Cover Comparison: Clipped Wings Series - Helena Hunting

To celebrate the release of Cupcakes and Ink, the novella that kicks off Helena Hunting's new Clipped Wings series, I thought it would be fun to have a look at the UK and US covers for the series. I've already read the novella so will be posting my review very soon but I can't wait to carry on reading this series! The books are published by Gallery in the US and Orion in the UK and as you can see below they've taken a very different approach to the covers:

Cupcakes and Ink
(UK & US release 6th Feb 2014)

UK Cover / US Cover

Blurb:
When a tragic accident devastates Tenley Page's life, she flees her hometown in search of somewhere she can start afresh. In Chicago she finds work, college, friends, and she tentatively begins to piece her life back together.

Then she meets Hayden Stryker. A devilishly handsome tattoo artist with a dark past of his own.

From their fleeting interactions, Hayden's intrigue with Tenley grows into fascinated. But as they get closer, Tenley must balance her feelings from him with the guilt she carries from the life she left behind.

Tenley and Hayden's story continues in the hugely popular CLIPPED WINGS.

Clipped Wings
(UK & US release date 13th March 2014)

UK Cover / US Cover

Blurb:
Hayden Stryker is a devastatingly handsome tattoo artist. Covered in ink and steel, his artwork acts as armour while he attempts to move on from a world-shattering loss.

Twenty-one-year-old Tenley Page is new to town and battling demons of her own. The chemistry between the two is instant and unlike anything they've ever experienced before.

When Hayden agrees to apply his art to Tenley's skin, the pair embark on an emotional and intense relationship that neither could have anticipated. But as Tenley's past threatens to destroy their fragile romance, Hayden must find a balance between his desire to protect her and his need to claim her as his.

Inked Armour
(UK release date 8th May 2014 / US release date 13th May 2014)

UK Cover / US Cover

Tenley has gone.

And in the wake of her leaving, Hayden's carefully ordered world threatens to spiral out of control. Balanced on the brink of self-destruction, he realises he needs to face the truth about his past if he has any hope of a future.

Back in her hometown, Tenley lays her ghosts to rest. And despite her grief, her feelings for Hayden remain as intense and all-consuming as ever.

Desperate to repair the damage she has done to their relationship, she returns to Chicago and the man she loves. But there are still so many obstacles in their path. Will their love conquer all? Or will it tear them apart?

So what do you think of the covers? Do you have a preference over the UK or US versions? It's a difficult choice for me, but I while I prefer the UK cover for Cupcakes and Ink I think I prefer the US covers for Clipped Wings and Inked Armour. I actually really like both the models they've used for the UK covers (they guy they've picked for Hayden is hot LOL) but I really like the arty feel to the US covers. I don't think the US cover for Cupcakes and Ink matches the others very well though but I guess that doesn't matter too much since it's only available as an ebook so won't be sitting on the shelves with the others!

Did you already have this series on your radar? If you've read Cupcakes and Ink already I'd love to know what you thought of it! Are the books on your wishlist? If so which of the covers would you like to see sat on your bookshelves?

  1. Great post, I prefer the U, for the novella, I love the US versions for Clipped wings and Inked Armour, but I think my favourite is UK for Inked armour.
I have read the novella, and have Clipped Wings waiting to be read, but I already know the basic of the story as I read it in its fan fiction form, so I am looking forward to seeing what changes have been made.

    1. I agree with you on your cover choices, I do like the UK covers but the US ones (apart from for the novella) stand out to me more because they're a little different to the normal NA covers we keep seeing.

I had no idea that this story started out as fan fiction! I'm not actually sure how I feel about that - I'm not happy that so many people are now publishing fan fiction, it's become the in thing to do but I really don't agree with it on principle! The whole point of fan fiction is that it's a homage to someone else's characters and is available for free. If you want to publish then you should write something that is completely your own. I really enjoyed Cupcakes and Ink though & I have the next 2 books from Netgalley so I'm sure I'll end up reading them LOL

  2. I like the the UK cover for cupcakes but the other two i kinda like the us version. The male model on armor doesn't really fit what I have in my head for Hayden and its a bit disappointing and i like the fiery wings for wings it fits.

    1. It seems like most of us are in agreement when it comes to the covers Amanda! I actually like the model they've chosen for Hayden on the UK cover but I've still only read the novella so hadn't had much time to build up a picture of him in my head LOL. I still prefer the US covers for the novels though, I love the artistic feel to them :o)

  3. Great post, Sarah! I prefer the UK cover for the novella, but I really like what the US did for the covers of the actual books. I love the kind of painted look of the wings and the titles. So pretty!
