There was one moment where he nearly ruined things by not respecting her wishes but he was impossible to resist and I found myself forgiving him fairly quickly because he was so obviously trying to protect her.

Julia and Clay have fabulous chemistry, something that has been true from the moment they first met but that has only grown stronger as they've got to know each other better and I love spending time with them both in and out of the bedroom. This series is pure brain candy but it's fun to read with a sweet romance and hot as hell sex scenes. I definitely can't wait to see how things turn out for them both in the next instalment. If you're looking for a series that's quick and fun to read and will leave you desperately in need of a cold shower then you can't go far wrong with this one!

Review:
I'm the biggest fan of the Beyond series, I'm a little obsessed with the world but most of all with the characters and I can't get enough of them. I think it's great that Donna and Bree (the ladies behind the Kit Rocha name) write these little novellas to give us more about some of the minor characters, the ones we see on the sidelines but who don't necessarily have a major role to play in the ongoing storyline. Although the novellas give us a glimpse on the world and often let us catch up with some of the other characters we're crazy about they are also more tightly focused on the main couple and the romance so while they're shorter they're most definitely not lacking in heat.

Beyond Possession is the story of Tatiana and Zan, we've met both of these characters previously but didn't know a huge amount about them so I was excited to get to know them better. Tatiana's father used to be the leader of Sector Four but unlike Dallas O'Kane he was neither liked or respected, he was a thug who ruled by fear and even though he is long gone he left quite a mark on the sector. Tatiana is a skilled craftswoman but she is stuck between the people who hated her father and love Dallas and those who resent the O'Kane way of life and want to see a return to the old days. Tatiana has spent years trying to protect herself and her sister Catalina, she doesn't want trouble and she knows the best way to avoid it is to keep her head down and remain neutral but that isn't easy when Catalina has started dating a guy who is very outspoken about his hatred of the O'Kanes. Tatiana has tried to keep Catalina away from Wallace but that just pushed the two of them together and now Wallace is attempting to use his connection to the Stone sisters to push his agenda.

Zan is loyal to Dallas but feels he let his boss down when he was injured in an ambush. He will do anything to make up for his failure and right now that means keeping on top of the unrest amongst the market traders and trying to smooth things over. He has always wanted Tatiana but understands her need to remain under the radar and has respected her wishes but now is the perfect opportunity for him to get closer and show her just how important she is to him. Can Tatiana continue to resist Zan's charms or will he finally get past her defences?

I loved this couple, I love how Tatiana is so independent and so protective over her sister. She has worked so hard for everything she has achieved and she isn't going to give it up easily. Zan admires her for her spirit and the last thing he wants to do is crush her dreams, he knows she needs to be able to stand on her own two feet and would never do anything to jeopardise that. Zan really is a great guy, one who may want to protect Tatiana but who would never try to stifle her and who has a tight leash on his caveman tendencies. They fit together really well and I enjoyed seeing them realise how special they could be together. Beyond Possession is a fabulous addition to the series and Tatiana and Zan are another new favourite couple. I don't know how I'm going to survive the wait for the next book - I just wish we could have a new book every month!

Review: East of Ecstasy - Laura Kaye

Annalise Fallston made peace with postponing her big-city dreams to care for her ill father, but lately she’s been filled with a restlessness not even her beloved painting dispels. Worse, the colors don’t speak to her as they always have, and all her efforts produce dark, foreboding images of a dangerous man and a terrifying future.

Devlin Eston, black-souled son of the evil Anemoi Eurus, is the only one who can thwart his father’s plan to overthrow the Supreme God of Wind and Storms. But first, Dev must master the unstable powers he’s been given. Distrusted and shunned by his own divine family, he never expected to find kindness and passion in the arms of a mortal.

But Devlin’s love puts Annalise in the path of a catastrophic storm, and in the final Armageddon showdown between the Anemoi and Eurus, sacrifices will be made, hearts broken, and lives changed forever . . . or lost.

Review:
As the son of the rogue god Eurus Devlin hasn't had much love from the rest of his family. All he really wants is to be able to fit in, he has worked hard to put a stop to his father's actions but Eurus has a way of controlling him and making it look like they're working together even though it is completely against Devlin's will. Devlin knows that time is running out though and it's clear that the rest of the Anemoi will need his help if they're going to have any chance of stopping Eurus's destructive plans. When he meets artist Anna Devlin finds himself immediately drawn to the beautiful human but it's when he sees her paintings that he realises she may hold the key to stopping Eurus once and for all. Can Devlin keep Anna safe and work alongside his uncles and cousin to stop his father or will they be too late?

I've been a fan of this series ever since I picked up North of Need over two years ago and I really have enjoyed each new instalment, I put off starting East of Ecstasy for ages though because I didn't want the journey to come to an end. This was a bitter sweet story for me, I loved the romance between Devlin and Anna and I loved the chance to catch up with the previous couples but there were some absolutely heartbreaking moments that I really wasn't expecting and I was moved to tears more than once. Laura Kaye did manage to end the series on a high note though and I'm so happy with the way things turned out.

I don't want to say too much about what everyone is getting up to now but I will say that if you've read the previous books you're going to love seeing everyone working together to stop Eurus. I felt so badly for Devlin seeing how little everyone trusted him, I could understand why they were wary of him because he'd pretty much been set up by Eurus for a long time now but knowing everything he had suffered trying to help the others was heartbreaking. I loved seeing Anna stand up for her man though, she isn't afraid to face off against the other gods and put them straight about things and I was cheering her along from the sidelines. Like most of the heroines in this series there is a lot more to Anna than there first appears and she has a few interesting abilities of her own that turn out to be vital in the battle they are about to fight. As much as I loved Anna it was Devlin who completely stole my heart though, he is such a sweet guy but he never sees the good in himself. It takes Anna to show him that he's worthy of affection and she really helps him come out of his shell around his family, watching them finally start to trust him and show him affection was beautiful.

East of Ecstasy is full of intense action and heart stopping scenes. It had me on the edge of my seat one moment, smiling or laughing the next and then back to stunned silence within a few more pages. I went through so many different emotions and never knew quite what Laura Kaye would throw at me next but I loved every minute of it. This was a fabulous end to the series and although I'm sad that the journey is over I'm glad I didn't miss it. If you haven't started this series yet then I'd definitely recommend checking out North of Need, it's a brilliant story and perfect for these cold winter nights.
