Review:
I've been the biggest fan of the Beyond series since the very first book and I'm always desperate to get my hands on the latest instalment. I don't think I've actually read a book about a permanent foursome before but since the Ace, Cruz and Rachel triad is my favourite relationship in the series I had every confidence that Kit Rocha would convince me that Mad, Dylan, Jade and Scarlet would work together as a group. Unfortunately even though I liked all of the characters as individuals and definitely felt the chemistry between certain pairings I'm still not convinced that they fit well as a whole group and that left me feeling a little disappointed with Beyond Ruin.
I'm having a really difficult time pinpointing exactly why this didn't work for me as much as the books in this series usually do. There is no doubt that the sex is hot, in fact I think it might be some of the hottest that these authors have written yet but in my opinion there was definitely something missing. I could feel the connection between Mad and Dylan, Mad and Scarlet and between Dylan and Jade but wasn't invested in the relationship between Scarlet and Jade which is odd since they were the ones who were already in a relationship before the book started. I also spent a lot of time feeling like Jade was always on the outside looking in, for much of the book it didn't feel like she was as connected to the rest of the group and I felt quite sorry for her because she so desperately wanted to be loved for who she was but everyone was constantly underestimating her.
Although I didn't fall in love with these characters quite as much as I expected to I still really enjoyed finding out more about Mad's past and life in Sector 1. I also loved seeing how much Jade has done to help the women from Sector 2 since she was able to escape, she never forgot the people who were left behind and has dedicated herself to doing what she can to protect those left behind. In fact, Jade has become quite a powerhouse and I have very high hopes for her plans for the future. Where Beyond Ruin fell down in relationship development it really ramped up the stakes in the outside world, things are changing in all of the Sectors and we're now reaching a critical point where things with Eden are about to come to a head. Nothing is ever going to be the same again after certain events and I can't wait to see how this plays out.
So, Beyond Ruin isn't my favourite book in the series (and I'm in the minority for not loving this book so don't let me put you off reading it!) but this is still one of my absolute favourite series and I'm just as eager to get my hands on the next instalment as I always have been. I'm a fully paid up O'Kane for life and can't wait to go back to Sector 4!

I do have to agree with you that this isn't my favorite "couple". Is that the right word here? I'm not sure. I did enjoy each of the four individually. I like learning more about their pasts, though we really didn't learn anything about Scarlett. I also enjoyed the overall story ARC. I still gave this book a high rating, but I think it is because I'm more invested in the overall story arc and all the characters, than the romance itself. My favorite couple would be the Cruz/Ace/Rachel or Jas/Noelle. It is hard for me to pick between those two groups. Though with Jas and Noelle, you also get Dallas and Lex, which is a bonus. LOL. Great review.
ReplyDeleteThanks Mel, I do still adore this series & my rating for this was a 3 which meansi liked it :-) my favourite relationship is definitely the Ace/Cruz/Rachel triad, they are fantastic together & I loved the developments in this book! But I pretty much love all of the different couples we've met and I'm very excited to see where things go for the whole O'Kane clan from here onwards. The spin off series is going to be awesome too!
