Review:
Verity Price comes from a long line of cryptozoologists and has spent her entire life learning about the numerous types of cryptids (supernatural creatures) who live hidden amongst us. Her family used to belong to the Covenant of St. George but once they realised that not all cryptids are monsters and that they deserve the chance to live peacefully amongst us they parted ways with the organisation and set out on their own. Now the Price family focus on helping the cryptids stay hidden and making sure they aren't a threat to humans. Verity is more than capable of dealing with any troublemakers but she also has a lot of cryptid friends and allies. Unfortunately the Covenant would prefer to see all the cryptids exterminated and since the Prices decided to break ties with the organisation they've been considered enemies.

Verity would much rather pursue a dance career than spend her days dealing with monsters and she is spending a year in Manhattan to see if she can make it as a ballroom dancer. Unfortunately for her she runs into a member of the Covenant while doing her usual rounds checking up on the local cryptid population. Now she must try to convince Dominic that the Price family aren't really traitors and that not all cryptids deserve to be killed just for existing. If she can't persuade him in time then he could bring down the entire Covenant on her head and she'll be in a whole heap of trouble along with her friends.

I had so much fun reading Discount Armageddon, Seanan Mcguire has created a world full of weird and wonderful supernatural creatures from a colony of talking, highly religious mice (who reminded me of a cross between the clockwork mice from Bagpuss and the singing cockroaches from Joe's Apartment!), to telepaths, gorgons, ghouls and dragon princess with many more in between. Verity has an incredible amount of knowledge when it comes to the hidden supernatural creatures that most of us think only exist in myths and legends and she's very good at making sure they aren't a danger to the human population and helping them exist peacefully alongside us. She didn't choose the life she has but she takes her responsibilities seriously even when she's trying to make time to follow her own dreams too.

When cryptids start being attacked Verity is worried for her friend's safety and her first instinct is to blame the Dominic and the Covenant. When he assures her that he isn't behind the murders they agree to work together to figure out what is really going on in the city. I have to admit it took me a long time to warm up to Dominic, has his own reasons for working with Verity and I wasn't at all sure he could be trusted. His attitude is terrible in the beginning but he has been trained for most of his life that all cryptids are evil and can't be trusted so he gets a real shake up when Verity starts introducing him to some of the less frightening and more friendly ones she considers her friends. I'm still not 100% sold on him or the romance that has started to develop between him and Verity but I love the world enough that it didn't cause me a major issue and I'm hoping I'll like him more as we get to know him better. This is a series that I'm excited to continue and I'm looking forward to seeing what new creatures Seanan McGuire will throw at us next, I'm pretty sure she's not done surprising us yet.

Review:
I've been a huge fan of the Night Huntress series ever since I first discovered it, I love Cat and Bones but I also love (or love to hate) all the side characters we have come to know so well throughout the series and the spin off stories. I was upset when I found out that Up from the Grave was going to be the last book in the series, I understand and respect Jeaniene Frost's decision to end things here rather than drag out the storyline but that doesn't mean I felt ready to say goodbye. I'm going to miss these characters but I guess that's the good thing about books - you can always reread them! We also have the final book in Vlad's spin off to look forward to and I'm holding on to hope that we might get an Ian book or two at some point in the future too.

Up from the Grave contains everything fans of this series would expect - lots of action, great interactions between Cat and Bones, a nasty enemy with seriously evil plans and the team joining forces with some surprising allies to save the day. I'm going to admit there were a couple of things I didn't like so much though, things that felt unnecessary to me and lowered my rating slightly, but I can't really say too much without veering into spoiler territory so I'm going to leave it at that very vague pronouncement! What I did enjoy was seeing all of the characters I've come to love play a role in the story. Denise proves what an amazing friend she is in this one and Cat is lucky to have someone like that at her back, I think we could all use a friend like Denise and I was glad she got another chance to shine. Ian is also a stand out character here and the more I see of him the more desperate I am to read a full length story about him!

I love seeing how far Cat and Bones have come in their relationship, they are so much stronger now than they were in the beginning and they really are unbeatable when they're working as a team. They are one of my favourite fictional couples and have been for a long time now so I'm going to miss them. This series is certainly one that will be staying on my keeper shelf.

Review:
When Greta saved her younger brother from a witch four years ago she ended up falling through a portal into the world of Mylena. Ever since that day Greta has had to keep her humanity a secret knowing that if anyone finds out what she is they will kill her. Luckily she was taken in by a reclusive wood sprite, Luke, who has trained her to be a successful bounty hunter but her abilities have also caught the attention of Isaac, the goblin king, and he isn't exactly the safest person to have around considering he would have to kill her if he discovers her secret. Greta is desperate to find a way back home but she isn't the only one searching for a portal and it seems that she may hold the key to opening the way which has painted a very large target on her back. Can Greta help the other humans who are trapped in Mylena find their way home and is she really ready to leave Isaac behind?

I don't think I've come across another book where you have a goblin as a romantic lead before and that was one of the things that drew me to Greta and the Goblin King. I have to admit that I spent the whole book picturing Isaac as a dark haired version of David Bowie in the movie The Labyrinth (I guess that's probably showing my age!) and I don't think that was a bad thing, it certainly didn't take me long to warm to him! I think Isaac was actually my favourite character, yes he was arrogant, secretive and at times manipulative but at the same time he was protective, caring and incredibly sexy. Some of my favourite Isaac quotes included:

"You can put up walls, Greta, but sooner or later, I'll break down every last one. There won't be any secret you can keep or any part of you I don't know..." He leaned forward, his voice lowering to a whisper. "Intimately."

"Then how about because you challenge me?" he said. "You provoke me, excite me. Make me think about things I shouldn't think about, want things I thought would be impossible once I became king."

I only wished we got to see him and Greta spending more time together but I'm hoping that is something we'll get in future instalments. Greta was a kick ass heroine, she has spent years training to survive in the incredibly inhospitable environment of Mylena and has had to learn to keep her true identity a secret. She has to work harder than anyone else to make up for the fact that she is physically weaker but she does a very good job of not letting that show. As much as Greta is desperate to go home it is only when she gets closer to the possibility of leaving that she starts to realise that Mylena has become like a second home to her. She has spent so long learning to fit in there that in some ways it is more familiar than the world she left behind. It isn't going to be easy for her to decide where she really belongs.

Alongside Greta and Isaac we are also introduced to Wyatt and his gang of Lost Boys, other humans who were unwillingly transported to Mylena by witches. I found myself really liking Wyatt and the others but I have to admit that I wasn't impressed when the obligatory love triangle was introduced. I'm so over love triangles now and unless they are done really well or there is something unique about them I'm just not interested any more. I did enjoy watching Greta fight alongside the boys though and it was interesting to see how she grew as a character when she started feeling responsible for them.

Greta and the Goblin King was a solid start to the Mylena Chronicles and has left me looking forward to future instalments. The story has great action, interesting mythology (although I still have a lot of questions that I'm hoping we start getting answers to!) and a great love interest. I'm looking forward to learning more about the bond between Isaac and Greta and will definitely be keeping my eye out for the next book.

Review:
Archer was the Bloodhound who was forced to change Hunter and since their rescue from the vampires that held them prisoner he has been considered a traitor to the guild. He is working hard to try and regain the trust of his fellow Bloodhounds but it is a slow process - especially when he is keeping secrets from them. Sent to Crystal Springs to help rid them of a vampire problem, Archer faces his most dangerous job yet - there are hardly any survivors and the number of vampires and ghouls in the area is unknown.

Grace moved to Crystal Springs for a fresh start, wanting to leave her past behind her she took the job of school teacher and has tried to become a respectable lady. Archer brings out her wilder side, she wants him from the moment she sees him but is afraid to loose her good reputation. As they work together to uncover the threat to Crystal Springs the new moon draws ever closer - and with it Grace's wish to fulfil Archer's every need grows stronger.

I'm a massive fan of the Bloodhounds series so couldn't wait to read Archer's Lady. The story is everything I've come to expect from this series and I'd highly recommend reading it. If you're new to the series then you'll want to read the books in order though so make sure you start with Wilder's Mate. Like all of the other Bloodhounds we have met Archer is definitely an alpha male - he is strong, fierce and dominant but also incredibly caring when it comes to Grace. He doesn't want her to be afraid of him and her needs are more important to him than his own. Grace has come to Crystal Springs seeking redemption for her past, she is far from innocent and has lied to and conned men for most of her life as a way to survive. More than anything she wanted to start a new and respectable life but she lives in fear of her past catching up with her.

Grace and Archer make a great couple. They both have shady pasts and recognise that it is something they have in common. What I loved most was how honest they both were, neither of them have shared their full history with anyone else but they refused to lie to themselves or each other. This couple scorch the pages and I loved the dirty talk and banter between them. Alongside the romance we have plenty of action, the town is under attack and it is up to Archer to find out why the vampires keep coming back even though there are hardly any people left. We find out some interesting things about the Guild and just how far they are prepared to go to cover their tracks. I also loved the addition of Diana - she adds an interesting dimension to the series and I can't wait to read her story (which is up next according to Moira Roger's website!).

If you have enjoyed the other stories in this series then Archer's Lady certainly won't disappoint so make sure you buy your copy today!

Ophelia retired from life as a prostitute, but her new position is even more complicated. Review:
Hunter was turned into a Bloodhound against his will and kept prisoner by those who made him.  Rescued by Wilder and Satira he is now facing his first new moon out of a cage and he is dreading the urges that it will bring.  There is only one woman he is interested in but he hates the idea of not being in control and worries that he might hurt her.  Ophelia is a retired prostitute who has taken over running the home the bloodhounds live in.  She has plenty of experience with Bloodhounds in the throws of new moon lust but her offer to help Hunter through is about more than that.  She is drawn to him like no other but doesn't know if there can be a future between them - especially when he seems to push her away at every opportunity.

Ophelia hasn't had an easy life and was forced into prostitution to survive but she has no shame over her past, as a practical woman she knows she just did what she had to do and she won't let anyone make her feel bad about that.  Now that she has retired she has accepted a job from her best friend Satira running the bloodhound household but she is finding it hard to deal with the constant demands.  All she really wants is some peace but she doesn't want to let her friend down by leaving her in the lurch.

Hunter was born to a wealthy family but hadn't made much of his life before he was taken prisoner.  He is struggling now to reconcile the person he was before with the monster he believes he has been changed into.  He hates the way he feels now and loathes the idea of not being 100% in control of his actions when the moon calls to his Bloodhound side.  I felt that Hunter was the most gentlemanly of the Bloodhounds we've met so far but that all changes when the new moon brings out his wilder side.  He was surprisingly dominant in the bedroom but you won't hear Ophelia complaining because she enjoys every second of it!  I loved the fact that he always treated Ophelia with respect and never once made an issue of her past, he wanted to court her properly and win her heart.  I thought the pair of them were a great match and I loved the way that Ophelia helps Hunter to accept the person he has become.

Alongside the romance it was great to get to see Wilder and Satira and find out how they are doing.  We get to see more of Archer which has me extra excited about reading his story when it comes out later this year.  We see some of the after effects of the changes forced on Nate in the first book and how he is struggling to accept his new condition - I really hope we're going to see more of his transition later.  We are introduced to a couple of new Bloodhounds who have been sent by the Guild to check up on Wilder and the others - possibly new heroes for future books (fingers crossed!)?  There are also some great action scenes as Hunter and the others investigate an influx of drugs into their border town - could the vampires be behind it all and if so why?  Moira Rogers can certainly pack a lot into a novella!  If you haven't started this series yet then I'd highly recommend starting with Wilder's Mate and if you enjoy that one you'll love Hunter's Prey even more.  I can't wait for Archer's Lady to release in July!

Review: Merrick's Destiny - Moira Rogers

A short story set between Wilder's Mate and Hunter's Prey.

Review:
Merrick's Destiny is a short story set just after Wilder's Mate, the first book in Moira Roger's Bloodhounds series.  It is an exclusive story only available from All Romance Ebooks but can be downloaded in various formats for whichever ereader you have.  Although the story is officially numbered 1.5 in the series it works well as a stand alone and could be a great way to try out the series to see if you like it.  I find it is hard to classify the Bloodhounds stories as they are all paranormal romances with a steampunk and wild west feel to them.

After Paralee's airship crashes in the Deadlands she and Merrick are the only survivors and must work together to get back to safety.  When Merrick comes around he can remember none of the lead up to the crash, the only thing he knows is that Paralee is his mate which comes as quite a shock considering he has spent decades alone.  What he can't understand is why he hasn't claimed her yet but he is determined to do just that - once he gets them safely away from the Deadlands and the vampires who will start hunting them as soon as it gets dark.

I'm always impressed by how much Moira Rogers can fit into a short story, they always manage to get me to connect with the characters no matter how low the page count is.  Merrick is a great hero, I have to admit I wasn't a big fan of this cover compared to others in the series but now having "met" Merrick I have to say it fits him perfectly.  He is tough and a little rough around the edges but he has a good heart and wants to protect Paralee.  He doesn't want to force her into accepting the mating bond - especially when she doesn't understand the full long term consequences.  I love the fact that Paralee is an independent woman who is capable of looking after herself, she knows what she wants and is prepared to work hard for it.  She is wary of getting too close to Merrick and losing her independence but she doesn't try to fight the attraction between them - she knows she wants him and has every intention of having him.

I really enjoyed finding out more about the Bloodhounds and their history and loved spending time in the world Moira Rogers has created.  This is a series I can't wait to continue (my review of Hunter's Prey will be posted later today) and it's one I'd highly recommend to fans of paranormal romance and steampunk.  If you like your stories scorching hot then you don't want to miss Merrick's Destiny!

Review: Wilder's Mate - Moira Rogers

Wilder Harding is a bloodhound, created by the Guild to hunt down and kill vampires on America's frontier. His enhanced abilities come with a high price: on the full moon, he becomes capable of savagery beyond telling, while the new moon brings a sexual hunger that borders on madness.

Review:
Satira works as an apprentice to weapons inventor Nathaniel, she enjoys her job and her boss is more like a father to her.  When Nathaniel goes missing she is worried for his safety and also for her future, women aren't usually allowed to become inventors and without Nathaniel's support she isn't sure how she will survive alone.  The Guild that Nathaniel works for are worried that the technology he has been working on could end up in the hands of their enemies so they send Bloodhound Wilder to search for him.  Wilder's Bloodhound abilities make him ideal for tracking down and fighting vampires but Satira can't trust him to bring Nathaniel home and insists on going with him.  Can they track down Nathaniel and get him home safely?

I haven't come across a story by Moira Rogers that I haven't enjoyed so I was really looking forward to reading Wilder's Mate.  I'm not quite sure what category to put the story in - it's definitely a paranormal romance with a hint of steampunk but it also has an old fashioned western feel to it despite the fact that it is set in the future - but no matter what genre you call it the story is fab. 

If you're looking for a dirty talking pure alpha hero then Wilder is your man and I absolutely loved him.  Strong, sexy and protective Wilder manages to stay on the hot side of alpha without stepping into overbearing and offensive territory.  In other words he's the perfect hero that will make you weak at the knees!  Satira is a great match for him, she is strong, intelligent and quite a tomboy but she isn't afraid of her femininity and although she is independent she knows her limits and is prepared to ask for help when she needs it.  As a couple they work well together, I loved the banter between them and their sexual chemistry is off the charts.

The plot is fast paced and introduces the world well, we aren't overwhelmed with information and Moira Rogers leaves us wanting more.  I still have questions about both the abilities of the Bloodhounds and the world they are living in and am looking forward to discovering more as the series continues.  We have been introduced to some of the characters who will appear in the next few stories and I can't wait to get to know them better.  I definitely recommend the story to fans of paranormal romance, steampunk or the wild west and if you like all of those genres you'll love Wilder's Mate.

Please note that as this review is for book 6 in the Night Huntress series it will contain spoilers for previous books, it is however spoiler free for One Grave at a Time. If you've ever read any of my reviews for the earlier books in this series you'll now what a massive fan I am of Jeaniene Frost so I could not wait to get my hands on this book. In fact as soon as it arrived I put everything else to one side and got stuck straight into reading it. I just can't get enough of Cat, Bones and the world that Jeaniene has created, it's going to be a long wait until I get my hands on the next instalment!

One Grave at a Time was one of my favourite books in the series so far, Cat and Bones have faced many different kinds of enemies before but this time there is a very real chance that they won't be able to win. Heinrich Kramer was a witch hunter who tortured innocent women before having them burnt at the stake (this is a real historical character which makes him even more terrifying). Since his death he has become a powerful ghost, one who can take a physical form for one day a year and who does this with the sole purpose of killing more innocent victims. How can you kill someone who is already dead? This is the question that Cat and Bones are going to have to try and find an answer to but it won't be easy. The story is so fast paced and full of action, Heinrich is the most evil characters they have faced and with his poltergeist abilities he makes for a scary opponent. Even when he has no physical form he is able to attack Cat & Bones and there is little they can do to defend themselves.

I loved the fact that we get appearances from Spade, Denise & Ian, Denise definitely kicks ass in this one and I was cheering her on from the sidelines. We also get more of Ian's trademark snarky humour and I really hope we get to see him as the hero of his own book at some point in the future. Interesting things are afoot with Cat's old unit - since the death of her uncle Don in the last book the unit has been taken over by Madigan who obviously has some kind of prejudice against vampires and Cat in particular. We still haven't found out what his motives are and I have a feeling he'll be causing them all even more problems in the future.

They are so busy dealing with threats that there isn't as much time for Cat and Bones to spend together as a couple but there are still some really sweet (and sexy) moments between them. They have come through so much and had a lot of problems in the past so it is nice to see that their relationship is much more stable now. Bones has also developed a new ability that I'm looking forward to finding out more about in the future - I foresee it having interesting implications for their future bedroom antics. Talking about (not quite) bedroom antics I'm just going to say the words "Mile High Club" and leave it at that - you have to read the book for that alone!

So the long wait for One Grave at a Time was well worth it and has left me incredible excited not only for the next instalment in Cat & Bones' story but also for Vlad's spin off series. If you haven't discovered these books yet what are you waiting for - put a copy of Halfway to the Grave at the top of your buy list - and if you are already a fan of the series you don't want to wait to pick up this instalment.

Review:
I have to admit I was wary about starting the Anita Blake series, it's intimidating starting a series that is already 20 books long!  Especially when I've seen so many people say that the later books in the series don't live up to the earlier ones, I've lost count of the number of friends I have who have given up on the books.  In fact, the only reason I own this one is because a friend gave me the first 14 books because they refuse to read any further, not really a glowing recommendation.  Having said that a lot of people have told me how fantastic the earlier books are and I've been curious to try them for myself for a while now.  I'm not sure if it was because my expectations were too high or if it was that I subconsciously don't want to like the series but I didn't feel that Guilty Pleasures lived up to the hype.

There were a lot of things I liked about the book, it was nice to read about old school scary vampires for a change - you don't seem to see as many of those in more recent urban fantasy stories.  I also liked Anita, she is quite kick ass but there is also a vulnerability to her that makes her seem more real.  She cares a lot about her friends and will put herself in harms way to protect them but she does that in spite of her fears rather than because she is fearless.  I'm curious to find out more about Jean-Claude and the connection between him and Anita but I don't know what to make of him at the moment and I'm not sure if I'll grow to love or hate him.

My main problem was with the world building, well not exactly with the world building because the author had included a lot of interesting ideas - around the fact that vampires are living in the open and humans are aware of them - that I enjoyed reading about.  The trouble was it felt like I wasn't reading the first book in a series, there were loads of times when I had to re-read pages just to try and figure out if I'd missed something but even then I was still left with questions.  I wanted to know more about Anita's animator abilities and why she raised people from the dead and I would have liked to find out more about her past history with vampires and why she hates them so much.

Although I didn't think Guilty Pleasures was the strongest start to an urban fantasy series I am curious to see where the story will take me next.  I'm hoping the next book will answer some of my questions and am looking forward to spending more time in the world Laurell K. Hamilton has created.

Review:
With Apollyon still spreading rumours about Cat's abilities it looks like the vampires and ghouls could soon find themselves at war.  Vampires have started to go missing and it looks like gangs of ghouls are responsible. Cat & Bones are forced to seek the help of ghoul queen Marie to try and prevent all out war but it seems she has an agenda of her own so can they really trust her as their ally? When Cat picks up a new ability it looks like this could cause even more trouble for them, especially if she can't learn to control it in time.

I'm a massive fan of the Night Huntress series so have been looking forward to reading This Side of the Grave for months. That's the one problem with starting a series before all of the books have been published - I've now got another long wait for book 6! Cat and Bones are my favourite urban fantasy / paranormal romance couple and I can't get enough of them. If you haven't started reading this series yet then I would highly recommend it but I would suggest reading the books in order starting with Halfway to the Grave. If you're already a fan of the series but haven't started the spin off Night Huntress World series yet then I would recommend reading those two books before you start this one, the timeline has now caught up and this does contain slight spoilers for First Drop of Crimson and Eternal Kiss of Darkness.

I'll admit that this wasn't my favourite book in the series but it was still a worthwhile addition to the series and one I'm sure fans will enjoy. The story is a little slower paced this time around but there are still some great action scenes, the only one I was a little disappointed in was towards the end and that was because I expected a bigger more dramatic ending to the one we got. Having said that I think this was probably the best possible outcome for all concerned so I'm not too upset by it! I love spending time with Cat & Bones, this is a series that I will happily re-read many times over and I'm glad that they are in a better place regarding their relationship. It's been fun watching them work out their differences but I'm glad we don't have to see them struggle as a couple forever more.

One of the things I really enjoyed in this instalment was getting to see more of Mencheres & Spade along with their partners (I don't want to give anything away if you've not read the spin off series). I like both of these characters (Mencheres in particular) a lot more than I did before I read their books so it was good to catch up with them and see how things are going. I also loved the fact we got to see a lot more of Vlad, he is such a fun character and I love the way he banters with Cat - I absolutely can't wait to get my hands on his series.

After some new developments I'm hoping that we're going to get to see more of Cat's old team in the next book. Cat has some very difficult family matters to deal with in this instalment and it was heartbreaking seeing some of the things she has to go through. Luckily she has Bones to support her but even then it isn't easy for her and after the twist at the end I'm very curious to see what the future holds. Justine (Cat's mum) continues to surprise me and I laughed out loud when I found out what she has been up to. I'm still a massive fan of the series and would highly recommend it to any urban fantasy / paranormal romance fans.

Review:
Eternal Kiss of Darkness is the second book in the Night Huntress World series which is a spin off on the Night Huntress series starring Cat & Bones. Although the original series straddles the lines between paranormal romance and urban fantasy the spin off would definitely be classed as paranormal romance. Each book in this series features a different couple and allows us to get to know characters who have been on the sidelines in the previous series. I would recommend reading the original Cat & Bones series first because you may pick up some spoilers for it if you read the Night Huntress World books first but I am a massive fan of both series and Jeaniene Frost and would definitely recommend you give them a try.

Mencheres is a character that I've been curious about as we've come to know him in the Night Huntress series and I was looking forward to finding out more about his past in Eternal Kiss of Darkness. Some of the things he has done previously made me a little worried that I wasn't going to like him much but I'm happy to say I quickly grew to love him. He has lived for a long time and done things that he isn't proud of but it becomes clear that he has done it all with the best of intentions. He cares deeply for his friends and the vampires in his line and would go to any lengths to protect them. An old enemy is determined to hurt him and isn't above using members of Mencheres' line to do it, Mencheres is tired of life but has a plan to stop his enemy even if it does mean resorting to drastic measures.

Kira is a strong and likeable heroine and one who is perfectly suited to Mencheres. She stumbles into his world by mistake when she tries to help him and ends up with a lot more than she'd bargained for. Both of the main characters have been through difficult times in their past but this only helps them understand each other better. Their attraction was instant but I also felt that Jeaniene Frost did a great job of making their relationship believable. Kira isn't the sort to sit back and let things happen to her, she is more than willing to stand up for herself which is something Mencheres finds very attractive. He is used to people falling at his feet and doing whatever he tells them to so it comes as quite a surprise to him to have someone talking back to him and actually telling him when he's wrong about something. Together they make a formidable couple and I almost like them as much as Cat and Bones which is a big compliment believe me.

Eternal Kiss of Darkness is definitely right up there with the Night Huntress books and I hope we get to see more of Mencheres and Kira in the future. I enjoyed seeing Cat, Bones and Vlad make appearances and I'm even more eager for Vlad's series and the next Cat & Bones books now! Jeaniene Frost remains on my "must read" list of authors and I'm very much looking forward to reading more of her books in the future. If you're new to her work then I'd highly recommend you give her a try.

Review:
Cat and Bones are supposed to be on a romantic getaway enjoying their honeymoon and celebrating their blood bond. However, when Cat starts to have nightmares about a powerful vampire called Gregor their holiday rapidly takes a turn for the worse. Gregor believes that Cat belongs to him - even though she has no memory of meeting him before - and he is determined to reclaim her. Why does Cat have no memory of Gregor and what does all of this mean for her relationship with Bones?

If you've read any of my previous reviews of the Night Huntress series you'll already know what a big fan I am of both Cat and Bones so I couldn't wait to get stuck into Destined for an Early Grave. While it was still an enjoyable instalment to the series I have to say it was probably my least favourite book so far.; The relationship between Cat and Bones goes through a lot of ups and downs in this instalment and for me I would have liked to have seen more of them working together as a couple against Gregor. Bones was being very secretive and while I understand his actions with hindsight, as I was reading I thought he treated Cat appallingly in places which I just didn't find believable considering the way he usually behaves. Cat also behaved equally badly and there were times when I just wanted to shake the pair of them and get them to talk to each other!

I felt the storyline was a little far fetched with the appearance of Gregor who Cat had no memory of but I still enjoyed the mystery of what was happening and the action scenes were as well written as I've come to expect from Jeaniene Frost. I loved Vlad in this book, he was such a great friend to Cat when she really, really needed someone on her side. There were a few surprises - especially with Justina - that I really didn't see coming and I am looking forward to reading the next book even though the release date seems a long way off. I'm pleased that I've got 2 books in the spin off series (Night Huntress World) to keep me going in the meantime!

Review:
Although this review won't include spoilers for At Grave's End this is the third book in the series and I would strongly recommend reading the series in order to get the most out of these fantastic books. If you haven't already discovered this series then I would definitely recommend it if you're a fan of urban fantasy and paranormal romance stories.

Things are finally looking up for Cat - she has the love of her life Bones working at her side helping to rid the world of rogue vampires and she has a great team to back her up. She should probably have guessed that things wouldn't stay easy for long though. More vampires are now aware of the Red Reaper and she is finding it harder and harder to carry out her job as a decoy without being recognised - even when she is using multiple disguises. Not only that but a female vampire from Bones' past is determined to see him dead and she is prepared to do anything to make it happen. This is an enemy like none that they've faced before - a vampire much older and considerably more powerful than Bones who isn't going to be defeated easily.

If you've read any of my reviews of the previous books in this series then you'll already know what a massive fan I am of both Cat & Bones. They are both strong individuals and they are one of my favourite urban fantasy / paranormal romance couples. I have to say that I was slightly disappointed that we didn't get to see more relationship development between them in this instalment of the series - after the amazing heat of One Foot in the Grave I was expecting to see more of the passion between them. Having said that I found that the book was so action packed that I couldn't turn the pages fast enough & I read the whole book in just one sitting.

There are so many things going on in this story - enemies old and new, betrayals by people they thought they could trust, battles to end all battles and not everyone will survive to the end of the book. A lot of old faces will make an appearance (yay for Spade & Rodney!) and we are introduced to some fab new characters too including a couple of historical figures you're bound to recognise. I loved the action in At Grave's End and you are taken on a complete roller coaster ride of emotion alongside Cat making you laugh out loud one minute and leaving you close to tears the next. There was one point where my heart was in my mouth & I just could not believe what had happened. Cat is in for a difficult ride in this book but she really does have to step up to the plate and accept her vampire heritage which I thought she managed admirably.

There are also some interesting new developments with Cat's team and I'm looking forward to see what Jeaniene Frost has in store for everyone next. I am getting slightly fed up with Tate still trying to take Cat away from Bones, yes I feel for him but there is just no way he can compete with Bones and I hope he moves on with his life soon before he ruins is friendship with Cat. Overall I didn't quite enjoy this one as much as I loved One Foot in the Grave but it was still a fab read and I can't wait to continue reading this series.

Review:
Jenn is a Protector and it is her job to keep humans safe from the supernatural creatures that most of them have no idea exist.  When she is forced to take a holiday by her boss she meets the man of her dreams and after a whirlwind romance they are quickly married.  Back home from her holiday turned honeymoon she has to juggle her day job as an estate agent alongside her Protector duties whilst trying to settle into married life.  Keeping her role as a Protector secret from her new husband Blake becomes even harder when she is tasked with finding an important bracelet before it falls into the hands of the demon lord who wants to use it to destroy the world.

Her investigations take a turn for the worse when she starts to have suspicions that her gorgeous new husband might actually be a demon.  How could her instincts have been so wrong about Blake?  With both Jenn and Blake searching for the bracelet for their own cause will it end up in the hands of good or evil?  And can sworn enemies overcome everything for the sake of love?

I Married A Demon is the first book I've read by Beverly Rae & it definitley won't be my last - in fact I'm glad to have the next book in the series, I Married A Dragon, in my TBR pile!  This was a hilarious paranormal romance that had me laughing out loud as I read.  You have to like Jenn, she is completely crazy and so good at ignoring the signs when there is something she doesn't want to see.  She isn't the most compitent heroine but her heart is in the right place and she is determined to do the right thing.  The heat between Jenn and Blake is great & they can't keep their hands off each other.  Jenn comes to realise that Blake isn't your average demon and I loved him (well I did when he was in his human form anyway!)

There is also a great supporting cast of characters who were always on hand to add to the hilarity.  I particularly liked Partner who was assigned to help Jenn by the Protectors, scenes between the 2 of them never failed to make me laugh.  There was also Jenn's human friend Myra who ends up playing an important role in the story and the mysterious George who saves Jenn's life and then wants to hang around.

I'd definitely recommend I Married A Demon if you're looking for a light hearted summer read.  I was kept guessing right to the end about how things would work out between Jenn and Blake but I thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent with them & am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Review:
Although this review won't contain spoilers for One Foot in the Grave this is the second book in a series so if you've not read Halfway to the Grave I'd recommend reading that before you continue reading this review. This is a fantastic series though so would definitely recommend giving them a try!

The end of Halfway to the Grave saw Cat trying to protect Bones by leaving him to go and work for the government in a special department set up to fight vampires. One Foot in the Grave continues the story 4 years later - Cat has now established her vampire hunting team and trained her men in the same way Bones taught her in the past. But no matter how good their training has been her team are still only humans and can't protect Cat when she finds herself being targeted by vampire assassins. Bones has also managed to track her down and she is forced to turn to him for help. The attraction between them is still strong and Bones is determined not to let Cat get away from him again.

Wow, what can I say about One Foot in the Grave? I absolutely loved the first book in the series but this on blew me away! I am head over heals crazy about Bones - yes his British slang doesn't sound natural to a Brit but it suits him & I love the way he talks, he is also sexy as hell and the scenes between him and Cat are scorching. I'd heard a lot about the infamous chapter 32 but boy did it surpass my expectations and I think it may have ruined me for other paranormal romances :o)

If you liked the first book in the series then I guarantee you'll enjoy this one even more. It had everything I loved about Halfway to the Grave and then some. I've already mentioned how HOT it is but it is also action packed and full of twists that will make Cat rethink everything she has ever been told. We are introduced to some great new characters - I really liked Cat's team members Tate, Juan, Dave and Cooper and am looking forward to seeing more of them in the series. I enjoyed watching their interactions with Cat and the way they all looked out for each other.

Although this is classed as paranormal romance I would consider it one of those books that crosses over with the urban fantasy series & would recommend it to fans of both genres. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book and am looking forward to seeing what is in store for Cat and Bones in the future. If you are new to the series then I'd strongly recommend starting with the first book as it really does need to be read in order to get the full back story between the main characters but this is definitely one of my favourite series and one not to be missed!
