Review: Tempted by a Rogue Prince - Felicity Heaton

An elf prince on the verge of losing himself to the darkness, Vail is maddened by the forty-two centuries he was under the control of a witch and forced to war with his brother. Now, he roams Hell seeking an escape from his terrible past and the heads of all who bear magic. When demons of the Fifth Realm capture him, he sees a chance to end his existence, but when he wakes in a cell to a beautiful female, he finds not death but his only shot at salvation—his true fated mate.

Captured by the enemy of the Third Realm when the war ended, Rosalind has spent months in the cells of the Fifth Realm with her magic bound, forced to heal the new king’s demon warriors, and haunted by the lives she has taken. When she’s brought to heal an unconscious man, she discovers her only hope of escape has come in the form of her worst nightmare and the first part of a prediction that might spell her doom—a devastatingly handsome and dangerous dark elf prince.

Unwilling to fall under the control of anyone ever again, Vail must escape before the Fifth King can use him as a pawn in a deadly game of revenge, but he cannot leave without Rosalind, the woman who looks at him with dark desire in her stunning eyes and awakens a fierce hunger in his heart. A witch who drives him mad with need even as the darkness within whispers she will enslave him too.

Can Rosalind escape her fate as they embark on a journey fraught with danger and resist the temptation of her rogue elf prince? And can Vail overcome the memories that madden him in order to seize his chance for salvation and the heart of his fated female forever?

Review:
I've been a huge fan of the Eternal Mates series ever since I first read Kissed by a Dark Prince but the one character I've always been desperate to see more of was Vail so I couldn't wait to get started on Tempted by a Rogue Prince! You know how you sometimes just know that a character is going to break your heart and make you fall head over heels in love with them? That's how I've felt about Vail ever since he was first introduced and he didn't disappoint me. Vail was tricked by the witch Kordula into believing that she was his mate, she then trapped him with spells and bound him to her for over 4,000 years forcing him to do unspeakable things in her name. He had to push away his brother and hurt his own people just to keep them safe and even though Kordula is now dead and he is finally free he is unable to escape the memories of the people he was forced to murder. If you like your heroes tortured they don't come much more damaged and in pain than Vail and if there was ever a character who deserved a happy ending it's definitely him!

Rosalind is a witch who has always done her best to help people, she is a healer not a dark witch but during the battle to help King Thorne protect the Third Realm she had to kill to protect her friends. That has left a dark stain on her and she has been unable to put the memories of the horrors she witnessed out of her mind, the things she did are haunting her and she is terrified of the darkness she now feels inside her. Rosalind was captured during the battle and has spent months as a captive in the Fifth Realm, her magic has been bound so she is unable to escape but she is forced to use her healing abilities on the king's warriors. When she is made to heal an unconscious man she has no idea that he is an elf prince, the missing brother of Thorne's ally Loren, and someone she has every reason to be terrified of. Rosalind has spent her life avoiding the elves since she learned of a prediction that an elf prince would be the cause of her death but fellow prisoner Vail might just be her only hope of escaping the Fifth Realm and finding her way home.

I absolutely love Vail, he is close to the edge of madness after centuries of torture but underneath the pain and suffering he is such a sweet guy. I'm not going to try and tell you he isn't damaged though and sometimes he is outright terrifying so I was impressed with Rosalind's bravery and the faith she had in him not to hurt her. It doesn't take long for Vail to recognise Rosalind as his eternal mate but after everything he has been through it's not much of a surprise that he thinks she is using magic to trick him. He is scared to trust his feelings because he is sure she is trying to trap him just like Kordula did and there is no way he'll ever let anyone capture him like that again. Vail and Rosalind's story isn't an easy one, they have both suffered so much and there are so many things against them but that just makes their happy ever after all that much sweeter. I loved seeing this couple start to heal as they spent more and more time together and their romance was incredibly poignant. I've enjoyed all of the books in this series but Tempted by a Rogue Prince was definitely my favourite and Vail is a completely unforgettable hero.
