Review: Banshee Charmer - Tiffany Allee

When she's sent to a crime scene and finds her second dead woman in as many weeks, half-banshee detective Kiera "Mac" McLoughlin is convinced a serial killer is on the loose. Incubi are extinct, her boss insists. But what else can kill a woman in the throes of pleasure? When her partner is murdered after using witchcraft to locate the killer and Mac is thrown off the case, her frustration turns to desperation.

Certain the killer is an incubus, Mac works behind her department's back to chase down slim, sometimes perilous leads. While the killer eludes her, she does discover handsome Aidan Byrne, an investigative counterpart from the enigmatic Otherworlder Enforcement Agency. Mac typically runs her investigations fast and hard, but with Aidan at her side, she's running this one "hot" as well. But Aidan knows more than he's letting on-something that could shatter their blazing romance and add Mac to the killer's growing body count...

Review:
Mac is a detective who works for the Paranormal Division of the Chicago Police Department - otherwise known as the freak squad - and is currently investigating a series of brutal murders that appear to have been committed by an extinct supernatural species. When her partner is killed on the job it makes Mac even more determined to track down the murderer but her boss has taken her off the case believing it has become too personal. Luckily Aidan, an agent for the Otherworlder Enforcement Agency (the equivalent of the paranormal FBI) who is also working on the case asks for her help tracking down the killer. Mac is drawn to Aidan but it appears that he is keeping secrets from her, is he really who he says he is and should she trust him?

Banshee Charmer was a great start to a new series and has left me keen for the next installment. The story is fast paced, has a strong plot and introduces us to some great characters. Mac is a half banshee which immediately makes her stand out as I don't think I've come across a banshee in an adult series before.  We don't actually learn much about her abilities in this first story but I'm hoping we find out more as the series continues. I loved the chemistry between her and Aidan, that definitely made the book for me and I'm looking forward to seeing more of them together in future books. It is obvious from early on that he is hiding something but even though I wasn't sure if he could be trusted I could easily understand Mac's attraction to him.

For a novella Tiffany Allee manages to pack quite a lot into the story, the world building is interesting without being overwhelming and I liked the fact that there are so many different supernatural species in the story. Banshee Charmer has it all - mystery, action and sizzling romance - and I can't wait to see what the author comes up with next. If you're looking for a fun and light hearted read you can't go wrong with this one.
