Review:

I really enjoyed Darkness Becomes Her so was looking forward to reading A Beautiful Evil, I have found that I've been disappointed by quite a few sequels recently though so was a bit nervous that this wouldn't live up to my expectations.  I shouldn't have worried though because if anything Kelly Keaton's second novel was even better than the first.  This really is a fantastic series and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next.  If you're new to the series but looking for something unusual in the YA paranormal market then I'd highly recommend checking out Darkness Becomes Her, I love the fact that the author has focused on Greek mythology and come up with something completely different to anything else I've read.  This series does need to be read in order though and my review will include a major spoiler for the first book so you might not want to go any further unless you've already read it.

A Beautiful Evil picks up the story just after the ending of the first book.  Ari is trying to come to terms with the fact that she is a descendant of Medusa and that she is turning into a gorgon.  She is scared to learn to use her new abilities but if she wants to have a hope of rescuing Violet from Athena then she is going to have to face her fears.  The more she learns about Athena the harder her task appears to be but luckily she still has good friends who want to help her.

I loved getting to spend more time with Ari's new housemates in this installment.  One of the things I liked the most about the first book was the interaction between the group of misfits who all share an abandoned house in New 2.  We get to see more of Sebastian, Henri, Dub and Crank and learn a few more of their secrets in this book.  I did miss Violet though as we didn't see as much of her this time around but that was completely understandable and I'm hoping she'll have a bigger part to play in the next part of the story.  It is so nice to see that Ari is finally letting people past her defences and learning to rely on her friends.  She spent so long looking after herself that she still finds it hard to trust but she has come a long way since the first book.

Athena is proving herself to be a frightening enemy, she knows exactly how to hit Ari the hardest and enjoys making her suffer.  Ari isn't one to sit back and just let it happen though and she is getting stronger all the time.  I have a feeling the final showdown between the two of them will be explosive and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens.  This series is fast paced and the author always manages to surprise me with a few twists that I didn't see coming.  A Beautiful Evil is a quick and fun read with plenty of action and a hint of romance that has left me keen to pick up the next book.  If you enjoyed Darkness Becomes Her you don't want to miss this one.

Review: Supernaturally - Kiersten White

Review:
It's been six months since Evie left the IPCA (International Paranormal Containment Agency) to live a normal life.  She had always dreamt of going to school and doing all those other things that 16 year old girls do but she is finding it a lot less interesting than she thought it would be.  In fact, she's kind of missing the life she had with the IPCA so when Raquel asks her to work with them again Evie jumps at the chance.  Can she find a balance between the normal and the paranormal or will she be sucked completely back into the world of the IPCA?

I loved Paranormalcy so have been looking forward to Supernaturally for a year now and couldn't wait to start reading it.  Unfortunately I don't think it quite lived up to my expectations and a lot of the things I loved about the first book seemed to be missing in this installment.  In a lot of ways Evie was like a completely different character to the one I remembered.  Instead of being the witty and confident young girl who was never far from her beloved Tasey and was prepared to use it this Evie comes across as selfish, weak and self centred.  Her whole life seems to revolve around Lend and when she isn't complaining that she isn't good enough for him or that he doesn't spend enough time with her she is organising her whole life around fitting in with his plans.  She won't even consider applying to any colleges apart from the one that Lend already goes to.  It isn't even like Lend is asking her to do this, he seems to bend over backwards to show her how much he cares while all she does is lie to him and go behind his back.

That was another thing that really irritated me - Evie is constantly lying to everyone she knows and most of the time she doesn't even have a reason for it.  OK occasionally I could see her logic (even if I didn't agree with it) but when Lend finds out she is working for the IPCA again why does she have to keep lying to Ari about it?  There was also no excuse for not telling Lend what she knows about him.

I do still like Evie's sarcasm but I wanted to see more of the fun banter that was so prevalent in the first installment.  I also would have loved to see her pull out tasey and whip some butt like we all know she is capable of doing.  I enjoyed getting to see more of the faerie realms and am curious to see more of Reth and the results of Evie's actions when she was in faerie so I will be picking up the next book in the series.  I loved getting to see more of Ari and finding out about her past but I have to admit I wasn't a fan of new character Jack though.  I think because I loved Paranormalcy so much I went into Supernaturally with my expectations too high.  Although I didn't love the story I did like it so I would still recommend it to fans of the series, I just hope that Endlessly is even better.

Review:
Fourteen months ago Kat and Andrew were on the verge of taking the first step towards starting a relationship but that all changed one night after a horrific attack.  The attack saw Andrew turned into a werewolf and Kat devastated by the consequences of using her psychic abilities to kill their attackers.  Since that moment Andrew has pushed Kat away, terrified of hurting her because he doesn't have full control over his wolf.  Kat was heartbroken by Andrew's rejection and blames herself for the fact he was tuned.  Can they work through their guilt and anger to find a way to be together?

I absolutely love the Southern Arcana series and it feels like I've been waiting forever to read Kat and Andrew's story.  We have seen this couple throughout the series right from the attack to the way they have skirted around each other ever since so I was really excited that they were finally getting their chance at a happy ending.  There has been a lot of guilt and rejection between them so I knew they wouldn't have an easy journey but we've know all along how much they both care for each other.  Andrew may have been the one to push Kat away but he did it because he cares so much and his actions hurt him just as much as they hurt her.

Andrew may not have been born a shapeshifter but his instincts are all alpha and he is very protective of those he cares about.  I really appreciated the fact that he tried not to be a bossy, controlling alpha because he knows Kat has had enough enough of that last her a lifetime.  It wasn't always easy for him to go against his instincts but just the fact that he was willing to try showed how much he cares for her.  Kat was also changed after the attack, she still has nightmares over killing their attackers and she feels that it was her fault that Andrew was changed into a wolf.  She is still that geeky girl we first met but she has also grown stronger and more sure of herself since that night.  I loved the chemistry between the two of them and Kat's empathic abilities certainly added an interesting dimension to their foreplay - their story is smoking!

I have to admit I wasn't expecting the direction this story took, I thought there would be more about the werewolf politics (especially after the ending of Deadlock!) so was surprised to find it was more about Kat's investigation into the psychic cult her mother was a member of.  However, I really enjoyed the change in direction and it worked well as a backdrop for the development of Kat and Andrew's relationship.  We did still find out a little more about what is going on in the werewolf hierarchy and I'm sure we'll see even more in the next installment.

Cipher was a great installment to the series and I'm really looking forward to reading Impulse when it comes out later this year.  Although this story could be read as a stand alone I would highly recommend reading the series in order.  This really is a great series and one I have been really enjoying!

Review:
Two Weddings (and One Near Funeral) is a free short story that is set between the 3rd and 4th books in the Southern Arcana series (Deadlock & Cipher).  The story does contain spoilers for previous books in the series so I would recommend reading as far as Deadlock before picking it up.

We get to see the madness that are the preparations for Carmen and Alec's wedding and just how much the idea of a big society wedding scares the life out of Mackenzie.  I love getting to revisit couples after their books so we can see how they are doing now they've got their happy ending and this was no exception.  Two Weddings (and One Near Funeral) is a cute, fun read that is perfect for when you only have a few minutes spare and it made me immediately want to get started on Cipher. 

The Southern Arcana series is one of my favourites and I really think that the little extras Moira Rogers offer their fans just add to the reading experience.  If you're a fan of the series you'll definitely enjoy this quick read and if you haven't started it yet I'd highly recommend picking up a copy of Crux.

Review: Fated - Sarah Alderson

Review:
Evie is just a normal waitress, desperately saving money so she can leave her small town behind and move to New York. That is until she comes under attack from a group of demons (or Unhumans as they prefer to be known). Now she is thrown into the supernatural world, discovering she is the last born Hunter (or demon slayer) and it is her job to protect humanity. Lucas is half human and half Shadow Warrior and he works as an assassin for the Brotherhood (the Unhuman assassins who are set on destroying the Hunters). His latest job is to kill Evie but can he actually go through with it?

Sarah Alderson's debut Hunting Lila was one of my favourite books of the 2011 so although I'm desperate to get my hands on the sequel Losing Lila I was just as excited to read her stand alone novel Fated. I'm going to say it right now - I wasn't disappointed! In fact I think I liked Fated even more which really is saying something! As with Hunting Lila the action in Fated starts on the first page and is pretty much non-stop until the end making it a gripping read.

I loved the world building, Sarah has created a great selection of different types of Unhumans (or demons) that I enjoyed learning about. I'm also curious to learn more about the Hunters and their history. What I liked most is that you get to see things from both Evie and Lucas' points of view so you get to know the characters on each side of the war. It soon becomes clear that neither side is purely good or evil, there is definitely a mixture of good and bad on both human and unhuman sides so it's hard to know which team you should be routing for. You get the feeling that the two sides have spent so many years at war that neither of them really knows why they started fighting in the first place.

Evie is a great main character, she is thrust into the whole supernatural world with a sharp shock when she is attacked and although she takes time to adjust to this new world she doesn't just sit around complaining. She also doesn't just blindly trust what other people tell her, she is determined to do some investigating of her own and make sure she finds out the real truth. If you loved Alex from Hunting Lila you'll love Lucas just as much but in a different way. Lucas is just as protective as Alex was but has more of a bad boy vibe going for him (don't you just love a bad boy?!), the only thing that was missing was a motorbike lol. I loved the way things build up slowly between Evie and Lucas, there is instant lust but not instant love so their connection is much more believable. The tension between the two of them is very well written and although you're made to wait a long time for the kissing scene it is well worth the wait! Yes, I do have a new book crush in Lucas!

Although the story doesn't end on a major cliffhanger there is definitely room for this to be the first installment of a series. When I asked the author she confirmed that she has actually already written a further two stories about these characters but they haven't been contracted yet. I for one am praying that they get picked up by a publisher because I desperately want to know what happens next with Lucas and Evie! My only complaint with Fated is that I wanted more, Sarah Alderson could have doubled the page count and I'd have been happy. If you're looking for a fast paced, action packed paranormal story with a fantastic romance then you need this book. Now I can't wait to get my hands on the author's next book, Losing Lila, it's definitely at the top of my wish list.

Review: Alien Proliferation - Gini Koch

Review:
Alien Proliferation picks up the story several months after the ending of Alien in the Family with Kitty heavily pregnant and about to give birth to her first child.  Being pregnant with an alien / human hybrid has really taken it out of our heroine though so she is stuck on bed rest and feeling rather cranky, luckily she has superdad-to-be and empath Jeff on hand to anticipate her every need.  The bad guys aren't going to wait until after the happy event to start causing trouble though and things are going downhill fast.  What with a plot to kill both Kitty's best friend and her mother, team members disappearing, a potential mole and some unexpected drugs testing they are in for a bumpy ride.  Can Kitty figure out who is behind it all so she can relax and enjoy being a new mum?

It's official, I'm an addict!  I literally can't get enough of this series and I don't know how I'm going to survive the four month wait for Alien Diplomacy (yes I have already pre-ordered my copy!).  This has become an all time favourite series and now I've finished reading Alien Proliferation all I really want to do is pick up Touched by an Alien and start re-reading the books again from the beginning.  If you haven't started this series yet you really don't know what you're missing.

I absolutely love Kitty, she may be heavily pregnant and going slightly insane from an abundance of hormones but she is still top of the witty banter and she has managed to surround herself with the hottest and most supportive team ever.  Seriously, I can't imagine what she'd do without these guys.  If you've read any of my other reviews for this series then you'll know I'm absolutely crazy about Jeff, I didn't think I could love him more but scenes with him, Kitty and the baby melted me into a puddle.  Even his jealousy is hot and that would normally be a complete turn off for me.  My heart both broke and jumped for joy for Christopher, I'm so pleased with how things are turning out for him.  Chuckie had me in stitches when he was bantering with Jeff (especially one particular scene where he was trying to get Jeff to come home for Kitty) but he also had an incredibly sweet moment with Kitty that brought a tear to my eye.  Reader, Gower and ACE - love, love and love some more along with the fly boys and the rest of team Alpha.  Not forgetting Kitty's new partner who came as a complete shock to me but an absolutely wonderful one.

Alien Proliferation has everything you'd expect from Gini Koch and this series - romance, action, comedy, shocking twists, swoon worthy hunks (both alien and human), a kick ass heroine, great friendships, an ever increasing cast of fabulous characters (some of them even come with uniforms!), witty banter, an adorable baby (so that's a new one but the baby boom is well and truly on it's way), awesome pet poofies and so much more.  OK there may be a little less sex that you'd expect but Kitty has just given birth so even she has to take a bit of a break lol.  A fabulous installment to a fabulous series and one I can't wait to continue!

Review: Blackwatch - Jenna Burtenshaw

Review:
I loved Wintercraft so was looking forward to re-visiting the world Jenna Burtenshaw has created in Blackwatch.  This really is a fabulous dark fantasy series and one that I would highly recommend.  This story is told from both Kate and Silas's points of view which allows us to follow two very different journeys as they face the aftermath of events in the first book.  Kate and her friend Edgar went to the Skilled for help and protection but Kate finds herself wrongly accused of murder and placed under arrest.  When she is found guilty and imprisoned Edgar is horrified and determined to find a way to release her.  Silas is on the run knowing that the whole of the High Council believe him to be a traitor.  He flees Albion and heads to the continent in search of Dalliah who he believes could be a strong ally.  However nothing is quite what it seems and there are events in motion that neither Kate or Silas are aware of, someone is manipulating them both but who is it and just what are they trying to achieve?

Silas was my favourite character in the first book and that has continued into Blackwatch, in fact I think he's one of my favourite characters of 2011.  He is so complex and you're never quite sure what to make of him, he definitely has a bad side - we saw in Wintercraft how lethal he is to his enemies but he also has a kinder side even if he does keep it well hidden.  I never know quite what to expect next when it comes to Silas and I love it when a character can surprise me as much as he does.  I really like Kate too but I would have liked to have seen a bit more of her using her new found abilities in this book.  We hear a lot about how Kate is the most powerful Walker in memory and the Skilled are all afraid of her potential but we don't get to see much of what she is capable of, I'm sure this is something that will change in the next book though.  I have a bit of a soft spot for her friend Edgar too, he is so caring and goes out of his way to protect Kate no matter what risk it puts him under.

The plot is so fast paced that I didn't want to put the book down, there are some great twists that I didn't see coming and it makes it really difficult to figure out who Kate can really trust.  The ending has left me desperate to get hold of the next book in the series and I can't wait to see what happens next.  Another great installment from Jenna Burtenshaw in a series I'd highly recommend.

Review: Blood Feud - Alyxandra Harvey

Review:

I really enjoyed My Love Lies Bleeding (released in the US as Hearts at Stake) so I was looking forward to Blood Feud and Alyxandra Harvey didn't disappoint me.  Instead of continuing the story from Lucy and Solange's perspectives in this installment our narrators are Logan and Isabeau but the time line picks up just after the ending of the first book and we get to find out what is happening with all of our favourite characters.  We already know Logan as the second youngest of the seven Drake brothers and Isabeau was briefly in the first book when she saved Solange's life but it was great to get to know them both better.  I loved the fact that we still got to see plenty of Lucy and Nicholas though - I absolutely love them both and the banter between them was just as good in this installment.  We didn't see as much of Solange and Kieran as I would have liked but if you're trying to focus on too many characters at the same time you often lose focus on the new romance so I'm glad that didn't happen.

Logan didn't quite top Nicholas to become my new favourite Drake brother but he's a close runner up and I did really like him.  His old fashioned values and gentlemanly manners were really sweet and I loved the way he was confident enough to wear old fashioned clothes and show his own sense of style.  We didn't really know much about Isabeau before, she is the Princess of the Hounds and I found it really interesting to find out more about their way of life and the magical abilities they were able to tap into.  Alyxandra Harvey has created a really unique mythology around the different types of vampires in her world and it's something I'm looking forward to seeing more of as the series continues.  Isabeau has suffered a lot and she is determined to get revenge on the one who turned her into a vampire.  I loved the way we get to see flash backs to her past and as you learn what she went through during the French Revolution it is easy to see why she is so wary of everyone now.  She doesn't want to admit her feelings for Logan but he manages to creep his way into her affections even when she is determined to keep him out.

Alongside the romance Blood Feud also has plenty of action.  There are so many different things going on as the Drake family try to deal with the aftermath of the end of the first book (sorry if that sounds vague but I don't want to spoil My Love Lies Bleeding for you if you haven't read it yet), they are trying to sign a treaty with the Hounds and Montmartre is still determined to get his hands on both Solange and the crown.  This really is a great installment to the series and I can't wait to pick up Out For Blood, I love the banter between the Drake siblings and can't wait to get to know Quinn better!  If you're looking for a fun, action packed and romantic read then you can't go far wrong with this series and it's one I would definitely recommend.

Review: Trapped - Michael Northrop

The day the blizzard started, no one knew it was going to keep snowing for a week.

Scott and his friends are among the last seven kids at their school waiting to get picked up that day and they soon realise that no one is coming for them.  Still, it doesn't seem so bad to spend the night there, especially when Krista and Julie are sleeping just down the hall.

Then the power goes out.  Then the heat.  The pipes freeze.  The roof shudders.  As the days add up, the snow piles higher, the empty halls grow colder and darker and the mounting pressure forces a devastating decision . . .

Review:
Trapped is the story of seven teenagers who are left stranded at their school in a terrible blizzard.  As the snow storm continues their situation gets worse and worse and it seems less likely that they will be rescued.  It's a fight for survival but will they all make it through?

I wasn't too sure what to expect when I picked up Trapped, I was a little worried that it might be too scary for me but although the story was very creepy in places it didn't frighten me as much as I expected.  The story definitely makes you feel claustrophobic though and I also found myself shivering as I read about the ever increasing levels of snow (I actually had to curl up in a blanket to continue reading the book!).

I enjoyed the interaction between the students and watching them get to know each other better.  The story is narrated by Scotty who stayed late with two of his friends (Pete & Jason) to work on building Jason's go-kart.  Scotty feels quite lucky to be trapped with his best friends, he feels it gives them an advantage over most of the others who didn't really know each other before becoming snowed in, but the longer they are stuck with no sign of rescue the more their tempers begin to fray and the friends are at risk of turning on each other.  On the other hand you have kids from completely different social groups who would normally never even talk to each other that realise they have more in common than they would have expected as they get to know each other.  It was really interesting to see the unexpected friendships that start to develop as the story continues.

I think I was expecting their fight for survival to be harder than it was, not to say that they had an easy time of it because that is far from true, but they had access to a ready food supply and managed to quickly come up with ways to get water and some heat.  I guess it makes sense that a school would have plenty of food supplies but it did make the story a little less dramatic than it could have been.  This was still a story that I couldn't put down though and it did make me think about whether I would have survived in similar circumstances.  By the time I'd finished reading I wanted to go to the supermarket and stockpile food just in case of a snow storm.  This was an enjoyable read and one that makes for very creepy winter reading, just make sure you're sitting in front of a roaring fire before you pick it up!

Review:
I'm a big fan of Christine Feehan's GhostWalkers series but I would definitely recommend reading the series in order because you would be missing a lot of back story to pick up the series starting with Street Game (which is actually book 8).  I have to admit that I was a bit confused when I picked this one up and realised that Christine has now moved on to the third group of GhostWalkers.  It's not that I don't like the new group, more that there are still so many characters from the first 2 groups that I've been hoping to find out more about!  I was disappointed to find that there was no interaction with any of the members of the previous two groups throughout the whole book, in fact the only cross over to make it part of the same series is that the bad guy is still Doctor Whitney and he still has a whole host of unknown people helping cover his tracks and allowing him to continue his illegal and immoral experiments.

Mack and his team have a much stronger bond than the first two teams of GhostWalkers, they all grew up on the streets together and have had each others backs since they were children.  They know each other inside out, can predict how everyone else thinks and will react in different situations and they have a great rapport which allows for a lot of fun banter between them.  Jaimie was part of their group as a child and joined the GhostWalker program alongside them but when she left Mack two years ago she abandoned the rest of the team as well.  They all think of her as a sister so when Mack stumbles back into her life she not only has to deal with her very alpha and controlling ex who wants her back but she also has a bunch of protective older brothers on her case.  I liked Jaimie but I do think she caved in too easily to the demands of Mack and the others, I would have liked to see her stand up for herself a bit more.  I alternated between wanting to slap Mack and wanting to hug him.  At times he absolutely drove me insane and if I could have shook some sense into him I would have done but then he'd show a softer, more vulnerable side that melted me just a little bit.

I really hope that we're going to get some kind of resolution to the Whitney plot line soon, I'm starting to have trouble keeping up with who the bad guys are, which GhostWalkers are part of which team and all the evil deeds that the doctor has committed.  It would be nice to see Christine Feehan move the series in a slightly different direction now.  The story has left things set up nicely for Kane's story (which is up next in Ruthless Game) but I'm also curious to find out more about Jaimie's friend Joe and I'd love to see more of Javier too.  What I'd really like in the next book is some more interaction with the previous two teams though, I want to know how all the other couples are getting on and it would be good to have everyone working together for some kind of big show down but I guess I'll have to wait and see if that happens.

Street Game seemed to focus a little less on the romance than some of the more recent books have which isn't necessarily a bad thing but I would have liked a little more than we got.  I also found the plot moved a bit slower than normal.  There seemed to be a lot of sitting around and waiting for something to happen and the only thing that stopped me from getting bored was the banter amongst the team the fact I was getting to know a new set of characters.  This wasn't my favourite book in the series but it was still an enjoyable installment and I'm looking forward to finding out what happens next.

Review:
Limos is the only female Horseman of the Apocalypse and if her seal breaks she will become Famine. That is the least of her worries though as she is also destined to become Satan's bride. She has spent 5,000 years trying to avoid her fiancé and putting off the wedding but one stolen kiss from Arik means all hell breaks loose. Arik is a human who works for the army's paranormal division and knows all about the demons and other creatures that roam the earth.  He has been attracted to Limos from the moment he first saw her but he had no idea what would happen to him if he tried to act on that attraction. As soon as he kisses her he finds himself dragged to hell to be tortured, if Satan's minions can just get him to call out Limos' name she will be forced to go through with the wedding. Can Arik manage to protect her and what will it cost him if he does? Is there any way he can escape?

I loved the first book in the Lords of Deliverance series (Eternal Rider) but I have to say that Immortal Rider was even better. I'm not sure how Larissa Ione manages so consistently to top her previous books with every new instalment but she does and she always leaves me desperate for more. If you're a fan of paranormal romance and you haven't tried this author yet you seriously need to do something about that. The Lords of Deliverance series can be read separately to the Demonica series but I'd recommend reading the Demonica books first because we get to see some of the characters again in this newer series.

Limos is a great heroine and one who is full of contrasts, she is both a girlie girl who loves painting her nails, dressing up and drinking cocktails but she is also a kick ass warrior who can fight with the best of them. Her brothers may be protective of her but it isn't because she is weak and unable to look after herself. She has a shady past full of dark secrets and she is terrified that if her brothers and Arik find out the truth they will all hate her, she does some stupid things trying to keep her secrets but I was proud of her when she finally confronted the truth. Arik is a swoon worthy hero, how can you not love someone who endures a month of the most horrific torture rather than give up the woman he has been lusting after? I do love a protective hero, oh and the plans he has for Limos are guaranteed to leave you fanning yourself! The romance between them is sweet and incredibly sexy and I enjoyed seeing how things worked out for them.

As you'd expect from a novel by Larissa Ione the plot of Immortal Rider is action packed and will have you sitting on the edge of your seat. Although the focus remains on our main couple Arik and Limos there are so many other plot threads that Larissa effortlessly weaves together making for a complex tale that you won't want to put down. I loved finding out more about Thanatos and can not wait for his story (although I'm a bit worried that I won't be able to forgive Regan for her actions in this book but you'll have to read it yourself to find out why). It was great to see some of the characters we already know and love make appearances, along with Ares and Cara we also get to see some of the Demonica characters and catch up with what has been happening with them.

I really can't recommend this series (and the Demonica books) highly enough and I can't get enough of the world that Larissa Ione has created. If you're a fan of strong characters, intricate plots, hot romance and demons (or horsemen!) to swoon for you need this book!

We Need To Talk About Kevin is a thought provoking and challenging read which may not appeal to everyone, parents and non-parents alike. The book is a series of letters written by Kevin’s mother Eva, to his father Franklin, about their family life leading up to the terrible day when Kevin killed some fellow students and a teacher at his school.

Eva’s narrative begins in her current day and reflects back from before Kevin was born, continually interspersing tales from the past with those from more recent times, providing comments of what she thought at the time, or thinks now looking back.

The subject matter and reflections of the past can often make uncomfortable reading, but hearing the story told through Eva’s eyes was intriguing. Before opening this book, I think most people will have their own opinions about the nature versus nurture debate regarding children who commit awful acts against others, and may therefore approach it with the expectation of either having their views vindicated, or substantially challenged. To me however, We Need To Talk About Kevin makes me want to do just that – talk about Kevin… and his childhood and his family – listen to and discuss other people’s opinions of the book.

The most interesting thing about this book for me, and why I feel there is perhaps no right or wrong answers about Kevin the fictitious character, is that the narrative only comes from one person’s perspective and it is told looking back on events that have already occurred. Throughout the book I questioned many stories and Eva’s subsequent comments about them, wondering about how close to the facts of the true events they really were. People do not always recall things from years gone by with a great degree of accuracy, as time and memory can remove, distort and add various details. Also as the mother of a child who committed such a horrific act, Eva may have consciously or subconsciously told a tale which validated her memory, justifying her thoughts and feelings about what happened and why.

To me, We Need To Talk About Kevin is an absorbing piece of fiction which raises many questions for discussion and/or consideration around a very difficult subject.

Review:
As a massive fan of Delirium I couldn't wait to get hold of Hana's story.  In this novella we see some of the main events of Delirium through Hana's eyes giving us a different perspective on things.  The story is beautifully written as I would expect of anything from Lauren Oliver and there is a surprising twist at the end but I would have liked it to be longer.  We don't really learn much in this story that we didn't already know from the first book apart from the ending which I can't say more about without giving spoilers.

I wouldn't recommend reading this story before Delirium as it would definitely give you spoilers but this is a nice short story to keep you going until Pandemonium comes out in March.  It also contains the first few chapters of Pandemonium so you can get a sneak peek of what happens to Lena next.  If you haven't already read Delirium it's a book I'd highly recommend it was one of my favourite YA dystopians of 2011.

Quick Review: Santa's Twin - written by Dean Koontz & Illustrated by Phil Parks

Review:
This isn't the kind of book you'd expect from horror and suspense writer Dean Koontz, it's actually a children's picture book. It is the tale of Santa's evil twin who is determined to ruin Christmas, he has locked up Santa and has set off on Santa's sleigh to cause mischief instead of leaving presents. I've had this for years now and I bring it out most Christmases when I want a fun, festive read. The story is told in verses in much the same rhythm as The Night Before Christmas and just begs to be read out loud making it perfect bedtime story material. Here is a quick example:

"And look - reindeer far up in the sky!

Some silly goose has taught them to fly.

The driver giggles quite like a loon -

a madman, a goofball, a thug or a goon.

Something is wrong - any fool could tell.

If this is Santa, then Santa's not well.

His mean little eyes spin just like tops.

So somebody better quick call the cops!"

There are a couple of places where the rhythm doesn't quite fit together properly which can be a bit off putting but this is still a really fun read and one my brother used to love to have read to him when he was younger. I haven't even mentioned Phil Parks' beautiful illustrations yet, every page has a detailed full colour image that you could spend ages looking at. Then when you get to the end of the book you'll have no choice but to start again from the beginning just so you can look for the item that is included in every picture (there are a couple of pages where I still haven't found it!). This is a great story for reading with young children and one I would definitely recommend.

Review: When Beauty Tamed the Beast - Eloisa James

If only Miss Linnet Berry Thrynne hadn't been caught kissing that prince . . . But now the ton believes Linnet to be with royal child - and therefore unmarriageable - so she might as well make her desperate father happy consenting to wed a beast.

Review:
I really enjoyed A Kiss At Midnight so this was a series I couldn't wait to continue reading.  The first book was a retelling of Cinderella and I don't think I even need to tell you what When Beauty Tamed the Beast is a retelling of.  Linnet was the one of the Ton's most beautiful young ladies and was expected to make a good marriage. That was before she got caught kissing the prince and rumours circulated that she was pregnant.  With her reputation in tatters Linnet's father is pushing her into marrying as quickly as possible, even if it is to a man she's never met and one who's reputation is that of a beast.  Piers is a skilled doctor but has a foul temper and a crippled leg, rumour has it that he was left infertile by the incident that damaged his leg so it is believed that he will be happy to accept Linnet as a bride even if he does think she is pregnant.  Piers isn't quite so keen on the idea of a wife though, especially one that his estranged father has sent for him and Linnet isn't sure if she could live with a man who has a temper as bad as Piers anyway.

I have to say I loved this couple from the beginning, Linnet is caught in a difficult situation thanks to the unwanted advances of the prince coupled with her mother's reputation.  Everyone in society looks down on her and believes her to be a fallen woman but in truth is is very innocent and at times quite naive.  She isn't a push over though and despite Piers' reputation and the way he shouts and complains when she arrives at his house she refuses to let him order her around.  I really liked the way she stood up for herself and the banter between the two of them was great.  I was left laughing out loud several times throughout the story, particularly after some comments Linnet makes when Piers first takes her swimming.  Piers is one of those heroes you can't help but fall for, he may have a temper and can be a complete ass but he's actually quite charming when you look beneath the surface.

I loved how Linnet and Piers gradually get to know each other and become friends before lovers.  The actual romance is sweet, sexy and was one I know I'll happily read again.  I enjoyed the side story with Piers' parents and my heart broke for him when we discovered how he had injured his leg, it made some aspects of his character much easier to understand.  There was a bit towards the end when I was really annoyed with Piers for the way he treated Linnet but he did manage to redeem himself afterwards.  I did feel Linnet forgave him a little too quickly though, I think she should have made him suffer a little more than she did but they are so obviously made for each other that I'll let her off.

Although part of a series this book can easily be read as a stand alone.  Each of the main novels so far have been about completely different characters.  The only cross over seems to be with the ebook only novellas so I wouldn't recommend reading Storming the Castle before you've read A Kiss at Midnight and I believe that Winning the Wallflower will have some cross over with characters from The Duke is Mine.  That doesn't mean I wouldn't recommend reading the whole series though, I've loved all three stories so far and I can't wait to read The Duke is Mine.  Eloisa James is definitely becoming a firm favourite of mine for fun, sexy, historical romances.

Review:
I have been enjoying reading Christmas themed anthologies over the last few days so A Vampire for Christmas was just the kind of thing I was looking for.  Anthologies can be a great way of trying new authors and I have definitely added a couple of authors to my to read pile thanks to this one.  Although there were a couple of stories that I didn't enjoy as much as the others I'd say this anthology was well worth buying just for Alexis Morgan and Laurie London's contributions.

I've not read any of the books in the Sweetblood series but after reading this novella I'll definitely be picking up the first book in the series (Bonded by Blood).  Enchanted by Blood is the story of Trace a vampire who is about to take his place on the governing council but is torn between his family duty and his love for the human Charlotte.  Although I did find a couple of things confusing because I've not read the first few books in the series I enjoyed this novella and it reminded me a little of Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed series and J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood books.  My one irritation was that Charlotte forgave Trace a bit too easily for wiping her memory, it would have taken a lot longer for him to win me around after pulling a stunt like that but I can forgive it since this was a novella not a full length book.  I really liked both of the main characters and I'm looking forward to reading more of this series.

Monsters Don't Do Christmas by Michele Hauf

This story was OK but nothing special and I'd started to get bored by the end of it.  Daniel was transformed into a vampire against his will and has believed himself to be a monster unworthy of happiness ever since.  He is drawn to Olivia but with her life in the public eye it isn't going to be easy for him to keep the fact he is a vampire a secret.  I felt that Olivia accepted the fact that Daniel was a vampire far too easily and I was surprised that she wasn't even slightly afraid of him in the beginning.  I was also annoyed that she kept referring to herself as a monster when there was no reason for her to.  Like I said this story was OK and I will try something else by this author in the future (I have a couple of her books on my to read pile), hopefully I'd be able to connect to the characters better in a full length novel.

When Herald Angels Sing by Caridad Pineiro

I'm not going to spend much time talking about this one.  I found the constant switching between the past and the present confusing.  I didn't connect to either of the characters and didn't even bother to finish reading the story.  I was worried that I hadn't given this one a fair chance because I had a really bad headache when I first picked it up so I tried to give it a second chance and had exactly the same problem.  I've heard really good things about this author so will probably try something else by her in the future, unfortunately When Herald Angels Sing just didn't work for me.

This was definitely my favourite story in the anthology and I'm really looking forward to reading more by Alexis Morgan in the future.  Vampire Eagan works as an undercover policeman and is investigating the murders of several teenagers.  He needs a cover story for being in the area where the teens have been disappearing from and Della's diner is the perfect location for him to observe what is going on.  Della loves to look after everyone and the customers who spend time at the diner are more like family, she is quick to welcome Eagan into her world but Eagan is used to spending his time alone and it isn't so easy for him to get used to his growing feelings for Della.  This was such a sweet story, it has a great Christmas feel good factor and I enjoyed every minute of it.  The A Vampire for Christmas anthology is worth buying for this story alone & I would highly recommend it.
