The king’s hands threaded under her arms and, with little effort, pulled her to her feet. And then he pressed his mouth to Shayla’s.

Her mind erupted into a cacophony of joyous confusion. She’d been specifically told there would be no kissing. The king did not kiss.

But, holy hell! Did the king ever kiss.

His large frame bent down over her, surrounding her in his heat. His full lips sucked and pulled at hers and his tongue demanded entrance and exploration, which she freely granted. His hard muscles bunched and thrummed around her, setting her body on fire everywhere they touched. The scent of powerful masculinity filled her nose, and the exquisite flavor of his tongue in her mouth intoxicated her. And, oh God, every time she felt the passing hardness of his fangs as they kissed made her whimper and moan. Her body readied itself immediately for his, moistening, opening.

Having shielded herself from physical relationships, she was astounded to learn her body had the ability to produce this crazy, urgent euphoria. Her brain scrambled to process each new, maddening sensation. In that moment, she would’ve done anything to maintain the feeling.

Was it always like this?

Kael growled low in his chest as his mouth came at her again and again, and Shayla felt the vibration of the feral sound against her breasts. She squeezed her thighs together, seeking friction to satisfy even a little of her now uncontrollable lust. Her mouth was so filled with his probing tongue it was difficult to get enough oxygen, but his kisses convinced her she could live without it as long as he continued to devour her so intensely.

Never had she imagined the expression of physical love could make her feel so wanted, so needed.

His obvious pleasure throbbed against her stomach and flooded her with unbelievable feelings of power, and just a little fear. Because they were off the grid now, outside the bounds of the rules and expectations she’d been taught during her training. And she was thrilled it might mean he was as affected by her as she was by him. Wherever the king was leading them, she was only too happy to follow. In truth, she felt powerless to do otherwise.

A sharp, piercing sensation nicked the edge of her tongue. Kael groaned and she gasped into his mouth. He bit me! They said he wouldn’t

All thinking abruptly halted as he sucked on her tongue and fed. She could feel the pulling flow of her blood. It was an electric rush that set her body on fire.

As if she didn’t already burn for him. As if she wasn’t already wet for him.

From just their first kiss…

Nikolai couldn’t let himself be seduced by an impossible idea—the idea that Katherine could be his. He sprung to his feet and made for the door of the prison cell, still open from his earlier rushed entry. “I have to go.”

“Why?” She followed after him, the alluring beat of her heart and intoxicating femininity revealing her nearness.

He couldn’t stop, couldn’t reply, couldn’t look at her. If he did, there’d be no going back. He grasped the iron door.

Small hands fisted in the back of his shirt. “Wait. Why are you leaving? I mean, did I—”

He halted, heart slamming against his sternum, fangs stretched out and aching. “Release me,” he rasped.

She heaved a shaky breath he felt against his arm. “I…can’t.”

“Release. Me,” he said louder. Competing emotions warred within him until he thought he might split apart.

“Nikolai—”

It was his name rolling off her tongue that did it.

He whirled and buried his hands in her hair. He pulled her to him, causing them both to stumble, and then he turned her and backed her into the ancient bars of the door. It clicked shut, sealing them in the cell and cutting off the last of his restraint.

Tilting her head back, Nikolai devoured her mouth. His lips sucked, his tongue explored, his fangs rubbed against her moist flesh. Oh, God, she was so sweet and warm and wet. He stepped into her, forcing their bodies together from chest to thighs. And, goddammit, she was soft everywhere he was hard.

Her hands curled around his neck and climbed into his hair, fingers tangling and tugging. She pulled him in tighter and surrendered to the kiss. She met him stroke for stroke, their tongues curling and twining together. Her tongue stroking at his fangs until he was sure he would lose his fucking mind.

Until Nikolai no longer knew who was surrendering to whom.

If Kaira didn’t stop looking at him like that, looking at his fangs like she was fascinated and hungry, Henrik wouldn’t be responsible for his actions. She blinked and licked her lips. Which didn’t help his restraint one damn bit. He braced his hands on each of the rails of her hospital bed, a predator stalking her, boxing her in.

“You need to understand how weak my restraint is, kjære.” Dear. The term of endearment was out of his mouth before he’d thought to say it.

Slowly, tentatively, she cupped his cheek in her hand, and her touch was like an anchor. Holding him. Steadying him. “So, you need blood to survive?” Her thumb stroked across the skin under his eye.

Warm. Soft. Captivating.

“And because of your illness, my blood might has been the only blood that actually…worked for you?” She said this softly, like she was trying to work out the problem by talking about it out loud. Still, he nodded.

The questions unleashed a rising tide of hope. Was she finding her way to being all right with this?

Kaira’s gaze dragged from his eyes to her own thumb moving over his flesh, and then she looked lower. She shifted her hand until she cupped his jaw. Her thumb caressed the corner of his lips once, twice.

Henrik’s heart tripped into a sprint. “Kaira.”

The next slide of her thumb brushed the surface of his fang.

He sucked in a breath and every muscle went rigid. Kaira quickly withdrew her hand, but he shook his head. “Touch me. I want you to.”

A little shakiness traveled through her touch when her hand returned to his face again. His hands fisted around the rails of her hospital bed, attempting to hold himself in place for whatever exploration she wished to conduct. She began again with his cheek, his jaw, his lip. And then she touched his elongated canine, less tentatively this time, a purposeful drag of her skin against the most visible outward manifestation of what he was.

The sensation lit up his entire central nervous system.

Adrenaline and arousal poured off her, and her heartbeat fluttered like a hummingbird’s wings. Her lips fell open. She swiped her thumb under the point of his fang.

He wasn’t sure who gasped louder.

Henrik could already taste her. Given how razor-sharp his teeth were, he already knew.

She examined her thumb. A thin ribbon of red bloomed on the pad. Her eyes went wide.

His cock went rock fucking hard.

The bedrails under his fists creaked and groaned. He couldn’t look away from her intrigued expression, from her breasts heaving under the thin hospital gown, from the smear of her life’s blood turning the air so fragrant he could barely maintain rational thought.

“If I…let go…I’m going to be…all over you,” he growled. “Get rid of it.”
