Review: Serpent's Game - Pippa DaCosta

More than darkness...

Reeling from the revelations discovered in Egypt, Ace Dante is on a knife-edge, but the gods aren’t going to wait for him to come to terms with the truth.

Ancient and deadly beasts straight out of the underworld are targeting Nick “Cujo” Jones and his daughter. There doesn’t seem to be a connection to Ace, until a mysterious and familiar box turns up. A box marked with the snake-headed jackal. And it’s open.

This time, the gods crossed a line. Ace is done with their puppet-mastery. He’s fighting back.

But as hidden secrets come to light and Ace’s friendships crumble around him, will he have the strength to fight for what’s right, or will he allow the darkness inside to consume him?

After all, what is one man’s hope against the will of evil incarnate?

Review:
Every time I think this series can't possibly get any better Pippa DaCosta proves me wrong and takes things to a whole new level. Serpent's Game was everything I love about the Soul Eater series and then some - the stakes are higher, the plot is even more twisted, the characters I love are all on top form and absolutely nothing is what it first appears. Be prepared for an emotional rollercoaster because this book totally wrecked me - in the best possible way of course!

There were major revelations about Ace in the previous book, I'm not going to go into detail here but oh wow do those revelations have a major knock on effect in this book. Ace is remembering more and more about his past, his darkest side is very close to the surface and all that remains to be seen is how much of his humanity he has managed to keep hold of. Ace has always done everything he could to keep his best friend Cujo out of sight of the gods who enjoy toying with his life but now that ancient beasts are targeting Cujo and his daughter Ace realises that the secret is out. Someone is using them to get to Ace and he needs to put a stop to it before he loses his friend forever.

As if that wasn't enough to deal with Ace is also stuck in the middle of an argument between Isis and Osiris, Cat is back on the scene and still searching for what happened to Bast and he's starting to wonder if he might possibly have misjudged Shu. Ace has a lot of balls in the air and if he's not very, very careful something is going to drop and the damage could be catastrophic. Get ready for secrets and betrayals, for characters you love to behave in shocking and disturbing ways, for high stakes drama and exciting new characters. The game is afoot as the series ramps up for the final instalment and I can't wait to see how it all comes together in Edge of Forever. This is one urban fantasy series that you really don't want to miss!

Review: Protecting Their Mate Part One - Moira Rogers

Part One (of Three)

Blake is on a mission from his alpha--to track down a werewolf whose parents dragged her into the human world years ago, one who may be in danger. He expects the lead to go nowhere, given how few wolves live among humans, but he discovers something rare indeed, caged in a basement: a beautiful, curvy woman gripped by the fever, ready to mate.

Ashley Todd has never fit in. She's always been too much--too big, too demanding, too aware of the wolf hiding beneath her skin. She's been locked away for months--been alone for a lifetime--and in walks Blake to save her from her prison. Her rescuer is hard, intense--a dominant wolf whose bossy attitude makes her growl...and yearn to submit.

Soothing Ashley's mating fever is Blake's responsibility--and his pleasure. Their passion is explosive, undeniable. But what started out as a job for Blake quickly becomes something more, and the toughest part of his mission looms: taking Ashley back to his pack so she can choose her permanent mate from amongst his brethren.

Ashley is drawn to dominant Blake, but meeting the rest of the pack reignites her desire. She is overwhelmed by her new life and all it entails, but embracing her inner wolf means embracing the truth: if she doesn't explore her attraction to the other members of the pack, she'll never find her forever mate.

Protecting Their Mate was originally published as an eight part serial under the penname Mia Thorne. It has been repackaged, but the story remains the same.

The Last Pack Series:

Protecting Their Mate Part Two
Protecting Their Mate Part Three

Review:
Protecting Their Mate is a novel that was previously published as an eight part serial under the pen name Mia Thorne and is now being rereleased in just three parts under the name Moira Rogers. Just to be clear the story hasn't changed so if you read it in it's original format you don't need to buy this version. I've been a fan of the writing team behind the Moira Rogers for many years now but it's been a while since they had anything new under this name as they've been focused on their Kit Rocha stories for the last couple of years. If you've read any of their Beyond Series you'll know they excel at writing no-holds-barred but incredibly hot sex and thats exactly what you'll get from this serial. If you're looking for a hot quickie read then you definitely want to check this series out but if that's not your thing then it may be one to avoid.

Ashley is a werewolf but her parents chose to leave their pack when she was very young so she's been raised amongst humans. Her parents were determined to suppress their werewolf nature so Ashley has been taught to keep her wolf locked down tight but when she struggled to hide her mating urge her parents locked her in their basement hoping she would learn control. Instead it's just put her through months of torture as she struggles to deal with feelings that feel completely alien to her. Blake has been sent by his Alpha to track down Ashley, they know her parents chose to live as humans but have heard rumours that she's in danger and want to make sure she's okay. Blake is horrified by the conditions he finds her in, especially when he realises she's in heat, but he will do whatever it takes to give her the relief she needs and take her to safety.

I thought this was a great start to the serial, Blake and Ashley have wonderful chemistry and the authors waste no time getting down to the action so the heat ramps up very quickly! Female werewolves are in short supply and Blake's pack consists of five guys who are all looking to find a mate but they're more than willing to share in the meantime so I think Ashley is going to have a wonderful time while she decides which one of them is her best match. If you've read any of the Beyond series published under the name Kit Rocha then you'll have a very good idea of how hot this story will be (if you like this serial and haven't read the Beyond books - DO IT NOW!). I'm definitely looking forward to continuing the series and I can't wait to see which of the wolves Ashley ends up with!

Book Trailer: Firebird Trilogy - Claudia Gray

I thought it would be fun to highlight some of the books that I have been wanting to read for ages but just haven't found time to get to yet. I have no excuse for not starting Claudia Gray's Firebird trilogy yet, not only do I own the first two books but I've enjoyed other books she's written (Fateful and Defy the Stars)! Add in the fact that this trilogy has such an awesome concept (just watch the video below & you'll see what I mean!) and I should have read it years ago so I'm going to try and bump it up the list now!

Cloud Atlas meets Orphan Black in this epic dimension-bending trilogy by New York Times bestselling author Claudia Gray about a girl who must chase her father's killer through multiple dimensions.

Marguerite Caine's physicist parents are known for their groundbreaking achievements. Their most astonishing invention, called the Firebird, allows users to jump into multiple universes—and promises to revolutionize science forever. But then Marguerite's father is murdered, and the killer—her parent's handsome, enigmatic assistant Paul—escapes into another dimension before the law can touch him.

Marguerite refuses to let the man who destroyed her family go free. So she races after Paul through different universes, always leaping into another version of herself. But she also meets alternate versions of the people she knows—including Paul, whose life entangles with hers in increasingly familiar ways. Before long she begins to question Paul's guilt—as well as her own heart. And soon she discovers the truth behind her father's death is far more sinister than she expected.

A Thousand Pieces of You explores an amazingly intricate multi-universe where fate is unavoidable, the truth elusive, and love the greatest mystery of all.

Has anyone read the series? If you have I'd love to know what you think of it! Leave me a link to your reviews of the first book and I'll check them out.

Review: Glory - Ana Jolene

Nineteen year old, India Beaumont has bipolar II disorder. Living in a world where solar flares have reshaped society, she must fight to survive in Ward Four where the only people thriving are part of an exclusive motorcycle club. Glory MC don’t play well with strangers but when Indy manages to land a job as a bartender at their clubhouse, she gets the fresh start she’s always dreamed of. While everyone else is focused on the flares, no one will be paying attention to her or the disorder she means to keep from everyone.

The president’s son, Ian Haste, is the first to zero-in on her, seeming to sense the kindred spirit that she desperately hides. As secretary and treasurer of Glory MC, Hastie is exactly who Indy needs to avoid, but the reckless lifestyle he lives may also be the one thing that helps him understand her better than anyone else.

As tensions rise between Ward leaders, Indy’s secret threatens to be exposed before she is ready, and with only pieces of the puzzle, Hastie doesn’t know what to believe. When he finally discovers the secret she’s been hiding, will Hastie still be able to love her or will he deem Indy too crazy even for him?

Glory MC Series:

Review:
Glory is the first book in Ana Jolene's Glory MC series, set in a dystopian future where solar flares have decimated the population and the government has collapsed. The area has been split into different sectors and Glory Motorcycle Club control ward 4. There is some rivalry between the different wards but we're yet to find out exactly what happened to cause this or who is in charge of most of the other areas. Indy and Hastie meet when she starts working behind the bar at the Glory MC club house, he's instantly attracted to her but she's holding him at a distance because of a secret she is desperately trying to keep. It's up to Hastie to break through her defences if he wants to understand what makes Indy tick.

This is Ana Jolene's debut novel and I think she did a brilliant job of bringing her characters to life. Indy in particular was a complex character whose bipolar disorder affects her greatly. She could be a hard character to understand because she goes from phases of hyper-mania straight into boughts of depression and you never know quite what she'll do next but I felt that was realistic for someone with her illness. I found it frustrating that she wouldn't tell Hastie what was going on with her but at the same time I could completely understand why she didn't want to be judged for her bipolar disorder and was afraid that he'd walk away from her if he knew about it. I liked the way Hastie was so patient with her and so understanding when he did find out why she was blowing hot and cold with him but sometimes I struggled to fit his personality in with what I expect from a scary alpha biker. This isn't a genre I've read a huge number of books in but in my experience MC characters tend to be a bit more badass than the Glory MC members but that's hopefully something that will change as we get to know them all a bit better.

Where the story fell down for me was in the world building, there were definitely some interesting ideas in there and I can see it getting better as the series continues but I felt we needed a bit more background information about how the world came to be destroyed. There were some inconsistencies in the way we're told that there is no government and no police so life is hard but at the same time they had easy access to electricity (when a solar flare wasn't in progress) so the utilities companies are still running. They were also easily able to buy gas for their bikes, Indy owned a car and lived alone with a female friend with no mention of any danger, there didn't seem to be any food shortages or general lawlessness in the area and they were able to contact manufacturers to place orders for supplies when Indy wanted to give the bar she worked in a makeover. Basically I don't understand why the government is gone but everything else still seems to be running as normal and that threw me out of the story a bit.

I'm hoping that the world will be expanded upon in the next book and I definitely liked the characters enough to want to continue reading. Considering this was her debut I expect great things from Ana Jolene in the future.

Review: The Mechanical Minotaur - Laura Lam

Untold centuries ago, the Archipelago was ruled by the Alder—mysterious beings who vanished, leaving behind only scattered artefacts of unknown power, called Vestige. Sometimes, a person will be lucky or unlucky enough to discover that each piece of Vestige has its own tale to tell . . .

The Mechanical Minotaur

Evander’s father locks him in the cellar on his twelfth birthday. Their house in the Emerald Bowl is cold and empty, far from the warm home in Imachara where he lived with his parents back when his mother was alive. Yet down in the dim, dark cellar is a trunk with Evander’s name on it, and within is an automaton that says it can lead the boy back to his mother . . .

Vestigial Tales are stories set in the world of the award-winning Micah Grey series. Step behind the circus ring from Pantomime, the theatre of Shadowplay, and the court magic of Masquerade.

Note: This story is best read after Masquerade, as a cap to the Micah Grey series.

Review:
The Mechanical Minotaur is the 5th of Laura Lam's Vestigial Tales but where most of these short stories can be read at any point in the Micha Grey series this one really should be read after Masquerade if you want to avoid spoilers.

This is the story of a young boy called Evander who has been treated terribly by his father ever since the death of his mother a year previously. Then on the night of his 12th birthday Evander receives an unexpected gift that makes him question everything he thought he saw the night his mother died. Now Evander is on a quest, with the help of a vestige mechanical minotaur, to uncover what truly happened that night but it won't be an easy journey.

I don't want to say much more about the story but this was a nice addition to the Micha Grey world and I really liked Evander's character. This does tie into the main series but you don't really figure out how until nearer the end of the story so I'm not going to spoil things by saying how. Evander was a really sweet boy and I think I'd have liked his story even more if it had been a little longer, as it is I don't think it was a particularly necessary addition to the series but it was worth reading if you want to see a bit more of this world.

“Cavanaugh, take over a moment,” Sherry called over her shoulder, towards the other end of the bar to Maya’s left.

Her eyes leaped there.

Landed on a huge male with short silver hair who stood with his back to Sherry, the lights playing across his broad shoulders changing his white shirt from blue to red as they shifted.

He twisted at the waist to look at Sherry.

Maya didn’t hear what he said.

She didn’t hear the music.

Didn’t hear anything but the thumping of her heart.

She stared at the male Cavanaugh had been talking to at the end of the bar.

A male with flame red tousled hair and piercing silver eyes that captured hers as he lifted them from his beer to her, looking past the bartender.

Heat rushed through her, fire that burst to life inside her so fiercely she couldn’t catch her breath, and she stared at him, transfixed, lost in those silver eyes as they turned liquid, glowed around his irises and pulled her deeper still, narrowing the world down to only him.

Who was he?

In the wake of the fire that blazed through her blood, her instincts flashed to life, sweeping through her in a devastating wave that stripped all control from her.

She snapped and snarled at the females near her, baring her short fangs at them as a need seized her and drove her to obey it.

A need to fight.

She growled at Sherry through gritted teeth, her fangs slicing into her gums as they elongated.

Sherry backed off, her blue eyes shooting wide as she distanced herself.

No.

On a low growl, Maya leaped onto the black bar, and swiped at her, claws cutting through the air. Sherry ducked beneath her blow, narrowly evading it. Maya’s hackles rose, the urge flowing stronger, driving her harder. She needed to fight. She needed to make sure every female in the vicinity left.

This was her territory now.

She would make that clear.

She opened her mouth to roar.

Someone’s hand slammed down over it, and she struggled as strong arms hauled her backwards, dragging her off the bar. The male held her harder, wrestled with her and managed to restrain her arms, pinning them to her sides. She bit into his palm and he growled at her, a warning she wanted to heed but couldn’t manage to obey.

She needed to fight.

“Calm her the fuck down or you are both out of here, family or fucking not,” a male voice barked and she snarled at the owner of it—the jaguar. “Get this shit under control.”

“Come with me,” Sherry said and Maya struggled harder, needed to reach the female and fight her.
Needed to make this her territory.

Grey grunted and his grip on her tightened, and she flinched as pain arced like lightning through her bones. A show of strength. He was stronger than her, but she wouldn’t let him stop her. He could break her bones if he wanted. She would fight.

She kicked at him, battering his shins.

He bowed backwards, bringing her legs up and making it impossible for her to reach him.

Maya lashed out at everyone in her way instead.

All it did was help her brother by scattering everyone in his way, giving him an open route to take as he followed Sherry.

As she drew closer to the male with the fiery red hair, the need to fight grew stronger, drove her out of her mind and terrified her, leaving her feeling trapped inside her own body. She clawed at Grey’s arms, cutting through his coat and scoring his flesh, but all he did was hiss through his teeth. His grip on her remained too strong for her to break.

She needed to break it.

She needed to fight.

The scarlet-haired male’s silver eyes tracked her until she was level with him, and then casually he looked back down at his beer and resumed speaking with Cavanaugh.

Cold swept through her in response.

All of the fight flowed out of her and she slumped in Grey’s arms, reeling but unsure why.

Release Day Blitz: Eyes on You - Laura Kaye

From New York Times Bestselling author Laura Kaye, comes EYES ON YOU, a new novella in her Blasphemy Series, brought to you by 1,001 Dark Nights! Be sure to grab your copy today!

About EYES ON YOU (Blasphemy #3):

She wants to explore her true desires, and he wants to watch…

When a sexy stranger asks Wolf Henrikson to rescue her from a bad date, he never expected to want the woman for himself. But their playful conversation turns into a scorching one-night stand that reveals the shy beauty gets off on the idea of being seen, even if she’s a little scared of it, too. And Wolf loves to watch.

In the wake of discovering her fiancé’s infidelity, florist Olivia Foster never expected to find someone who not only understood her wildest, darkest fantasies, but would bring them to life. As Wolf introduces her to his world at the play club, Blasphemy, Liv finds herself tempted to explore submission and exhibitionism with the hard-bodied Dom even as she’s scared to trust again.

But Wolf is a master of getting what he wants—and he’s got his eyes set on her…

EXCERPT:

The silence that followed was thick with tension, and Liv almost couldn’t decide if she’d hallucinated what’d happened or if this first date was truly just that bad. Jerry wouldn’t make eye contact and, instead, peered down at his cell phone beneath the table. So she took the opportunity to survey the diners sitting at the horseshoe-shaped bar near them in the hopes she’d see someone, anyone, she knew. God, please give me a way to escape Mr. I Don’t Use Menus. But God had clearly forsaken her, because the party of three women having a girls’ night out were strangers. As were the various groupings of men, some of whom wore Orioles gear and watched the pre-game commentary on the captioned television screens above the bar. An elderly man she didn’t know sat alone nearest to their high-boy table nursing a glass of bourbon, and two seats down from him…sat the hottest man Liv had ever seen.

And that was her impression just from seeing him in profile.

He had dark blond hair and a chiseled jaw, and even sitting, it was clear that he was tall.

Seriously broad shoulders filled out a dark green button-down shirt, and big hands gripped a glass of water. Now God was just being mean. Because someone was going to get to be with that man tonight while she was stuck here with Jerry of the I Don’t Use Menus clan. As she watched, not-Jerry pressed his cell phone to his ear and began talking in tones too low for her to hear.

On a sigh, Liv returned her attention to Jerry. Not that it mattered, because his gaze remained fixed on his phone. She drained the rest of her Prosecco and wished someone would bring her the bottle. That wouldn’t be too awkward for a first date, right? Right?

Review: Bronze Gods - A.A. Aguirre

Across the water lay the land of Hy Breasil, inhabited by the immortal Ferishers. Though they were few, they were divided, and when the mortal conquerors came they did not stand together. They had magic but the invaders were many, and after a bitter war, peace was only made through marriage. And thus the ten great houses grew, and the city of Dorstaad rose, and the Ferisher bloodlines grew thin. But there were some who still wielded the ancient magic...

Janus Mikani and Celeste Ritsuko work all hours in the Criminal Investigation Division, keeping the citizens of Dorstaad safe. He’s a charming rogue with an uncanny sixth sense; she’s all logic—and the first female inspector. Between his instincts and her brains, they collar more criminals than any other partnership in the CID.

Then they’re assigned a potentially volatile case where one misstep could end their careers. At first, the search for the daughter of one of the great houses seems straightforward, but when the girl is found murdered—her body charred to cinders by an intricate and deadly device—Mikani and Ritsuko will be challenged as never before. A ruthless killer is stalking the gaslit streets, weaving blood and magic in a lethal ritual that could mean the end of everything they hold dear...

Review:
The Apparatus Infernum series is written by Ann Aguirre and her husband Andres under the pen name A.A. Aguirre. I'm a fan of Ann Aguirre's writing style and I love steampunk so of course I was drawn to this series and I'm so glad I found it. The authors have created an interesting world that is set in a different realm, one where originally ruled by the Ferishers (fae type immortals) but invaded by humans. The Ferishers were more powerful but the humans had numbers and technology on their side and now only a few main Ferisher families remain. The world has an industrial revolution feel to it but with the addition of magic and as the series centres around a pair of detectives it has a bit of a murder mystery thing going on too. It's a real mash up of genres that includes hints of a future romance and I'm very interested to see where it goes from here.

The main characters are CID Detectives Celeste Ritsuko and her partner Janus Mikani. Ritsuko is the first female detective employed by CID and therefore she has to work three times as hard as any of the men just to prove herself worthy of her position (sadly sexism is still a thing even in fictional worlds but that just makes it feel more realistic!), she is methodical and very, very motivated to prove she's the best so she's willing to put the legwork in to make sure she solves any cases that come her way. Mikani is obviously some ferisher blood somewhere in his family tree and it's given him the very useful ability to tell if people are lying to him, using his gift comes at a price but it makes him very handy to have around when they're interviewing suspects. Mikani is less organised than Ritsuko and tends to work by instinct rather than through logic but their very different styles really compliment each other and is what makes them one of CID's top teams of detectives.

After the disappearance of the daughter of one of the largest and most powerful Ferisher families Mikani and Ritsuko are handed their most important and high profile case yet. They need to find out what is going on fast, before public opinion can turn against them and they've got very little to go on. The deeper they dig the more mud they uncover and there is much more going on than either of them could have guessed at. I really enjoyed the mystery side to the story and was totally invested in the outcome of the story. I also loved both of the main characters and the strong friendship between them, there are definitely hints that their bond could become even deeper though so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a bit of romance in the next book too.

Review:
I first fell in love with Micha and Drystan way back in 2013 when Pantomime was first released so I went into Masquerade with mixed feelings from the excitement that we were FINALLY going to get a conclusion to their story to the sadness that the journey was nearing an end. I still don't feel quite ready to say goodbye to this world or these characters but I do think this was a fitting end to the series and it did answer all of the biggest questions that had been raised in previous books. Some things possibly tied up a little too easily but overall I was happy with the way it ended and I'm very glad I invested the time to read the series.

Micha has been such a wonderful character from the very beginning, all of his struggles to become the person he was born to be and to find people who will accept him for who he is have paid off and now he has created a wonderful family for himself with Drystan, Cyan, Maske and more. I loved that his brother Cyril has supported him through everything and it was nice that Cyril had a larger role to play in this story too. Drystan has always been a character full of secrets and I was a bit disappointed we didn't get to dig further into his past but he's also been on quite a difficult journey and this book sees him facing his biggest temptations yet. I was worried for a time that he would fall completely apart but it was nice to see Micha support him in his hour of need when the tables turned.

I don't want to go into much detail about the plot but this story focuses much more on the political unrest in Ellada, the Foresters have been growing in power since the beginning, people are becoming more and more paranoid and tensions in the general population are high. For Micha and the other chimera the stakes have never been higher but you'll have to read the book for yourself if you want to know more than that. This book had less of the magical performances of the previous one but probably more intrigue and investigation, more secrets and bigger betrayals. The pace felt a little slower but not in a way that stopped me enjoying it, in fact I probably appreciated the urgency more because of the way events unfolded.

Masquerade was a fitting end to the trilogy but I'm still kind of hoping Laura Lam will decide to revisit this world in the future. I'd be very happy to spend more time with these characters or even explore other parts of the world and perhaps see some of the minor characters have a chance to shine.

My Favourite Books from the First Half of 2017

It's always interesting to look back and try to pick my favourite books of the year but it can be really hard to narrow it down to a reasonable number so I thought I'd make a start on my top books of 2017 list early by having a look at my favourites from January to June. I limited it to first reads only (the books I reread are already favourites so would have an unfair advantage!) and no more than one book per author (again some authors would end up on the list multiple times!). The books can be old or new as long as they're new to me but as it happened this time around they're all 2017 releases and there are quite a few debuts on the list which is great.

My favourite YA books from the first half of 2017:
(Click the links to read my reviews)

  1. Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor
  2. Dawn Study by Maria V Snyder
  3. Royal Bastards by Andrew Shvarts
  4. Flame in the Mist by Renee Ahdieh
  5. Caraval by Stephanie Garber

I don't really read contemporary YA so it's no surprise that this list is full of fantasy titles. We are really getting spoiled with the huge amount of YA fantasy being released right now and there are so many more books that I'm really excited to read and already suspect will end up on my final list at the end of the year!

My favourite adult books from the first half of 2017:
(Click the links to read my reviews)

  1. White Hot by Ilona Andrews
  2. Silver Silence by Nalini Singh
  3. The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden
  4. Scorpion Trap by Pippa DaCosta
  5. Silence Fallen by Patricia Briggs

It doesn't surprise me that my favourite adult tiles are all branches of fantasy either, my favourite genres are still definitely urban fantasy and paranormal romance but fantasy in general always hits my hot spot! This list includes 4 of my favourite authors who are nearly always in my top book lists and Katherine Arden's debut has me incredibly excited to follow her writing career.

What are your favourite books of the year so far? Do any of mine make your lists too? If you have any fantasy recommendations (old or new) please do leave them in the comment, I can never have too many books on my to read mountain!

Review: Turned by a Tiger - Felicity Heaton

On the verge of bleeding out and hunted by his merciless torturers, Talon has no choice but to seek sanctuary at Underworld, a nightclub run by a jaguar shifter liable to kill him on sight for being a tiger shifter male. What he finds in the old warehouse isn’t the grim shadow of Death though but an angel of mercy, one who offers him salvation and revenge—one who happens to be his fated mate.

Tending bar at Underworld is never dull when you’re a mortal surrounded by immortals, but when a gorgeous tiger shifter covered in blood stumbles into the club, and set’s fire to her boss’s temper, Sherry’s entire world is in danger of being turned on its head. Something about the mysterious warrior has her stepping in to save him, something that ignites her heart and stirs her soul, and no matter how fiercely she fights it, she can’t hold herself back.

When Talon reveals the name of his captors, and his plan to head back in to save his friends, will Sherry be brave enough to embrace the feelings he stirs in her and step deeper into the world of immortals? Review:
I always know I'm in for a fun story when I pick up one of Felicity Heaton's books so I went into Turned by a Tiger with high expectations and she didn't let me down. Talon was captured by Archangel and has been being held prisoner for months while they performed experiments on him, he managed to escape but was badly wounded and now he's in desperate need of somewhere to recuperate before he goes back and tries to save his fellow prisoners. Stumbling into Underworld looking for safety he's shocked to discover his fated mate waiting there for him, even more so when he realises she is a normal human woman not a fellow shifter.

Sherry loves her job at Underworld and has learned to hold her own amongst its immortal clientele but there is something about Talon that calls out to her in a visceral way. When Kyter refuses to offer him sanctuary Sherry offers to let him stay with her until he has recovered but once she has him in her home she quickly realises that she doesn't want to let him leave. When Sherry and her friends realise what Archangel have been up to they agree to help Talon with his rescue mission but will Sherry be left with a broken heart at the end of it all or can she find happiness as human with an immortal shifter who will outlive her by centuries.

I have to admit I was a little put off by the massive case of insta-love between Talon and Sherry, I've got nothing against instant attraction but things go way beyond that between them within 24 hours and that's not my favourite trope. I was able to forgive that because I did really like both characters though, the banter between them was amusing and they had great chemistry but I also liked the way they worked together to help rescue his friends. Sherry had a role of her own to play in the rescue mission and Talon wouldn't have been able to do it without the help of her and several of the other characters we've come to love throughout this series. The rushed beginning of their relationship allowed us to dive right back into the action and we did get some slow and sweet scenes with them as a couple at the end that satisfied my need for a little romance.

It was great to catch up with some of the previous characters and I definitely enjoyed meeting Talon's family so I'm really pleased that his sister's story is up next (I'm really hoping his brother's will follow soon afterwards!). I'm definitely interested to see what Archangel is up to, it looks like things have taken a sinister turn within the organisation so there is definitely more to be revealed there. Each story in this series works as a standalone featuring a different couple but now that the plot is getting more interconnected I'd recommend reading the series in order to make the most out of it. It's a series that's going from strength to strength though and I'm looking forward to continuing it!

Sherry’s bottom hit the top of the low wine refrigerator as Kyter suddenly vaulted the black bar that ran almost the entire length of one wall of Underworld. She quickly set down the cloth she had been using to dry the last of the glasses and rushed forwards, running down the narrow walkway behind the bar and reaching the end just as Kyter hauled the stranger off his knees and onto his feet, and landed a hard right hook across his jaw.

The big guy growled through the thick black beard covering the lower half of his face and hit the wall close to her, slid down it and landed on his butt on the tacky floor.

“Kyter,” Sherry snapped, but her boss wasn’t listening.

His eyes glowed golden in the low light as he stalked towards the man, muscles tense beneath his white dress shirt, coiled in readiness.

She looked down at the newcomer.

The poor bastard wasn’t in any shape to fight, had shocked her when she had seen him dragging himself into the club. At first, she had figured him for a local homeless drunk, with his wild shaggy black hair that brushed his nape, ragged thick beard, and his lack of clothes, but the way her boss had reacted told her he was something else.

Another cat shifter.

Kyter often lost his shit when male shifters came into the club unannounced and uninvited.

Apparently it was a territory thing.

Sherry didn’t think this man was here to fight Kyter for his perceived territory though.
Blood covered his bare chest, outlining some of the hard compact muscles and concealing the rest. It drenched his left arm from the elbow down too, and had stuck his loose black cotton trousers to his left thigh.

The man lifted amber eyes to lock with Kyter’s golden ones and bared his fangs on a snarl.

Kyter didn’t back off.

He grabbed the man by his throat, pulled him up the wall and punched him again, bristling with aggression as he growled right in the man’s face and bared his own emerging fangs.

“Kyter!” She would keep shouting his damned name until she got through to him or her voice gave out.

“Kyter!”

He still refused to heed her and she flinched as he went to town on the poor bastard, hitting him with a low blow to his stomach that had fresh blood rolling down his hip and a pained growl leaving his lips. The man sagged but Kyter held him up, shoved harder against his throat.

Something inside Sherry snapped, and she lifted the section of bar in front of her, driven to intervene, but stopped dead when the injured man roared.

A wave of prickles rushed down her spine and the hairs on the back of her neck stood on end as her heart thundered in response to that feral and wild sound.

In a move she couldn’t track, he launched Kyter across the room, sending her boss slamming into the wall. Kyter hit the deck but was on his feet a heartbeat later, launching back at the newcomer.
What had him so damned intent on killing the bastard?

Was the man a jaguar too?

Normally when Kyter got pissy because another cat shifter had come into the club, he managed to hold himself together and keep his irritation to a series of low growls and death glares, and the odd kicking out.

There had been one time when he had really lost his shit though, had ended up in a brawl that had emptied the busy club.

That time, it had been a fellow jaguar that had rolled in.

The injured man caught Kyter as he tackled him and wrestled with him, his muscles bunching and bulging as he strained against Kyter and fought to subdue him. A low growl curled from his lips as he got the upper hand.

Kyter snarled right back and pushed harder, managed to twist his right arm free and smash his fist into the man’s face.

The man staggered towards Sherry, going down the whole time, and she flinched as his face smacked off the end of the bar and he ended up in a tangled heap on the floor, his left arm hooked through the legs of one of the bar stools.

Kyter was on him in the blink of an eye, pounding his chest and face with hard blows. The man roared and bucked up, closed his fist around the stool and swung it at Kyter’s head.

Her boss grunted as it impacted, fell to his left and rolled onto his feet. Blood trickled down from a gash above his right eyebrow, dripping into his eye and onto his cheek. He growled and swiped his hand across it, and was on the other man before she could even attempt to track his movements.

The man flew past her and crashed into the wall just ten foot from her, leaving a huge dent in the black plaster. He landed on his face and lay there, so still she was sure he was dead.

Kyter prowled towards him, clearly convinced that he wasn’t and determined to finish him off.

He had to be another jaguar.

The man twitched and then he was gone, leaped clear just as Kyter landed where he had been.
Her gaze zipped to the man and her blue eyes widened as beautiful amber fur striped with thick black bands rippled over his bare chest and down his arms.

Not a jaguar.

A tiger.

He growled, bearing huge canines.

Kyter twisted and leaped again, springing across the gap to land on the man’s chest. The man caught him and they went down hard in a tangle of limbs. She winced again as Kyter managed to get on top and landed a solid left hook that snapped the tiger’s head around and made his teeth clack together so hard she heard them.

The big tiger snarled and shook his head, and she had the terrible feeling that he was going to pass out.

Or die.

She couldn’t let him die.

That sensation went through her like a thunderclap, lighting her up inside with a weird sort of energy, a need that drove her to obey it.

Tiger rolled and got the upper hand on Kyter for all of a second.

Her boss pressed his feet into the man’s stomach and kicked, sending him sailing through the air again. She squeezed her eyes shut as he hit the bar, bending backwards over it, and barked out a pained whimper before collapsing on the floor and scattering several bar stools.
Kyter dragged a hand over his wild sandy hair and advanced.

Tiger didn’t move.

She had to do something.

Her boss was going to kill him if she kept standing back and let things continue.

That lightning arced through her again, that dangerous need that demanded she obey it.

She had to protect the tiger.

Aware that she might get hurt, that placing herself between two cat shifters was madness and beyond a risky move, she swiftly rounded the bar, because she was equally as aware she had to save the tiger.

That only she could save him.

Kyter snarled and swung at the male, his claws cutting through the air.

Sherry leaped between them, splaying her arms out at her sides to block his path to the tiger.

She flinched away, heart rocketing, blood pounding and dizziness setting in as she struggled not to pass out from the fear that blasted through her, fear that this was the end and defending the tiger had just got her killed instead of him.

The expected blow didn’t come.

She slowly cracked her eyes open and they widened as she saw Kyter’s extended claws in the corner of her field of vision.

Her boss stood just inches from her, breathing so hard she thought the buttons of his white shirt might pop off at any moment. His golden eyes glowed in the dim light from behind the bar, drilling into her with a question, a demand to know what had possessed her and made her leap between him and the tiger.

She wasn’t sure.

She just hadn’t been able to stand idle any longer, letting him fight when he was wounded, weak from his injuries. It wasn’t fair, and he hadn’t done anything to deserve such a brutal attack from her boss.

Sherry backed off a step, moving one closer to the tiger, but maintained her pose, blocking Kyter’s way to the man.

Kyter huffed and eased back a step too, and raked long fingers through his hair as he breathed hard, clearly fighting the urge to get at the tiger and take him down.

“Reining it in.” He held his hands up at his sides when she continued to watch him, and even went as far as moving back another two steps.

He muttered something under his breath and began pacing. She had seen Kyter do that enough times to know to give him space. He had a habit of working off energy by pacing.

It was a cat thing.

She had seen their resident snow leopard shifter, Cavanaugh, use the same trick when his mate had wound him up or someone had dared to look at her.

Sherry looked over her shoulder at the tiger where he knelt behind her, doubled over and clutching his stomach, his black head bent so she couldn’t see his face.

She had the feeling he hadn’t wandered here by mistake, and hadn’t come looking for a fight.

She had a feeling that he was looking for salvation.

Protection.

He lifted his head and she sucked in a breath as bright amber eyes met hers and heat curled through her, a fire that only grew in intensity as a low growl curled from his bloodstained lips.

The club whooshed past her and she gasped as she flew backwards. She stumbled and grunted as the hand suddenly clamped around her right wrist hauled her upwards again, jerking her forwards and slamming her into a broad masculine back.

Kyter.

He held her behind him, shielding her with his body.

Why?

She hadn’t been in danger.

Not physical danger anyway.

She was no cat shifter but she had the undeniable sensation that growl hadn’t been a show of aggression.

It had been a show of possession.

A sign that even in his weakened state, knocking on Death’s door, this mysterious tiger shifter wanted her.
