Review: The Bear's Forever Mate - Vivian Arend

HE’S GOT THE PERFECT MATE IN MIND, FOR FIVE YEARS FROM NOW...

Cooper Borealis is fully on board with the concept of fated mates. Except mating the woman he wants—his tempting, complicated, human secretary—is not an option. Or not yet anyway. So he’ll use a loophole to keep the vow he made to his brothers, mating fever be damned. He’ll be with Amber Myawayan at the place and time of his choosing.

Amber has spent the past two years in the north looking for her missing brother—and falling in love with the big, growly polar bear at the helm of Borealis Gems. More than once, she’s caught him looking at her with hungry shifter eyes. But getting him to admit it? Ha! Luckily, mating fever is a thing, and she’s happy to get involved as nature forces the issue to the forefront.

But when their mating bond is unexpectedly blocked, Amber and Cooper find themselves in a race against time. She needs to track down her brother while somehow proving she’s tough enough to be with her favourite bear. And Cooper plans to protect her at all costs, even if it means secretly stifling his stubborn shifter side.

Somewhere in the wilderness, they’ll find the answer…or lose their chance at forever.

Review:
In this third, and final, book in the Borealis Bears Trilogy Grandfather Giles turns his attention to his oldest grandson. Cooper already has his mate picked out, he just doesn't think the timing is right to settle down and start a family. Cooper is already courting Amber but in his own, very slow, way because she's a human who only recently found out about the existence of shifters and he's hoping that as she starts to trust him she'll eventually develop stronger feelings. What he doesn't realise is that Amber already wants him and when the two end up stranded together in the wilderness it might just be the push they needed.

I've been really looking forward to Cooper and Amber's story. I've loved all of the brothers but Cooper has always been a bit of a mystery figure but he's one who obviously cares about his family and looks out for his younger brothers. It turns out that both Cooper and his inner bear are very stubborn and although they've both chosen Amber neither of them are keen to start the mating dance any time soon.

Amber has two goals, one is to find her missing brother and the other is to win Cooper's heart. When the chance comes along to achieve the first she's thrilled when Cooper volunteers to join her on her journey into the wilderness. Amber will do whatever it takes to convince Cooper she's ready for the mating but if she doesn't work quickly they may both run out of time.

This was a brilliant end to the trilogy, Grandfather Giles may be a meddling old man but it's been clear from the start that he has his grandson's best interests at heart and it looks like he isn't the only family member who is capable of setting long term plans in motion. It's been great to see all three couples find happiness and I can't help hoping that we may see further books set in this world that give us the chance to catch up with them all a few years down the line.

Review: Magical Midlife Madness - K.F. Breene

A Paranormal Women's Fiction novel with a bit of class, and a lot of sass, for anyone who feels like age is just a number!

"Happily Ever After" wasn't supposed to come with a do-over option. But when my husband of twenty years packs up and heads for greener pastures and my son leaves for college, that's exactly what my life becomes.

Do-over.

This time, though, I plan to do things differently. Age is just a number, after all, and at forty I'm ready to carve my own path.

Eager for a fresh start, I make a somewhat unorthodox decision and move to a tiny town in the Sierra foothills. I'll be taking care of a centuries old house that called to me when I was a kid. It's just temporary, I tell myself. It'll just be for a while.

That is, until I learn what the house really is, something I never could've imagined.

Thankfully forty isn't too old to start an adventure, because that's exactly what I do. A very dangerous adventure that will change my life forever. I have a chance to start again, and this time, I make the rules.

Review:
Magical Midlife Madness is the first book in K.F. Breene's new series staring 40 year old Jessie, a divorced mum whose son has left home for college, who is now ready to start living life on her own terms. Jessie spent the last 18 years caring for her family and putting everyone else's needs above her own so she thinks its about time she had her own adventure. While Jessie is trying to figure out what she wants to do with her life she's taken a job as the caretaker at a mansion in a tiny mountain town. She's expecting a relaxing break from reality but ends up getting a lot more than she bargained for.

So many heroines are in their 20s so it was really nice to come across one who has lived a little, Jessie may not be as fit as she once was and she may have a few insecurities but she's also had a good life and comes with a wealth of experience. It stands her in good stead when she's thrown into the middle of a supernatural community full of people who are used to hiding in plain sight. I loved how confident Jessie is, she knows exactly what she wants and she's willing to work to achieve her goals.

The town is full of fun, quirky characters and there was so much humour in this story. I can't wait to see where things go as Jessie learns more about the community and we start to see how the house magic works. I can already tell this is going to be a brilliant series but that comes as no surprise when it's written by K.F. Breene!

Review:
Charlotte and Dennis Mira have become almost surrogate parents to Eve so it's no wonder she's the first person they call when Dennis is attacked and his cousin is kidnapped. Eve doesn't usually work kidnapping cases but as time goes by with no ransom notice they all become increasingly concerned that things are about to take a darker turn. Edward Mira is a retired judge and former senator, a powerful man with a lot of enemies to choose from and the more digging Eve does the less she likes him. As the bodies start piling up Eve uncovers some dark secrets from Edwards past and starts to wonder if some victims are only getting exactly what they deserve.

I love the Miras so I had a bit of a panic when Dennis was attacked and knocked unconscious, I would have been seriously unhappy if anything worse had happened to him! Luckily all the characters I care about are fine and as far as Edward Mira is concerned he deserves whatever punishment anyone cares to throw in his direction. It's not often I'm rooting for the murderer but this was definitely one of those times. Logically I know taking the law into your own hands isn't a good thing but I find it hard to blame them in these circumstances. I just wish Eve had found them sooner (or not at all!) so that they wouldn't be facing years in prison.

There was a lot of humour in this book as Peabody and Eve discuss the obsession a lot of old, rich men have with young, beautiful women but this story also tore at my heart imagining what the real victims of this situation had suffered. I like that Eve is more able to open up about her own past now too, she's had some great heart to hearts recently with Peabody and here she has one with Dennis too. It's nice to see how close she has become to Charlotte and Dennis and I'm glad the older couple have kind of unofficially adopted both Eve and Roarke. There is a lot in this series about found families and I think that's an important message.

Blog Tour: A Heart of Blood and Ashes - Milla Vane

I was lucky enough to receive a review copy of A Heart of Blood and Ashes, the first book in Milla Vane's new fantasy romance series, and I admit it's early to say this but I can pretty much guarantee it earned a spot in my top books of 2020 list. This was EVERYTHING I want from a fantasy romance and I loved every minute of it. I'll be posting my full review later today but trust me this is a book you NEED to add to your to read pile!

Let me give you a bit more information about the book (including a fab excerpt) to help persuade you!

A generation past, the western realms were embroiled in endless war. Then the Destroyer came. From the blood and ashes he left behind, a tenuous alliance rose between the barbarian riders of Parsathe and the walled kingdoms of the south. That alliance is all that stands against the return of an ancient evil--until the barbarian king and queen are slain in an act of bloody betrayal.

Though forbidden by the alliance council to kill the corrupt king responsible for his parents' murders, Maddek vows to avenge them, even if it costs him the Parsathean crown. But when he learns it was the king's daughter who lured his parents to their deaths, the barbarian warrior is determined to make her pay.

Yet the woman Maddek captures is not what he expected. Though the last in a line of legendary warrior-queens, Yvenne is small and weak, and the sharpest weapons she wields are her mind and her tongue. Even more surprising is the marriage she proposes to unite them in their goals and to claim their thrones--because her desire for vengeance against her father burns even hotter than his own...

EXCERPT:

“Our queen and king and two Dragons murdered.” A dozen warriors, who were also mothers and fathers, sons and daughters. Maddek stopped pacing, his chest a ragged ache, his family’s silver crest burning around his thumb. “How can I let this remain unavenged? I cannot.”

“You must.”

“The alliance has run its course if this corruption and betrayal can stand and the council stands with it, because nothing will stand if our allies cut our legs out from beneath us.”

“And what would you put in the alliance’s place? Warriors are stronger when they stand together—and Parsathe is stronger if we stand with the southern realms. Even if one of those realms is rotten.”

“Only one? With Aezil on Rugus’s throne, Zhalen’s rot will not be contained within Syssia—and some say that Aezil is worse than his father.” Not only murdering his cousin to gain his throne, but also studying dark magics and seeking power through blood sacrifice. “These are the kings we stand with?”

“If we must,” Nayil replied. “Kings rise and fall. It is not for them that we fight, but for the people who live under their rule.”

That was truth. So was Maddek’s reply. “Then it would be better for all if I took Zhalen’s head.”

“And if your vengeance destroys the alliance—”

“Then we will remake it anew.”

For a long moment, only another heavy sigh was Nayil’s response. Then the older man said, “You will be my king, Maddek. I hear your words—and I hope you hear mine when I advise you not to make any decisions in grief and rage. If you must vow to avenge them, I advise that you also do not speak an oath in haste. Silver-fingered Rani has taken your parents, so nothing can change their course; only yours can be determined now.”

And his course might determine the course of every Parsathean. Maddek inclined his head. Though his heart yearned for blood, he could not deny the wisdom of the man’s words.

“Your journey home will pass through another full turn of the moon,” Nayil continued. “Use that time to reflect upon the path you will take. That is my advice to you: think hard and well upon your next steps.”

“I can promise that.” Another harsh laugh escaped him. “I know not how I will think of anything else.”

“Nor I. I have not these many days and nights.” A rueful smile curved Nayil’s thin mouth before a grave weariness flattened his expression again. “When you are Ran, you will speak for every Parsathean. Perhaps you should let every Parsathean guide your voice—for Ran Ashev and Ran Marek were not only your parents but also our queen and king. When we gather, we can tell our brothers and sisters what befell them. We can tell them of the council’s investigation and of the lies we suspect. We will tell them the consequences of vengeance and the threat of the Destroyer. If they demand blood, I will stand with you.”

That was also wise advice. “And if there is not a consensus?”

“Then it is your place as Ran to speak for us. We will abide by your decision. So think upon what it must be. Think upon it as a son and as a king.”

He would try. But he was not a king yet. Only a warrior.

Now his warrior’s heart grieved anew. His parents, too, had been warriors—and every warrior knew death would one day come. If not by steel, then by claw or plague, or the ravages of age. Countless dangers could have befallen his parents. Before Maddek had arrived in Ephorn, he hadn’t known what danger it had been, but he could have accepted any of them.

He could not accept treachery and dishonor.

And Maddek had believed that in the council’s haste to send word, they simply forgot to tell the cause of his parents’ deaths to the Tolehi captain who’d borne the message. But now Maddek understood.
If the queen and king had sickened, or been attacked by bandits, or become a meal for the fanged beasts that stalked the Burning Plains, such information would have been passed along, too. But the council had not told Maddek what Zhalen had done because they had not wanted him to charge north with the Parsathean army at his back and with vengeance burning in his heart.

Yet vengeance burned hot, anyway—and only one thought stoked the furnace of his mind.

Someone would pay.

Review: Long Lost - Lexi Blake

A stolen past

The only thing Tucker remembers of his past is pain. Used in a doctor’s evil experiments, his memories and identity were erased, and his freedom taken. He believed his nightmare was over when he was liberated by the men and women of McKay-Taggart, until he heard the name Steven Reasor. The idea that he could have been involved in the terrible experiments that cost his “brothers” everything crushed him. A desperate attempt to force him to remember the truth almost cost him his life. Now his world is in chaos and his only path to finally uncover the truth and atone for his sins leads to Veronica Croft.

A painful present

Veronica “Roni” Croft knew Dr. Steven Reasor was bad for her, but she also saw a side of the man that no one else knew. Even as she began to believe their employer was hiding something sinister, she was drawn to him like a moth to a flame. Their affair was passionate and intense, but also fraught with danger. When he disappeared under mysterious circumstances, she took her first chance to run and never looked back. She has stayed hidden ever since, running from forces she knows are too powerful to overcome. But now the man she believed was dead, the man she mourned, has returned and needs her help.

A dangerous future

As Tucker and Roni unravel the secrets of his past, a dark force rises and threatens to destroy them. Their only chance for survival will require them to join forces with the Lost Boys’ worst enemy. Only together can they finally unlock Tucker’s past. But as Tucker’s memories begin to come back, will it free them both or tear them apart forever?

Review:
I've been waiting for Tucker's story ever since I first started reading about the Lost Boys. He's always been so protective of his brothers, proven at the end of the last book when he sacrificed himself so that one of their wives wouldn't be hurt, but there have also been hints at a much darker side to his past where he might even have been involved in the early experiments they were used in. He still has no memory of his past thanks to Dr Hope's mind wiping drugs but rumours that he might at one point have been her right hand man are driving him insane. He can't bear the thought that he might have been responsible for anyone else's suffering so when Levi Green offered him an experimental cure he took it.

After taking the cure Tucker spent two weeks in a coma while his brothers continued their desperate search for answers. The only lead they have is Roni, a woman who once worked as an intern for Hope but who has been in hiding for the last few years. Roni knew Tucker when he was Steven Reasor and she's the only one who might be able to help him figure out how involved he was in Hope's experiments. Roni remembers two very different sides to Steven, there was the guy at work who most people were terrified of, and the one she knew privately and had a brief but intense affair with. When she meets Tucker she discovers yet another side to his personality she's not quite sure what to make of him.

Tucker may not remember the time he spent with Roni but for years he has dreamed of her face and he knows she was important to him. Now the two of them, along with the rest of the Lost Boys, are desperately trying to piece everything together so they can all learn their true identities and hopefully get their lives back. But their enemies are circling and as Tucker's memories start to return it places them in more danger than ever before.

This series is just getting better and better with each and every book. Tucker is easily my favourite of the Lost Boys and it was so good to see him finally figure out exactly what had happened before his mind was wiped. There were some really heartfelt moments in this book between him and his brothers and I loved the romance between him and Roni. Roni had very good reasons for being wary of Tucker and the rest of the team but she's a fighter so with her mother's support she does her best to help them all. I can't stand Levi so I'm really hoping we'll see him brought down soon, he's been causing trouble for the team for far too long so I'd be very happy to see Ezra or Solo put a bullet in him in the next book (fingers crossed!).

Excerpt:

Veronica took a deep breath. “The first time you kissed me we were at the lab. It was after hours and I’d stayed behind because I was finishing up some reports for Dr. Walsh. There were a couple of doctors there who thought they could mess around with me. One in particular made a nuisance of himself. He was married but he thought the younger women were all fair game. That night he’d stayed behind, too, and he was coming on to me. Hard. You walked in and he pretty much peed himself after you were done with him.”

“Did I hurt him?”

His question came out measured so she couldn’t tell if he wanted the answer to be yes or no.

“Not physically, but he didn’t touch me again. Anyway, afterward you stayed while I finished up. You said you wanted to walk me out to my car. I thanked you and we ended up talking.” She could remember how grateful she’d been to not be left alone. “It was the first time I saw you as something other than the ambitious doctor who handled things for McDonald. You stayed way longer than you had planned, and I felt bad for keeping you. You told me it was okay because it might be the only good thing you’d done for anyone in months. I don’t know what made me do it, but I went up on my tiptoes and kissed you. It wasn’t much. It was barely two seconds. When I moved back, you told me that wasn’t a kiss. You asked me if you could show me what a kiss was. And you did.”

He’d been careful with her, making sure she was all right.

Rather like he’d explained he would be now. He’d been careful right up until he’d been sure she was with him and then he’d taken over. Then he’d taken her someplace she’d never been before.

“Show me.”

She came out of the memory at the sound of his command. Show me. That was what he’d said to her that night.

She could come out of the memory because it was hers. That moment was there in her brain and she could call on it for the rest of her life. It was something so personal. Her memories were the sum of her soul. It struck her forcibly what he’d lost. What she’d lost. That memory had truly been theirs, a shared history that should have connected them for the rest of their lives.

Now she was the only one who knew what it had felt like that night. He was right there. He was standing in front of her asking for that connection again.

She went up on her toes. “Thank you. I didn’t want him near me, but I don’t feel the same way about you.” She let her lips brush his, the bare meeting of flesh that came from a woman who wasn’t sure of what she’d wanted then. Of what she wanted now. “And then you shook your head.”

Tucker shook his head and took the beer from her hand. He set it on the ledge and turned back to her. “Oh, that wasn’t a kiss. Let me show you how I kiss. Will you let me kiss you, Roni? I think about kissing you all the time.”

So close to what he’d actually said. She would take it. “Yes. Please kiss me.”

The air seemed to go out of the room and her vision focused in on him. It was like the rest of the world fell away. It was exactly as it had been that first night with him. Something had fallen into place when he’d looked at her and she’d known nothing would be the same.

If he kissed her again, they would have that connection they’d lost.

His hand went around the nape of her neck, sending a delicious warmth down her spine. He pulled her slightly, drawing her close in an easy show of strength. He brought their bodies together and her breasts brushed against his chest. His free hand wrapped around her waist and she took a moment to look into his eyes.

They were the clearest blue. Something about his eyes had always dragged her in. Even when they were cold, even when no one else had been able to see the emotion behind them, she hadn’t been fooled.

“I want to believe. But I don’t want to want to believe,” she said quietly.

“Because it would be easier if I was the bastard you’ve spent years believing I was. I know. Roni, I can’t imagine I was easy to care for then. I’m not easy now. But for however long we get together I want to try to be with you. We can take it slow and find a way to be friends again.”

She sighed at the thought because he was going to pull away and that was the last thing she wanted. Now that she was here and alone with him, she knew she couldn’t lose the chance to explore this side of the man. “We were never friends.”

She moved in and kissed him. It wasn’t what had happened that night, but that was all right. They were making a new memory, one no one could take away from them. It might all go to hell tomorrow, but she would kiss the father of her child again. She would have this new memory of him.

Review: Moontangled - Stephanie Burgis

Take one ambitious politician and one determined magician with wildly different aims for their next meeting.

Add a secret betrothal, a family scandal, and a heaping of dangerous fey magic in an enchanted wood...and watch the sparks fly!

For just one moonlit, memorable night, Thornfell College of Magic has flung open its doors, inviting guests from around the nation to an outdoor ball intended to introduce the first-ever class of women magicians to society...but one magician and one invited guest have far more pressing goals of their own for the night.

Quietly brilliant Juliana Banks is determined to win back the affections of her secret fiancée, rising politician Caroline Fennell, who has become inexplicably distant. If Juliana needs to use magic to get her stubborn fiancée to pay her attention...well, then, as the top student in her class, she is more than ready to take on that challenge!

Unbeknownst to Juliana, though, Caroline plans to nobly sacrifice their betrothal for Juliana's own sake - and no one has ever accused iron-willed Caroline Fennell of being easy to deter from any goal.

Their path to mutual happiness may seem tangled beyond repair...but when they enter the fey-ruled woods that border Thornfell College, these two determined women will find all of their plans upended in a night of unexpected and magical possibilities.

Review:
We've met both Juliana and Caroline before so I'd highly recommend reading the previous books in the series before this novella so that you're familiar with their history. Caroline is an aspiring politician with a bright future ahead of her but only if she follows the tradition of marrying a gentleman magician. The slight hitch in that is that she is madly in love with Juliana and the two are secretly engaged. Juliana was one of the first students to join the first magic school for women, the Thornfell College of Magic. Juliana is sure that if she can just pass her exams and officially be recognised as a magician then her marriage to Caroline can go ahead without ruining Caroline's political chances.

A recent scandal has caused Caroline to start pulling away from Juliana though, so just when they're getting close to achieving their dreams it looks like their relationship may be about to fall apart. Juliana is determined to get their relationship back on track but Caroline is trying to protect Juliana's reputation by keeping her distance. One magical night along with one tricky fae and they will either lose each other forever or find their way back to one another.

I'm so happy that Stephanie Burgis decided to give Juliana and Caroline their own story. I've been rooting for the young couple ever since they were first introduced so it was sad to see their respective careers getting in the way of their relationship. Luckily they're both fighters and once they both figure out what is really important nothing is going to change their minds. Juliana and Caroline are a pretty adorable couple but it was also nice to see how supportive Juliana's classmates as well as her teachers are of their relationship.

Writing for Comfort and Joy – a guest post by Stephanie Burgis

Eleven years ago, just after I’d sold my first three books and had my first baby, I signed up for an online marketing course. Sadly, with a brand-new baby in my arms (almost non-stop!) and an average of four hours of sleep on a good night, I ended up dropping out of that course after just a few sessions…but the very first worksheet I filled out for it included a question that changed my whole career.

The question was: What is your mission statement as a writer?

Honestly, that would have been a challenging question to answer even if I hadn’t been sleep-deprived and hormonal at the time! But I finally figured out the true answer…and ever since, I’ve come back to it again and again. It’s formed the true north on my internal compass every time I’ve ever needed to figure out which projects I should work on next.

I want to write books that provide escape, comfort, fun and empowerment for my readers.

It’s a simple truth, but for me, it’s been a powerful one – and it’s never been more relevant than with my Harwood Spellbook series, which I first sank into as my own escape when I was feeling overwhelmed with despair about real-world politics.

Snowspelled, Spellswept, Thornbound, and now Moontangled, too, are all stories set in my world of 19th-century Angland, which is ruled by a powerful Boudiccate of women. They’ve traditionally left magic to the gentlemen…but of course, even when gender binaries are flipped, they’re still not good for everybody. So a succession of fabulous, strong-minded heroines have stepped forward in my Harwood Spellbook stories to question all of those established certainties in a series of romantic fantasy adventures full of elves, trolls, dangerous fey, comedy, and - of course! - sweeping and joyful romance, every time.

The characters of Juliana Banks and Caroline Fennell first appeared in Snowspelled and Thornbound as a couple whose secret betrothal inspired the creation of Cassandra Harwood’s groundbreaking Thornfell College of Magic for Young Women. They were originally intended to be side characters, but I absolutely fell in love with them both as their arc progressed behind the scenes of Cassandra’s story - and over and over again, I heard from readers who wanted to read Juliana and Caroline’s story.

I knew from the beginning that they both needed and deserved a happy ending. I also knew, though, that two such strong-minded and brilliant women, with different but equal skills in their own areas (magic and politics, respectively) were certain to strike sparks at some point in their relationship – so my only remaining question was: where would be the most fun setting for those unresolved differences to finally explode?

Why, in the midst of a magical outdoor ball, of course! It’s full of fabulous dresses, literal fireworks, and an enchanted woods where powerful fey lurk off the established paths.

I had so much fun tossing Caroline and Juliana off their own safely established path and into a wildly romantic adventure that tests their relationship and all of their astonishing skills as well. I really hope my readers will have fun reading about it, too!

Over and over again in my life, I’ve been saved in my own darkest times by the books that have given me comfort, joy, escape when I needed it, and a sense of hope.

My greatest hope for my own books is that they can give those same gifts to my readers.

Review: Thornbound - Stephanie Burgis

Cassandra Harwood scandalized her nation when she became the first woman magician in Angland. Now, she's ready to teach a whole new generation of bright young women at her radical new school, the Thornfell College of Magic…

Until a sinister fey altar is discovered in the school library, the ruling Boudiccate sends a delegation to shut down Thornfell, and Cassandra’s own husband is torn away from her.

As malevolent vines slither in from the forest and ruthless politicians scheme against her, Cassandra must fight the greatest battle of her life to save her love, her school, and the future of the young women of Angland.

Review:
Thornbound is the second book in the Harwood Spellbook series by Stephanie Burgis and we get to see Cassandra fulfilling her dreams as she opens the door to her new school for female magicians, the Thornfell College of Magic. Cassandra has had a lot of support from her family and her husband to open the school but it quickly becomes clear that a lot of people in positions of power are not happy with her attempting to change the status quo. It's so engrained in society that women are politicians while men are magicians and people are worried that rocking the boat with this new college will have all kinds of implications for the future.

Cassandra has never been one to back down from a challenge but when the Boudiccate send a team of inspectors who are essentially looking for excuses to shut down the college she knows she's really up against it. Then a sinister fae altar is found in the school library proving that someone has been dabbling in forbidden magic, and Cassandra's husband goes missing she starts to wonder if her own dreams are costing the ones she loves a price that she's not willing to pay.

I'm really enjoying this series and I hope that we're going to see more of Cassandra as well as the staff and students at Thornfell College in the future, I'm sure there are all kinds of adventures they could get up to! I think what I like most about this series is how it turns rules of society as we know them on their head, it's the men who have to watch their reputations as being alone with a woman could ruin their reputations and it its the women who have most of the power. But while it's fun to see that switch up I also like the way Cassandra and her students are challenging societal norms to follow their dreams. We've seen Cassandra and her brother both make choices that are looked down on from some quarters but they never gave up and now they're giving a whole new generation the ability to follow in their footsteps.

This series is brilliantly written with inspiring characters and a fun magical setting. Adding in the tricky Fae only adds to the excitement as you really never know what one of them will try next, especially if they're making dodgy bargains with people.

Review: Spellswept - Stephanie Burgis

In the world of the Harwood Spellbook, 19th-century Angland is ruled by a powerful group of women known as the Boudiccate - but in order to become a member of that elite group, any ambitious young politician must satisfy tradition by taking a gentleman mage for her husband.

Amy Standish is a born politician...but Jonathan Harwood is her greatest temptation. On the night of the Harwoods' Spring Solstice Ball, in an underwater ballroom full of sparkling fey lights and danger, Amy will have to fight the greatest political battle of her life to win a family and a future that she could never have imagined.

It will take an entirely unexpected kind of magic to keep everything from crashing down around her.

Review:
Amy is an orphan but she managed to earn a job as personal assistant to Miranda Harwood, a respected member of the Angland parliament. As she's a natural politician it is expected that Amy will follow in her mentor's footsteps and join the Boudiccate but to do that first she must marry a respected magician. Tonight at the Harwood's Spring Solstice Ball she is expected to announce her engagement but really her heart is set on the one man she can never have, Miranda's son Jonathan. It would be a respectable match if only Jonathan hadn't refused to train as a magician, instead preferring to focus his studies on history. Now Amy needs to decide whether to follow her head or her heart, or perhaps she can figure out a way to get everything she's ever wanted.

Although Spellswept is technically a prequel to the Harwood Spellbook series I actually read it after reading the first book, Snowspelled, and I think I enjoyed it all the more because I was already familiar with the characters involved. It was lovely to see the beginning of Amy and Jonathan's relationship first hand and I also really enjoyed getting to meet a teenage version of Cassandra. I love the sibling relationship between Jonathan and Cassandra, he is so protective of his sister and a lot of the life choices he's made become much clearer when Amy discovers a huge secret that Cassandra has been keeping.

Stephanie Burgis has created a really fun world for her historical fantasy series, one where the sensible women are in charge of the government while the more whimsical and emotional men are free to pursue careers as magicians. The gender lines are firmly drawn but the complete opposite to what we're used to and it's really refreshing to see such a different take on society.
