Review: Copper King - Vivian Arend

Review:
Copper King is the first novella in the new Takhini Shifters series by Vivian Arend, it's currently only available in the Alpha's After Dark anthology but will be available to buy separately on the 1st of May. These stories will all be set in the same world as Vivian Arend's Granite Lake and Takhini Wolves series and there may be a slight crossover of characters across all of the series but the stories are all designed to stand alone so you can pick this up even if you're new to the world. Copper King fits into the time line just before the first Takhini Wolves book, Black Gold, the two main characters did make an appearance in Diamond Dust where they are an established couple but this is the story of how they first met so really is a great introduction to them both.

Lillie is looking for some fun in her last few days of freedom before she settles into the life her family has chosen for her. She doesn't have long and Vegas isn't her ideal destination since she is scared of crowds but it was the best option available to her and she's going to make the most of it by having a final fling - if she can find the right man that is. Jim is in Vegas with his friend Damon for their annual contest to decide who gets to keep the lucky coin they bought together as teenagers. It's been a while since Jim won and so this year he's more determined than ever and he's not going to let anyone distract him from the contest. Not even the beautiful bear shifter who has captured his attention more than any other woman in years. He might find Lillie's scent irresistible but he has more important things to deal with - unless Damon gets his way and manages to play matchmaker that is.

I've been a fan of Vivian Arend's shifter stories ever since I first discovered the Granite Lake Wolves books back in 2010 so of course I couldn't wait to start reading Copper King. She is brilliant at writing sweet romances that are full of humour and wonderful chemistry and I wasn't disappointed with her latest novella. It made a really nice change to read about a different kind of shapeshifter, I read so many books about werewolves or big cat shifters but I don't think I've read one about bears before. Don't get me wrong I love my wolves and jaguars but I had fun learning about the bears and how their instincts differ to those of the other shifters.

Jim and Lillie are both great characters and they were really well suited to each other. Lillie is quite shy and very nervous around lots of people which brings out all of Jim's protective instincts. More than anything they have fab chemistry though and I enjoyed seeing them get to know each other. The twist about how Lillie ended up in Vegas in the first place was very amusing and I enjoyed the case of mistaken identities that followed. Don't worry if you're new to Vivian Arend's world because you can easily pick up Copper King even if you've not read any of her previous stories. However, if you like this one then I'd highly recommend the rest of the Granite Lake and Tahkini Wolves series because they all have the same humour and some fantastic characters that I'm sure you'll love as much as I do.

Review:
Ryan is in Nepal as part of his gap year, working for a medical charity and helping to deliver supplies to small Nepalese communities. When he is asked to investigate the disappearance of a young Sherpa boy Ryan finds himself unable to resist the mystery but what he uncovers is a web of lies and deceit like nothing he could ever have imagined.

Matt Dickinson is brilliant at writing adventure stories that will have you gripped from the first page. I loved Mortal Chaos so jumped at the chance of reading the first book in his new trilogy and The Everest Files is a fantastic start to that series. I have never had any ambitions of climbing Everest (I'm much more of an armchair adventurer!) but I loved going on this journey with Ryan and getting to know more about Shreeya and her missing friend Kami. You can tell that the author has personal experience of climbing Everest, he paints a vivid picture of Nepal and you'll feel like you're climbing the mountain alongside Kami.

Kami is so proud when he is chosen as one of the Sherpas to help carry equipment for the the expedition of a wealthy American politician. The money he makes from just one trip will be enough to allow him to start a life with his childhood sweetheart Shreeya but it means so much more to him than that. He always dreamed of one day reaching the summit of Everest and this is his chance to do that. He had absolutely no idea quite how dangerous the journey would be though. I don't know a great deal about climbing so I was a little nervous that I might get confused by the details of the different equipment used and how it all worked but I needn't have worried because the author manages to bring it to life in a way that is very easy to understand. I actually enjoyed learning more about the process of climbing a mountain but I was most interested in the emotional effects the journey had on Kami and the rest of the team and that was what really held my interest in the story.

I don't want to say too much more because I would hate to accidentally give a spoiler so I'll just say that I was very surprised by the direction things took. I was completely invested in Kami's story and along with Shreeya I was desperate to know what had happened to him. I'll confess that I wasn't so interested in what was happening to Ryan, particularly at the beginning of the book, but once he'd started investigating Kami's disappearance I was totally hooked. This is the first book in a trilogy so it will be interesting to see what happens to Ryan next, I believe that we have reached the end of Kami and Shreeya's journey but Ryan seems determined to have his own adventure and I'll definitely be picking up the next book to see where that takes him.

Review:
Colton, Melanie and Hawk have been best friends for years, the three of them have always been inseparable but no matter how close they all are there has always been a special bond between Colt and Melanie. Melanie has always been able to turn to Colt and Hawk with any problem in the past but for the first time ever she is facing something that they can't help her with. She is desperate for a family but health issues mean her chance of conceiving is very slim and the odds are reducing with every passing month. Realising how desperate Melanie is to be a mother makes Colton look at her in a new light, he's always admired his spunky best friend but he'd tried not to notice the beautiful woman she grew into. Now he's realised just how perfect she is the thought of her starting a life with another guy leaves him cold, but can he convince his best friend that they can be together without risking the friendship that means so much to them both?

I have been a huge fan of Rebecca Zanetti's Maverick Montana series ever since I picked up Against the Wall last year so I couldn't wait to get my hands on this latest instalment. This series is full of super hot cowboy heroes and Colton is no exception to that - the chemistry between him and Melanie was off the charts and I think he's my new favourite hottie in the series. I love the small town feel of these books, although each story works as a stand alone we have come to know the whole family throughout the series and it was great to catch up with all the other characters we've grown to love. The whole town is invested in Colt and Melanie's relationship, they all saw it coming long before our main couple did and they've been betting on the outcome for months which was highly amusing.

Colton is a really sweet guy, he is always there for anyone who needs a helping hand and he loves his family unconditionally. He's the type of man who would do anything for anyone and I really love that about him. He never really wanted to settle down before, not that he's particularly a womaniser, he just planned on getting to a point in his career where he felt more settled before finding a woman to marry. Love doesn't take that into account though and once he starts to realise his feelings for Melanie it doesn't take him too long to change his mind completely about what his goals are. Melanie and Colt have a wonderful bond between them, I love the friends to lovers trope and Rising Assets was a great example of that. These characters know each other inside out and obviously have a great bond to build the rest of their relationship on. They also have wonderful chemistry but I'm sure that won't surprise you if you've read any of the earlier books in this series - they've all been incredibly steamy!

I have loved all of the books in this series so far but I can't tell you how excited I am that the next book will finally be Hawk's story. He has fascinated me since the very first book and there were some very interesting developments with his character in this one that have just made me even more eager to get my hands on it. Dawn is one lucky, lucky lady although I have to admit that I kind of feel sorry for Hawk who will have to face off against all three of her protective older brothers! The good thing is that he's already part of the family and loved by everyone so hopefully it won't be too hard to convince them he's serious about her. This is definitely a series that I love and one that I can't wait to continue - if you haven't come across it yet then I'd recommend reading the books in order but they're all perfect for when you're looking for a sexy, small town romance with a hot cowboy hero!

Crafting Corner Review: Twirled Paper - Jacqueline Lee

Crafting Corner is a new feature that I'm hosting that will appear on the blog on the first Saturday of the month and I hope that some of you will join in with me. Crafting Corner is somewhere for us to chat about anything craft related - it can be sewing, painting, drawing, model making, in fact pretty much anything goes. You may want to review crafting books or just talk about any current projects you're working on or things that you'd like to start. I don't really have a set format for these posts so I'm just going to roll with it and see what happens but hopefully some of you will find it interesting and be willing to share what you're working on too. It doesn't matter what day of the month you join in but if you do take part please come leave a link to your post in the comments so that I can check out what you've been creating!

March was a very slow month for me craft wise, I've been suffering with really bad headaches and then spent the last few days of the month in bed with the flu so I haven't felt like concentrating enough to carry on with my current cross stitch. I'm not sure why but cross stitch always feels more like a winter project so now spring has arrived I probably won't work on it so quickly throughout the next few months. I did dig out an old crafting book I have though and had a go at paper quilling so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to review that book!

Review:
Twirled Paper is a fabulous book for anyone who is interested in learning paper quilling. It comes with everything you need to get started - paper, a quilling tool, glue and even googly eyes to add to your creations! It also has instructions on all the types of coils you can make and lots of tips on how to make different shapes with them.

There are detailed instructions on creating all different kinds of insects, fish, farm animals, pets, birds and even aliens. Once you get started it is easy to let your imagination roam free and use the images inside as inspiration to create your own pictures. Quilling is fiddly to get the hang of but this book starts with such simple instructions that it doesn't take too long to get to grips with it and then you can move on to some of the more complicated designs included.

If you've ever wanted to have a go at making your own cards then I'd highly recommend this book, it has enough paper to complete a few different projects and you can easily buy more from any craft shop. This book is a great resource for beginners and people who have been quilling for a while. I've had it for years now and it's the kind of book I dip into every couple of years when I'm in the mood to do something creative.

I'm a huge fan of Vivian Arend and I LOVE her Granite Lake and Takhini Wolves series so when I found out she was starting a spin off series with set in the same world but staring other types of shifters it went immediately to the top of my wish list! Copper King is the first story in this new series and features two bear shifters Jim and Lillie.

The fact he’d thought to warn her only made it that much more unbearable to wait. They stood in the middle of the room, his hands rising to cup her face. Slowly he leaned in, tilting her head so when he touched their mouths together they were perfectly lined up.

For the first moment, his touch stayed soft and sweet, as if he was cautious of not frightening her other side. She returned his kiss, licking into his mouth with her tongue for a second of torturous delight.

He waited, letting her explore before he took over, nibbling and tasting as if she were precious and fragile. Things rapidly heated up, and he kissed her far more hungrily. His mouth slid over hers in a sensual attack she had no way of escaping, and no desire to either.
