Review:
Hope is Swift is a short story included in The Unkindest Tide and I think it's the first time we've had a Raj point of view story. Raj is a Prince of Cats and Tybalt's heir, he thought he would have decades before he was asked to take his rightful place as King but it's become increasingly obvious that Tybalt will be stepping down much sooner than expected.
This story is about Raj coming to terms with the ways his life is about to change but also about him trying to enjoy the last of his freedom. There were a few laugh out loud moments but it was also a little bittersweet when Raj finds himself in a sticky situation waiting to be rescued. I always love these additional insights into side characters from the series though and this was a very enjoyable extra.

Review: The Unkindest Tide - Seanan McGuire
When the Luidaeg—October "Toby" Daye's oldest and most dangerous ally—tells her the time has come for the Selkies to fulfill their side of the bargain, and that Toby must be a part of the process, Toby can't refuse. Literally. The Selkies aren't the only ones in debt to the Luidaeg, and Toby has to pay what she owes like anyone else. They will travel to the fabled Duchy of Ships and call a convocation of the Selkies, telling them to come and meet the Luidaeg's price...or face the consequences.
Of course, nothing is that simple. When Dianda Lorden's brother appears to arrest Dianda for treason against the Undersea, when a Selkie woman is stripped of her skin and then murdered, when everything is falling apart, that's when Toby will have to answer the real question of the hour.
Is she going to sink? Or is she going to swim?

Review:
Toby has been accumulating debts with The Luidaeg for almost as long as we've known her and now the time has come for her to pay up. The selkies have also been living on borrowed time since their ancestors massacred The Luidaeg's children to steal their skins, she allowed them to keep the skins but it was always a temporary thing and now everyone's debts are being called in and Toby will be forced to help the Luidaeg deal with her selkie problem.
When Toby, Tybalt, Quentin, Dean and Gillian travel with The Luidaeg to the Duchey of Ships for a final confrontation with the selkies their lives get complicated very quickly. This story has everything I want from this series and more, we get to visit a floating city to spend time with pirates, there are murders and treasonous plots, we get to meet another First and we finally find out The Luidaeg's plans for the selkies. This book has been a long time coming and since The Luidaeg is one of my favourite characters in the series I loved how much time we got to spend with her here.
I have a kind of love / hate thing going on with the selkies, on one hand they aren't the ones who murdered The Luidaeg's children and we can't hold people responsible for something a family member did generations ago, but at the same time The Luidaeg has been suffering the loss of her children for hundreds of years and every single selkie who wears a skin does so having chosen to continue her pain so that they could live for longer so they're not exactly innocent either. While The Luidaeg hates the selkies for everything they stand for she has also spend centuries watching over their families and it's obvious that there is some kind of attachment there too. I'm not going to give you any clues about the price they have to pay but I felt it was all quite fitting in the end and I was happy with the way it worked out.
Thirteen books in and this is still one of my favourite series, I absolutely love Toby and her motley crew of misfits and I can't wait to see what adventures they go on in the next instalment.

We've had quite a few October Daye world stories now from Patrick, Dianda and Tybalt's points of view, these stories aren't essential reading but they all give us background information into some of our favourite characters and I'd highly recommend them to fans of the series.
I found it really interesting to read a story from Simon's point of view, we have very good reasons to hate his character from the main books but we've been seeing a different side to him in some of these short stories. I enjoyed seeing him with Amandine and August (way back before the main series starts) and I have to admit I've started to almost feel sorry for him. He pays a high price here for his loyalty to Patrick and Dianda and that definitely starts to show some of his actions in a different light. I'm really curious to see where Seanan McGuire is going with this, I have a feeling we're going to see a lot more of Simon in the future.

This story follows on from events in Write in Water and Live in Brass and continues to fill in our knowledge of the early days of Patrick and Dianda's relationship. Patrick feels he has a score to settle with Evening after her actions in the previous story but when he goes to talk to her about it things don't go quite to plan. Dianda and Patrick are so cute together, it was really interesting to see more of Evening in action and I always love these early glimpses of Simon before life goes so terribly wrong for him but what I'm most curious about was the introduction of Dawn. Have we met her in the series already? I honestly can't remember her so I'm definitely left wondering why!

Review:
Suffer a Sea-Change is a novella included in Night and Silence that shows some of the story (and a little beyond) from the point of view of Toby's daughter Gillian. It's really hard to talk about what happens in this story without giving spoilers for Night and Silence so I'm going to keep this review pretty vague and I want to warn you not to read this before the full length book.
I've never really been that interested in Gillian's character, she's been estranged from Toby for so long and I'm not sure why but in my head she's always seemed really young even though she's now at college studying and probably about the same age as Quentin really. Night and Silence had some really interesting revelations about Toby's past and her relationship with Cliff and Gillian though so this was a perfect follow up and I really enjoyed getting the chance to see Toby through Gillian's eyes.
You can't really blame Gillian for being resentful, she was very young when Toby vanished and since Cliff believed she'd willingly run off and abandoned them he never tried to help mend their relationship when Toby returned, in fact he went out of his way to keep Toby out of their lives, so Gillian doesn't really have a lot of reason to trust Toby. I was glad that she seemed willing to think about things from Toby's point of view though and although there is a long way to go before Gillian will ever trust her mother I really hope we'll see them build bridges as the series continues. Whatever happens certain revelations are bound to have a big impact so it's going to be interesting to see what happens!

In the aftermath of Amandine's latest betrayal, October "Toby" Daye's fragile self-made family is on the verge of coming apart at the seams. Jazz can't sleep, Sylvester doesn't want to see her, and worst of all, Tybalt has withdrawn from her entirely, retreating into the Court of Cats as he tries to recover from his abduction. Toby is floundering, unable to help the people she loves most heal. She needs a distraction. She needs a quest.

Review:
Every time I'm convinced this series can't get any better Seanan McGuire writes a book like Night and Silence and proves me wrong! I have to admit I was nervous after reading the blurb and saw that not only are Toby and Tybalt having problems but also that Gillian is abducted again, I was a little bit worried this would feel like a rinse and repeat of stories we've had in this world before but I'm such a huge fan of this author and she's never steered me wrong before so I really should have more faith in her by now.
Seeing how distant Tybalt is was pretty heartbreaking but after everything Amandine put him through his withdrawal was understandable. That doesn't make it any easier to read but there was no way he'd carry on as normal after everything he's experienced. The man always knows how to make an entrance though and there has never been a time when he has let Toby down when she really needs him so you don't need to worry that he'll be absent for the entire book.
Things with Gillian are far more complicated. When Toby offered Gillian the Changeling's choice and reluctantly turned her human it broke her heart but she honestly believed it was what Gillian wanted and needed and she's kept her distance since then trying to respect Gillian's wishes. Toby mistakenly thought that leaving her alone would keep her safe but now she's missing Toby has no idea if the fae are involved. It's always been painful to see how much Toby has suffered because of her abduction, I've hated the way Cliff treats her for a long time now and I would really love to see her build some bridges with her daughter.
The story was everything I'd hoped for and gave all the characters I love most a chance to shine, May has a bigger role than usual, the Luideag steals the show as always, Quentin never fails to make me smile and of course I still love Tybalt no matter how damaged he is right now. There is plenty of action as Toby tries to track down Gillian and encounters some interesting new fae along the way and a totally game changing revelation has given me a new character to loathe but I can't say more about that because SPOILER so you'll just have to read the book to find out more (I guarantee you'll know exactly who I'm talking about once you have!).
Events in this book are going to have a huge impact as the series continues so I'm really looking forward to seeing how Toby copes with the latest developments in When Sorrows Come! This series is definitely one of my favourites and it's still going strong 12 books in.

This is another Tybalt story and it picks up immediately after the ending of Jealous in Honor. September has been put in danger because of her friendship with Tybalt and now it's up to him to save her. He's the only one who can give her back her freedom and reunite her with her husband but he's going to have to cross some uncomfortable lines to achieve his goal.

I love these Tybalt backstories, it's just so much fun learning about his life in Londinium many, many years before he met Toby. In this story Tybalt is under some pressure when Cyne returns, he knows she will stop at nothing to hurt Cailin but he is willing to do whatever it takes to protect his niece and his sister. This ends on quite a cliffhanger so I'm really glad I'm playing catch up with Patreon short stories and already had Quick in Quarrel to dive straight into!

We've had quite a few October Daye world stories now both from Patrick and Tybalt's points of view, these stories aren't essential reading but they all give us background information into some of our favourite characters and I'd highly recommend them to fans of the series.
If you've read the January Patreon story, Write in Water, then you'll recognise some of the events in this story except this time we see them from Dianda's POV instead of Patrick's. This gives us a nice glimpse into her life in Undersea and then takes us on land as she goes to a party King Gilad is holding in her honour. Although we've seen some of these events before I really enjoyed the chance to see Dianda's side of the big misunderstanding she has with Patrick. I think these two are adorable together and I love that Seanan McGuire is slowly filling in the details of their romance with these short stories. It's nice to get a glimpse of other familiar characters too, although some of that is a little bittersweet if you're a fan of the series because you'll already know what happens to them further down the line.

Live in Brass is a short story from Dianda's point of view that can be purchased from Seanan McGuire's Patreon Page. She posts a short story there every month, some standalone but a lot linked to her October Daye series, and you can receive them for as little as $1 each (there are other perks available for higher amounts but $1 is the minimum). We've had quite a few October Daye world stories now both from Patrick and Tybalt's points of view, these stories aren't essential reading but they all give us background information into some of our favourite characters and I'd highly recommend them to fans of the series.
If you've read the January Patreon story, Write in Water, then you'll recognise some of the events in this story except this time we see them from Dianda's POV instead of Patrick's.
