Review:
I'm still absolutely loving these illustrated editions of the Harry Potter series. There is just something so beautiful about these hardbacks and I can't wait to have the entire set on my shelves. I've seen some reviewers complaining that this book had less illustrations than the previous ones but I think that was bound to happen now that we're getting to the longer books in the series. I don't think the goal was ever to turn these into picture books, the idea is to add to the story with complimentary artwork so unless we want these hardbacks to be doorstops (or to have the remaining books split into two parts) then we're going to have to accept that not every page will have a picture.

We're all so used to visuals of the actors from the movies that they've pretty much become the characters in my head so I really enjoyed seeing Jim Kay's versions and the changes he's made. I'm just enjoying seeing the story with fresh eyes and could spend ages just looking at the illustrations as there is so much detail. You really do spot something different every time you flip through the book.

I've already reviewed the story of Goblet of Fire (you can read that review HERE) so I'm not going to go into detail again but this is still one of my favourite series and Jim Kay's illustrations have only added to that love.

I could have included hundreds of pictures with this review but I've tried to narrow it down to just a few favourites, you'll just have to buy the book if you want to see the rest!

Etsy Finds: Magnetic Bookmarks - HappyHelloCo

I love looking for new fandom sellers on Etsy, there are just so many amazing creators making items from bookmarks to candles and everything else you can possibly think of. I've brought from a few of them over the last few years but for some reason I've never got around to reviewing the products here on my blog. I thought it was about time I changed that so keep an eye out for some random Etsy Finds posts over the next few months. I'll start by posting about products I've purchased but I'll probably branch out onto items on my wish list later on.

Today I want to talk about the store HappyHelloCo. This shop sells the most adorable magnetic bookmarks from a lot of popular bookish fandoms but also related to TV shows and movies and all sorts of other cute designs. They've branched out into selling cute enamel pins, stickers and keychains too but I've not purchased any of those yet so I'm going to focus on the magnetic bookmarks today.

I've placed several orders with HappyHelloCo over the last few years and have been thrilled with all of the bookmarks I've received from them. I love magnetic bookmarks because you don't run the risk of them falling out of the book and losing your place but to be honest the bookmarks I've bought are almost too cute to stick inside a book so I love using them as shelf decorations too.

Anyone who knows me knows I'm a HUGE Potterhead so it won't surprise many people that I've been deseperately waiting for the Illustrated Edition of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire ever sine Prisoner of Azkaban published 2 years ago! The books are fabulous on their own but adding Jim Kay's gorgeous illustrations just makes them even better. What is The Most Expensive Book You Own?

I'm not sure if this really counts since it's technically more of a box set but without a doubt it's the most expensive set of books I own so I'm going to include it anyway - Harry Potter Page to Screen: The Complete Filmmaking Journey Collectors Edition.

I just realised I've not got around to reviewing this set yet but it really is gorgeous set & I love everything about it, especially the replica of the Monster book of Monsters!

What Book(s) Have You Shamelessly Devoured Many Times?

I could easily count the Harry Potter series for this sin too but I think the series I've actually read the most in the last few years would have to be Ilona Andrew's Hidden Legacy series. To be honest I reread all of Ilona and Gordon's books on a regular basis but when it comes to the Hidden Legacy books  I have literally been known to read the entire trilogy through twice in the space of a week!

What Book/Series Have You Neglected Over Sheer Laziness?

To be honest I'm pretty terrible at starting series and never getting around to finishing them so it's hard to pick just one LOL. It's not that I deliberately stop reading halfway through a series, I just get distracted by all the shiny new books that come along while I'm waiting for the next instalment and don't always remember to go back to them.

For this post I'll just talk about a few of the series that I really want to try and catch up with some time soon.

1. First we have Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunters I love these books so I'm not sure why it's taking me so long to read them but I still have quite a few books to read before I catch up. 
2. Next is J.D. Robb's In Death series, this is a HUGE series topping over 40 books already with at least 2 new books published every year so I worked out recently that reading one book a month it'll take me about four years to catch up. Quite intimidating for sure but I'm going to give it a good try LOL.
3. Terry Pratchett's Discworld series is a bit different to the others because I have already read most of these books over the years but I want to reread them to review them on my blog. I'm also kind of putting off the last few books that I haven't read yet because there will never be any new books written in this world and I kind of like the comfort of knowing that I have a couple saved up ready for when I really need them.
4. Last on the list is Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series, these books are so much fun to read so although I read the first 16 or so books before I started blogging I'm trying to slowly reread them to review on my blog.

What Books(s) Do You Bring Up When You Want To Sound Like An Intelligent Reader?

To be honest I really don't care what anyone else thinks about my reading choices, perhaps I did when I was younger but these days I read completely for pleasure and don't care what judgements others might choose to make.

I sometimes think I should tackle on of those "100 classics everyone should read before they die" lists but then I look at the lists and decide I'm not really that interested after all LOL. If something appeals to me then I'll pick it up, no matter what the genre but I think as long as people are reading then it's all good, whether they choose classics, graphic novels or anything in between.

LUST:

What Attributes Do You Find Most Attractive In Characters?

Ooh that's a difficult question because there are different things that draw me to different characters and what one author can pull off another will fail completely on. I think most of all I want to read books with characters I can relate to in some way, obviously we're not all witches and wizards like Harry, Ron and Hermione but whats so great about them is that apart from their magical abilities they're really quite normal, they still have the same insecurities, fears and weaknesses that we do and still have to deal with the same day to day issues on top of trying to save the world. I enjoy stories where I can imagine myself hanging out with the characters, I want to feel like if they walked off of the pages and into my front room we could be friends.

What Books Would You Most Like To Receive As a Gift?

I could write a huge list of books I'm saving up for or books that I'm desperately waiting to be published  but the biggest unicorn that I would LOVE to own a copy of has to be the limited edition hardcover of The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling. It's such a gorgeous set that comes with art prints and a lovely keepsake box & I think it would go perfectly with the rest of my Harry Potter collection. It's getting harder and harder to find though and the copies that I have seen are FAR outside of my price range but I live in hope so who knows, perhaps one day the book faeries will decide to leave a copy underneath my Christmas tree LOL.

WRATH:

What Author(s) Do You Have a Love/Hate Relationship With?

There are two authors who immediately spring to mind to answer this question, one is going to be a hugely unpopular choice and the other is an author who used to be one of my favourites so I still find it difficult to believe I'm including their name on this list.

So first we have Sarah J Maas (yes shocking I know!), I was actually a huge fan of Sarah's for a long time, I went to signings and met her twice and I would devour her books the minute I got my hands on them. She was an author I'd preorder immediately and get super excited about but it all started going horribly wrong when she completely rewrote Chaol's character in Queen of Shadows just because she had decided Rowan was a better fit for Aelin. I would have been bitter about that ship change no matter what but if she had written it better then I'd have gotten over my disappointment eventually.

As if that wasn't bad enough the next book she published was A Court of Mist and Fury which I HATED with the passion of a thousand suns. Now I know that is going to be a shockingly unpopular opinion because that series has so many fans but I absolutely hated everything about that book and I've not been able to pick up a book by Sarah J Maas since.  I just hate the way she is so fickle with her pairings, and how in one book certain characters are true mates but then a guy comes along that Sarah suddenly likes better so she has to rewrite history and give her characters personality transplants in order to fit square pegs into round holes. She has absolutely zero skill or subtlety about it and goes about the shift like a bull in a china shop. It's gutting because I did really love Rhys so if she'd paired him with anyone other than Feyre, or even split up Feyre and Tamlin without changing Tamlin into someone he wasn't, then I would have stayed a superfan. As it is I know I want to finish the Throne of Glass series eventually but I have very little enthusiasm left for the series or anything else Sarah J Maas may write in the future.

It actually pains me to say this but the second author on this list is Patricia Briggs. I have been a HUGE fan of the Mercy Thompson and Alpha & Omega books for years now, if you've been following this blog for any length of time you've probably heard me talking about them before because I've reread the books at least once a year for a long time now. I honestly thought this series would continue to be a favourite forever and I've always been so excited to get my hands on each new instalment.

But then along came Burn Bright and that book destroyed everything. Some of the things revealed in that book have totally ruined my opinion of both one of my most loved characters AND of Patricia Briggs herself. I know it's her world and they're her characters so she's entitled to do whatever she likes to them but this is some seriously messed up shit that I just can't deal with. Not after reading (and rereading again and again!) fourteen full length books (and multiple short stories!) set in this world without a single hint of what was coming. I don't think I've ever felt so betrayed, not even by Sarah J Maas which is really saying something! I hope that one day I'll recover from this enough to be able to enjoy the first fourteen books again but I don't think I'll ever be able to reread Burn Bright or any new books in this world which is utterly heartbreaking because they used to be one of the highlights of my reading year.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets House Editions - to buy or not to buy?

I'm sure EVERYONE must have seen the new Chamber of Secrets House covers that Bloomsbury are publishing this June. What I really want to know is what everyone thinks of the idea though?

I was one of the fans who was thrilled when they announced the Philosopher's Stone House covers, I was determined to only buy the Hufflepuff versions but they were so beautiful that I ended up buying the entire set of eight. No I can't tell you why I needed them all but they take such beautiful pics for bookstagram LOL. You can see some of the pics I took in this post I wrote last year and I have zero regrets for buying them, but.....

....it does mean that I now have a RIDICULOUS amount of copies of Philosopher's Stone, there's my original paperback, the hardback with the cover art designed by Jonny Duddle (I bought a box set of the whole series because I loved those covers so much), then my Spineless Classics poster which was made with the full text of the book, the gorgeous illustrated edition and now eight house covers. That's not including the kindle version and audiobook! So, let's just add that up quickly, I now have fourteen - YES, FOURTEEN!!! - copies of Philosopher's Stone! Yup, I definitely have a problem LOL.

And that leads me to my dilemma when it comes to the House editions of Chamber of Secrets (and Bloomsbury have confirmed there will be House editions for the entire seven book series). I would love to have the entire series in Hufflepuff colours, but at the same time I know me and I know what will happen if I start buying more of these books. I'm going to end up with all the houses just like I did with Philosopher's Stone. I can justify having a paperback, hardback, kindle and audiobook for all seven books. I can justify buying the illustrated editions as they're released because Jim Kay's illustrations add so much depth to the stories. Luckily I don't have to justify buying more Spineless Classics posters because they only made the first book (and hallelujah for that because all my wall space is taken up with bookcases and I have no room for more posters LOL).

What I can't justify is buying 8 more copies of every book, I can't do it financially, I don't have enough shelf space and to be honest I feel like they're starting to take advantage of fans at this point. Let's look at the figures again, if I buy them all I'd end up with 14 copies of Philosopher's Stone (tick), and 13 copies of the other six books in the series. That's NINETY-TWO copies of seven stories! And we're not even talking about the numerous copies of the Hogwarts Library, the scripts for the Cursed Child play and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them movie and dozens of books about the making of the movies, the characters, the beasts, the costumes, the book and model sets and all the other HP world books I've already bought over the years.

Putting the Harry Potter logo on ANYTHING has pretty much become a license to print money these days. I know I'm not the only crazy Potterhead who spends far too much money on HP merch in all it's shapes and forms - over half the Christmas presents I received this year were HP related and I've run out of space in my dedicated HP cabinet to even put all the stuff I own! - but there comes a point where you have to try and start drawing a line and I'm trying to convince myself to draw the line at these new House editions.

They're just so pretty.....

I'm pretty much doomed to failure because I'm already trying to talk myself into just buying the Hufflepuff versions so I'll have them as a set. What remains to be seen is if I can stick with just the Hufflepuff ones because if I buy the whole set of Chamber of Secrets then I will HAVE to buy the rest of the series as they release over the next five years. The collector in me won't allow for anything else! And this is why it sucks to be a book hoarder LOL.

Review:
It's no secret I'm a crazy Potterhead, I have a ridiculously large collection of books and merchandise but there is no doubt that these gorgeous illustrated editions are some of my favourite items. Jim Kay's gorgeous artwork just adds a whole new level to J.K. Rowling's incredible stories and I can't wait to have the whole collection complete.

As with the previous illustrated editions this is a fantastic quality hardback with glossy pages and illustrations on pretty much every page. The text is a good size and easy to read and I love the way the illustrations vary from tiny little pictures surrounded by text, to subtle background images with text over the top, right through to beautiful full double page spreads. This book in particular has images of Crookshanks and Scabbers scattered throughout which was a fantastic detail (if you remember Crookshanks spends a lot of time chasing Scabbers in this story!).

I've already reviewed the story of Prisoner of Azkaban (you can read that review HERE) so I'm not going to go into detail again but this is still one of my favourite books of the series and Jim Kay's illustrations have only added to that love.

I could have included hundreds of pictures with this review but I've tried to narrow it down to just a few favourites, you'll just have to buy the book if you want to see the rest!

Review: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone 20th Anniversary House Editions

I fell in love with the gorgeous new house editions of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone the minute I saw them but I promised myself I'd only buy the two Hufflepuff ones because lets face it who really needs 13 copies of one book (I already own a paperback, hardback, ebook and audiobook plus the illustrated edition!). Well my resolve lasted all of one day because the minute my Hufflepuff ones arrived they were so beautiful that I just HAD to have the set!

Yes, I'm a total Potterhead but I'm not even sorry - just look at them! They were too pretty for my own good! The hardbacks are totally stunning but I love the bright covers on the paperbacks too. Both versions of the books contain the same extra content (although each house is different) so if you bought a set of either the hardbacks or the paperbacks you'd get all the extra material available.

Each edition has the house crest on the front and again inside with a list of the house attributes (dedication, patience and loyalty in the case of Hufflepuff) and then includes background information on the house and it's founder, proud house moments, details of the house relic, livery and ghost, a black and white portrait of the founder and a map of Hogwarts. Then there is the full version of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone followed by some more additional information at the back of the book about the Sorting Ceremony, the House common room, memorable students and alumni, the current Head of House and the House Cup. I think most (if not all) of this information is probably already available on the Pottermore website but I like having it all in one place.

I can't believe it's been 20 years since Philosopher's Stone was first published but these books are a beautiful way to commemorate the occasion!

Today's topic is Top Ten Most Anticipated Releases for the Second Half of 2017. (Yes I realise I'm posting this on a Wednesday but I already had something scheduled for yesterday!)

1. Wildfire - Ilona Andrews - This is kind of a cheat since I have an arc so I've already read it (twice!) but I'm such a fangirl of everything Ilona and Gordon write and this series is my favourite so I HAD to include it!
2. Silver Silence - Nalini Singh - I'd also include Archangel's Viper on this list because I adore both the Psy-Changeling and the Guild Hunter series.
3. The Scorpion Trap - Pippa DaCosta - If you like the sound of Egyptian gods roaming around modern day New York then you HAVE to give this series a try!
4. Godsgrave - Jay Kristoff - Nevernight was one of my favourite books last year so this one was a no brainer, I can't wait for more of Mia and Mr Kindly's adventures.
5. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Illustrated Edition - J.K. Rowling & Jim Kay - I've read this whole series a million times but it'll never be too many and these illustrated editions are absolutely gorgeous.
6. The Language of Thorns - Leigh Bardugo - I love the Grisha world so I'm excited to go back to it with this collection of short stories. I'm also really looking forward to her upcoming superhero book Wonder Woman: War Bringer.
7. Renegades - Marissa Meyer - I'm really excited we're seeing a trend of superhero books this year, I've enjoyed everything else Marissa Meyer has written so I have very high hopes for this new duology.
8. Artemis - Andy Weir - I loved The Martian so Artemis jumped to the top of my wish list the minute I heard about it.
9. La Belle Sauvage - Philip Pullman - I read the Dark Materials series when it was first released, in fact I've reread it too many times to count over the years so I'm thrilled he's decided to return to this world.
10. Forest of a Thousand Lanterns - Julie C Dao - Not only is the cover for this one beautiful but it's also described as "The Wrath and the Dawn meets Snow White and the Huntsman in this dark and mystical East Asian fantasy reimagining of The Evil Queen legend" and I can't possibly resist a blurb like that!

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone gets a 20th Anniversary Makeover with Brand New House Covers!

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone Bloomsbury UK are publishing 8 brand new editions of the book with gorgeous new covers inspired by the four Hogwarts houses.

The hardback versions are black with colourful crests and sprayed edges to match the house scarves:

While the paperbacks are much brighter with a black house crest and edges sprayed in a single colour:

Aren't they beautiful? I honestly can't decide whether I like the hardback or paperback versions more and I'm seriously tempted to add all 8 versions to my wish list but I just can't justify buying 8 more copies of a book I already own five times LOL.

I have to show my House Pride and buy the Hufflepuff versions though! I mean, just look how pretty they are!
